TITANS ADD DORSEY, UMENYIORA, GAMBLE

After adding Miles Austin, Jared Cook, and Harvey Dahl on offense, the Tennessee Titans continued to spend, signing defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey to a five-year, $15 million deal, defensive end Osi Umenyiora to a four-year, $16 million deal, and cornerback Chris Gamble to a four-year, $20 million deal. The Titans are reportedly close to low-cost deals with quarterback Matt Moore, fullback Greg Jones, and offensive tackle Eben Britton as well.

BUCS BOLSTER SECONDARY WITH COX, MCCAIN, BARBER

The Buccaneers previously signed Michael Bennett, and today they announced the signings of three top defensive backs: Derek Cox, Brice McCain, and Ronde Barber. Cox was heavily pursued, ultimately signing a four-year, $28 million deal, while McCain earned a five-year, $27 million deal. Barber is back on a one-year deal worth $3 million.

WELKER, VOLLMER BACK IN NEW ENGLAND

The New England Patriots moved quickly to re-sign wide receiver Wes Welker and right tackle Sebastian Vollmer this offseason, eventually signing both players to multi-year deals. Welker ultimately settled for a two-year, $14 million deal with the club, while Vollmer ended up signing for $20 million over four years. Surprisingly, neither player received any additional offers on the open market.

BROWNS INVEST $75 MILLION ON DEFENSE

Cleveland fans can no longer accuse the Browns of financial austerity, as the club has invested another $75 million in their team this offseason, bringing their total to $190 million worth of contracts. The most recent additions to the club are cornerback Brent Grimes (5/$40), safety George Wilson (3/$15), defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis (3/$10), and linebacker Rey Maualuga (4/$10.) Cleveland is reportedly close a three-year, $10 million deal with kicker Phil Dawson, which would bring them to $200 million in offseason contracts.

Miami's salary cap space has been exhausted following their agreement with safety William Moore on a five-year, $40 million contract. They have also announced the signing of offensive guard Nate Garner to a two-year, $4 million deal, leaving them with $1.3 million in available cap room.

PATRIOTS REEL IN WOODSON ON ONE-YEAR DEAL

Not long after re-signing Wes Welker and Sebastian Vollmer, the New England Patriots have signed defensive back Charles Woodson to a one-year, $3.2 million contract. Woodson is expected to provide leadership and aggressiveness to New England's young defense; his arrival could allow Devin McCourty to shift back to cornerback as Aqib Talib's replacement, or provide an upgrade over Steve Gregory opposite McCourty.

COLTS SIGN MOORE, JACKSON, QUIN

Indianapolis continues to spend. After signing Paul Kruger and Aqib Talib earlier in the process, they have agreed to terms with offensive guard Brandon Moore (3/$13.5), defensive end Tyson Jackson (5/$27.5), and safety Glover Quin (5/$32.5.) They also signed defensive end Fili Moala to a four-year, $6 million deal, leaving them with $1.1 million in available cap room.

BEARS BRING BACK MELTON, ADD CHERILUS, BLACKBURN

Chicago has exhausted their cap room after signing three major free agents. The Bears agreed to a four-year, $20 million deal with right tackle Gosder Cherilus, a five-year, $30 million deal with defensive tackle Henry Melton, and a three-year, $15 million deal with linebacker Chase Blackburn. At this point, it's highly unlikely that the Bears will be able to re-sign free agent Brian Urlacher, who is reportedly considering retirement.

KOLB BACK IN ARIZONA

With limited financial reserves, the Arizona Cardinals couldn't afford to spend heavily in free agency, but they have reached agreements with four of their free agents, including quarterback Kevin Kolb, who signed a one-year, $2 million deal to compete for a starting job. They also re-signed quarterback Brian Hoyer, linebacker Quentin Groves, and safety Rashad Johnson to two-year, $2 million deals.

Devery Henderson has agreed to a four-year, $16 million contract with the 49ers, who previously released wide receiver Mario Manningham. Henderson will be expected to provide a deep threat for Colin Kaepernick, who displayed fantastic touch on his deep ball last season.

JAGUARS SIGN AMENDOLA

The Jaguars have concluded their first-day signings by announcing contracts with wide receiver Danny Amendola (a three-year, $18 million deal) and cornerback E.J. Biggers (four years, $10.8 million.) The signings are complimented by Jacksonville's earlier deals with defensive linemen Cliff Avril and Jason Jones.

Skins Revamping Secondary. Release Another Corner.

The Washington Redskins today announced the signing of free agent cornerback Keenan Lewis along with the release of cornerback Josh Wilson. The front office felt strongly that last years secondary greatly underperformed and are dedicated to building an improved group of defensive backs for the future. In 2012, Lewis lead the AFC in passes defensed. He finished fourth in yards allowed per target and seventh in touchdowns allowed. Even more, he never gave up 100 yards in a game to opposing receivers whom he covered. Against the run, he ranked third in the AFC in run stop percentage and didn’t miss a single tackle on opposition running plays. "We watched a lot of tape on Lewis and felt strongly that he was the reliable, strong, consistent corner that we needed going into this offseason. He was our #1 target and we are happy to have him to lead our secondary for years to come." Quoted Coach Shanahan.

It is expected that the Redskins will continue to focus on adding leadership and young talent to the secondary as the offseason continues.

BILLS RETAIN LEVITRE

On the first day of free agency, the Buffalo Bills have retained LG Andy Levitre on a new 5 year 36 million dollar contract, the club reports. Levitre was expected to be a hot commodity and from reports he definitely was on the open market. Levitre had this to say when it came to signing the new deal. "I know that we haven't had a lot of success around here but I really believe that Gonzo and the ownership of the Buffalo Bills are committed to keeping their own and to producing winning talent on the team."

Levitre's contract will put him in the upper echelon of pay for guards in the NFL and GM Gonzo stated " We told you all that Andy was going to be a priority and that he would get a fair contract for what we think he is worth to this team. He is one of the best guards in the national football league and he is a durable player that can always be counted on. We look forward to the next 5 years of having Andy manning out left Guard spot."

The Buffalo Jets? Bills add 3 former Jets, resign CB Leodis McKelvin and Guard Chad Rhinhart

When Mike Pettine was added to the Bills as the Defensive coordinator, one would expect a couple of his former players to make the short trip west to Buffalo. That prophecy was fulfilled today as the Bills came to terms with S Laron Landry, LB Calvin Pace, and DT Mike DeVito on new contracts Sunday.

Landry revitalized his career under Jets HC Rex Ryan and DC Mike Pettine last year. Landry has decided to follow his defensive coordinator agreeing to a 3 year 15 million dollar contract with the Bills. Landry is expected to add a little muscle to the Buffalo Bills secondary that has been lacking for years.

Calvin Pace was not on the market long as well because the Bills had a gaping hole at the OLB spot in their new hybrid 4-3 3-4 look. Pace is not guaranteed to start, but will receive plenty of playing time in the new Bills system. Whether a starter or not, Pace will at the very least provide a coach on the field, and a player who will provide quality depth.

DeVito has been an unheralded player for the Jets. He is a solid rotational player who will provide the Bills quality depth along their defensive front in both the 4-3 and 3-4 defense. DeVito is known as a run stuffer which seems to be a common theme this offseason. Landry, Pace, and DeVito are all known for their run stuffing ability.

In additional news, the Bills have resigned CB Leodis McKelvin to a new 3 year deal today. McKelvin has had an up and down career at CB but is the top punt returner in the NFL and will get a chance to compete for the starting LCB job in Buffalo. Also re-signed was Guard Chad Rhinhart who agreed to a new 1 year 1 million dollar deal to provide quality depth once again behind the newly re-signed Andy Levitre and Guard Kraig Urbik.

Lastly, the Bills bolstered their WR corps by adding the reliable David Nelson with his 1.3 million dollar tender signed, and also added WR Kevin Walter to a 3 year deal to compete for one of the slot WR spots

Patriots cut Kafka, Ebert, Holmes

New England made three roster moves today, releasing reserves Mike Kafka (QB), Jeremy Ebert (WR), and Andre Holmes (WR.) All three players are considered candidates for the practice squad, but they are expected to explore other opportunities as well. The moves save $1.5 million in cap room for the Patriots.

Panthers Pounce on Patriots' Seconday, Resign Edwards, Cut Gross and Others

CHARLOTTE, NC -- The Carolina Panthers made a couple splashes in the first wave of free agency by adding S Patrick Chung and CB Kyle Arrington from the New England Patriots. Coming into the offseason, the Panthers wanted to shore up their secondary after cutting Chris Gamble and losing Sherrod Martin and Captain Munnerlyn to free agency. Inserting Chung and Arrington into the mix should move the Panthers back towards having a respectable secondary in a division with Drew Brees and Matt Ryan.

The Panthers also announced that they have resigned DT Dwan Edwards to a two-year deal. Edwards flourished on the defensive line in his first year with the Panthers and earned a good payday because of it. The Panthers are rumored to still be actively looking for a NT to relieve some pressure off of Edwards.

In other related news, the Panthers have cut long-time left tackle Jordan Gross. The Panthers felt that his cap hit ($8.7 million) was much too high for the production they were getting out of him, so they thought cutting him would be the best option for the franchise. Carolina will certainly be looking to bring Gross back at a more reasonable contract.

Other cuts today include QB Jimmy Clausen ($630,000), K Graham Gano ($715,000), S Nick Hixson ($405,000), and OL Thomas Austin ($555,000).

Changes are made in the Mile High State

The payroll of the Denver Broncos just got a lot more flexibility, with the release of Caleb Hanie and a slew of players who would not make the 53 man roster. The players (including Hanie) gives the Broncos 7.365 million more in salary cap room to get some more players to Denver to help with the championship run.

The team now has 12.765 million in salary cap space.

The Tennessee Titans are reportedly close to a deal in shopping either WR Kenny Britt, WR Nate Washington or WR Damian Williams. When asked of the rumors, Titans GM Ruston Webster confirmed they have been in serious talks with one specific team. Webster refused to comment on which of the WRs could be on the move, what the compensation may be, or where the WR may be going, simply saying "We have been in serious talks with a fellow member of the league regarding one of our receivers. We are still in the negotiating process, and the player is still a member of the Tennessee Titans until I tell you otherwise." He continued with "The 3 players are still on the block until the trade contracts have been signed and passed through league officials, until then Kenny, Nate and Damian are all members of the Titans."

Paul Kuharsky of ESPN, tends to think the player on the move is Damian Williams, and that the suitor might surprise people, saying "Damian is a player that has never really been given a fair shot in Tennessee. He's a hard-worker, and has produced well when given the opportunity. A team would be well-advised to bring the former 3rd round pick to compete for a #2 or #3 job."

Jim Wyatt, of the Tennessean seems to think the player could be Nate Washington or Kenny Britt after the Titans just acquired Miles Austin in free agency. "Kenny is a great player, he can be the #1 WR on many teams." Britt played much of the season, but was on a snap count as he his knee recovered from surgery. Reports are this offseason he has been running and cutting great. Wyatt continues with Washington, "Nate is a great #2 or #3, if you're looking for a big play #2, #3 WR I don't think you can get much better than Nate." Washington has posted catches of 71 yards in 2 of the past 3 years. When asked what Wyatt expected the compensation to be, he replied "Well Kenny was a 1st round pick just a few years ago, I'd expect nothing less than a 2nd. Nate is a hard player to place a value on, but I'd expect something in the 3rd or 4th for him. He's better than any receivers you're going to draft there, that's for sure."

We will update this with any new revelations in the story.

Jacksonville Jaguars Start Free Agency Off With A Bang

The new regime in Jacksonville wasted no time establishing their identity. Free Agency began with the sigining of four players: Cliff Avril, Jason Jones, Danny Amendola, and E.J. Biggers.

Former Detroit Lions defensive end Cliff Avril, who played high school football for the nearby Clay High Blue Devils, signed a four-year, $32 million deal. He is expected to play the Leo role in Gus Bradley's defense, which was filled by rookie Bruce Irvin in Seattle last year.

The Jaguars added another defensive end, this time one head coach Gus Bradley is very familiar with. Jason Jones, who served as a rotational defensive lineman in his one year in Seattle, signed a three year deal for $12.6 million. These two signings leave the status of Jason Babin, who was claimed off waivers from Philadelphia last season, in limbo.

More help was added on the defense with the signing of cornerback EJ. Biggers. The former corner from Tampa Bay signed a four year deal with the Jaguars. He is deperately needed as the Jaguars appears to be losing both Rasehan Mathis and Derek Cox.

The offense was not ignored completely however. WR Danny Amendola was added to an already solid group of starting receivers in Cecil Shorts and second year pro Justin Blackmon. Amendola is expected to fill a similar slot role as he played in St. Louis.

But it does not appear that the Jaguars are done signing. They still have near $6 million in cap space. Expect the offensive line and secondary to continue to be addressed.

Focus on Strengthening the Defense

There were rumours the Texans were going to make a big splash in free agency, and while they didn't offer a mega contract to bring a guy like Mike Wallace in they did come away with a nice haul in the initial stages of free agency.

Safety Kenny Phillips is the big name to come in and he is likely who the Texans were very excited about within the last week. Also joining Phillips on the defensive side are former Cowboys NT Jay Ratliff who played his best under the tutelage of Wade Phillips and former first round pick Adam Carriker. It's safe to say the Texans were less than thrilled with their defensive performances against some of the elite teams this past year.

I spoke with NFL Network's Ian Rapoport this week about the Texans' moves thus far. "Everyone was expecting a WR to take the attention off Andre Johnson, but to a lot of league insiders these moves make more sense" Rapoport stated. "You are going up against Gronk and Hernandez in New England, Pitta in Baltimore and let's not forget Cook and the two young Colts TEs Fleener and Allen. The Texans just didn't get the play from the safety position they had hoped for".

Kenny Phillips can play either free or strong safety but is more suited to manning the deep middle while also having enough size to play man coverage on the league's premier TEs.

One pick which a lot of people saw coming was a reunion of Ratliff and Phillips. Ratliff was an all pro in Dallas and he never played beside such a dominating defensive lineman like JJ Watt. "Man, I'm happy to be back with Wade" announced Ratliff, "I like what he asks his linemen to do and it fits my style perfectly. Bringing myself and Carriker in, and obviously having a tremendous guy like Watt as well, I think we can be the best d line in the league"

The addition of Carriker is an intriguing one. Drafted in the first round out of Nebraska he has been nothing more than a solid depth guy throughout his career, but there is hope in Houston that both he, and Jared Crick can contribute across from Watt.

The other move made by Houston was to resign James Casey. The versatile FB was considered a priority resign and it makes a lot of sense to have him back.

The next few days and weeks leading up to the draft will be interesting as Houston still has over $4m in cap space. They may look to bring in some more pieces before getting ready for the draft.

The media has speculated for months that Tim Tebow's NFL career may have come to end following the poor experiment conducted by the New York Jets with him. There appears to be at least one team willing to give him a shot, the Green Bay Packers. Tebow matches well with Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy's importance placed on the character of players, and he possesses a workable skill set while never really having the opportunity to be developed by a quarterback guru. The Packers have also struggled in recent memory with goal line offense, and Tebow could serve as an asset in that department.

Lions upgrade at cornerback, still look to add help on defense

By Chris McCosky The Detroit News 7 Comments

The Lions signed former Arizona Cardinals cornerback Greg Toler

Allen Park - The Lions took a major step Tuesday in upgrading their secondary.

The Lions re-signed cornerback Chris Houston and signed former Arizona Cardinals cornerback Greg Toler. The Lions' secondary was one of their biggest room for improvement and they did just that.

Houston signed a 5-year, $30 million contract. The deal includes $12.5 million in guaranteed money. Houston, who was easily the Lions' best cornerback and only bright spot on a poor secondary, was a priority for the team. Houston was originally looking to top the 5-year, $38 million contract that former Lion Eric Wright signed last year. However, after not receiving as much interest on the market as he had hope; Houston signed for a bit less.

Toler signed a 3-year, $13.5 million deal and is expected to start opposite Chris Houston. Toler has missed time over the past few years, including all of the 2011 season, due to injury but has excelled on the field when healthy. Toler likely would've been able to get more money had he not had a questionable injury history.

---

NFL sources indicate that the Lions are not done in free agency. The team has been looking at linebackers, safeties, and defensive linemen. The team is still looking to replace six more defensive starters either through free agency or the draft. The Lions are reportedly not that interested in bringing back safety Louis Delmas at his current asking price and already lost defensive end Cliff Avril to the Jacksonville Jaguars. It also doesn't appear that the Lions are interested in bringing back linebacker DeAndre Levy.

The Lions are also still waiting to hear if offensive tackle Jeff Backus is going to play in 2013 or retire.

PATRIOTS RELEASE LLOYD

The New England Patriots have reportedly declined wide receiver Brandon Lloyd's $3 million option bonus, saving the team a total of $4.9 million against the salary cap in 2013. New England will still be on the hook for additional money guaranteed to Lloyd. The move was reportedly influenced by Lloyd's off-the-field behavior. The 31 year-old target caught 74 passes for 911 yards and four touchdowns last season. The move comes as a surprise considering Lloyd's close relationship with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels; New England's lack of depth at the wide receiver position is also a concern, as Wes Welker and special teams ace Matthew Slater are the only two players still on roster at the position. New England currently stands at $12.1 million under the salary cap, with the 2013 NFL Draft quickly approaching.

Bills Release Long time Kicker Rian Lindell: Sign K Lawrence Tynes

Under much scrutiny this past year for his short kickoffs, and his even shorter field goal attempts, the Bills decided to release Rian Lindell from his contract. The move to sign Tynes shows that the Bills had a plan to replace Lindell quickly and in the process saved 1.5 million in cap space.

Tynes reportedly signed a 2 year 2 million dollar deal to be the new Bills placekicker.

BILLS PASS ON QUARTERBACK AND RECEIVER, TAKE ANSAH IN ROUND 1

With the 8th pick in the 2013 draft, the Buffalo Bills went BPA and selected Ezekiel Ansah of Brigham Young University. Ansah is a raw player with unlimited potential and is a perfect fit for the new Bills hybrid defense. Ansah is particularly good at stopping the run and has a non stop motor. While his playing experience is limited, he has the potential to become a feared sack artist across from Mario Williams in the 4-3 or as a 270 pound long armed OLB in the 3-4.

Here is a transcript from GM Gonzo's press conference after the selection:

"Our intention was never to reach for a Quarterback in the first round of this draft. The only quarterback we would have considered was Geno Smith who obviously went first overall to Kansas City. Once that selection was made, Quarterback was completely off the board for us.

Question: Obviously QB is a huge need but you already explained that, was there any consideration to taking Cordarelle Patterson with your first pick?

"We considered selecting Cordarelle with our first pick. He is an electric player when the ball is in his hands, but he came in much shorter than we were expecting, and were worried about his hand size because he dropped quite a few balls while in college and at the combine. On top of all of that, we feel this is an extremely deep class of WR's and reaching for a WR in the first round was not in our best interest."

Question: So why Ezekiel Ansah? What drew you to him as your pick in this situation

Ziggy is a player who has so much untapped potential. He has only played for 2 years and has made huge leaps and bounds. I think he showed his true potential at the combine as well as dominating offensive linemen at the Senior Bowl game. 270 pound guys with 35 inch arms that run 4.6 dont grow on trees guys. I know that people are going to say, well his college production wasn't there, but I disagree. Either way, and let me say this, we were going to take who we felt was the best available player at the time. If Ziggy was off the board, we most likely would have taken Dion Jordan or we would have strongly considered Eric Fisher at pick # 8 if he was still there.

Question: What about Jarvis Jones who is still on the board as we speak

You know we like Jarvis as a football player but we have a couple of questions on him that were not sure can satisfy us to select him that high. First, everyone knows about his medical situation at Southern Cal. I mean thats scary stuff period. Secondly, while he is a great pass rusher, we have our doubts about him stopping the run at the NFL level. We have been one of the worst run defenses in the NFL for the last couple of years and adding him wouldn't have helped that situation. We feel with the addition of Calvin Pace, LaRon Landry, Mike DeVito, and now Ezekiel Ansah, we are on our way to helping shut down the run game.
