The price isn't even that high. A lot of people are overrating these second rounders.

Overrating the #33 pick in the draft?
I guess Alex Smith is a better haul than Armanti Edwards but...

It's the Chiefs it's true. No matter what GM/HC they have in place this is what they do.

Does it even matter? This franchise hasn't been relevant in 30 years and this will just ensure they're a walking punchline for the next few years.
This is what the Chiefs do.

Rumor is we were talking to all the top free agent corners at the combine, so our next move is probably to swoop in on a corner. Although I don't see us trading up for any corners in this draft.

For a guy who can be a good quarterback? If you look at what the market for QB's are, it's pretty high already. Value wise, the #33 pick in the draft is chump change for a QB that can take you to the playoffs. Even if it doesn't work out, you aren't really setting back your franchise by losing one high pick. The upside completely outweighs the downside here.

The playoffs ARE NOT THE GOAL. There is very little upside with Alex Smith. Who gives a flying **** about making the playoffs?

I think it's Desmond Trufant at 31 and Zach Ertz at 34 personally.

He is an upgrade over Cassel and could give them some steady QB play, but that is a ton to give up. If I was a Chiefs fan I would not be happy but it could end up being a decent move, but let's be honest this is a rebuilding franchise and that is a lot of value to give up for a guy who is considered a middle of the road QB. He isn't over the hill but Alex isn't really a guy you are going to build a team around and feel great about it.
The real story here is the 49ers. They are already probably the most talented team in the league and they just got essentially another first rounder this year and what more than likely will be an early second rounder next year, all for their backup QB. Wow.

Alex Smith can't be a good quarterback. This is like trading for James Jones because he made a bunch of 3s playing on the Heat.

You have to walk before you can run. Worry about escaping being terrible before you worry about making the Super Bowl.

That is ridiculous thinking. The goal every single year should be winning the SB, not making the playoffs. Everything you do to improve your team should be with the thinking that "this could help us win a championship" not "hey maybe this guy can help us make the playoffs".. that is just flawed thinking.
Either you get a QB you believe can take you to a SB, or you continue to trade for ****** backups from other teams who get you nowhere. It's clear what the Chiefs decided to do.

I guess I understand it though.
There's immense pressure to bring someone in. Even though their best long-term move would've been to simply wait it out and draft a QB when a good one presents himself, the Chiefs fans that are screaming QB AT ONE OR BUST are partially to blame for this move. They couldn't take one at one - the Chiefs brass knows that would be a horrible move. So they took the one they liked most at 34.
Reid truly believes he can work with Smith (and he can).
The 49ers played it brilliantly and at least one other team was in on it which drove up the price. The market helped a lot.
It clearly makes the team better going forward and was the best QB acquisition they could have made this offseason (even if the cost is really bad).
Two things are in play also for what this deal does. I agree that Alex Smith is not a great player. But:
A) He was good enough to win with an amazing supporting cast around him.
B) Andy Reid has consistently gotten the best out of his QBs.
I could see him leading them to the playoffs.

I don't know what I could say that'll make you feel better vidae...
At least Reid has a track record with QBs, so you can hope to see at least a respectable level of play from Smith (what he did last year) which for you guys, might be good enough to contend for a playoff spot.
IDK how true this ends up being, but I hope it makes you feel better.

You can't simply move up from the basement to the Super Bowl in one season. If you continue to suck you lose your fans and you lose your front office and then you have to start rebuilding again. Bringing in Smith gives the Chiefs a few years of stability before the fans start calling for heads, during which they can build a good team.

I'm starting to come around on this point of view...I think it shows Reid thinks he can win now with. Plus the the 2014 pick is conditional..If Smith hits the limits of condition, it probably means it worked out. I think Reid will get a lot out of Alex Smith.

Again, I don't care about the playoffs. Every move you make should be helping you contend for a SB. Alex Smith will not do that here in KC. He won't. It is a waste of a very high 2nd round pick for very little improvement.
It's a waste and it's a dumb move by a ******* gutless franchise.
