Default Who has the quickest release in the NFL now and quickest ever?

I saw a stat on fox saying that Arod and Rg3 have a 1.19 second release which seems ridiculously fast. Is anyone faster? Romo is also regarded as having a super quick release but I've never seen a stat on it.

All time, Marino was famous for this, was his the fastest release in NFL history or do these guys edge him out?

Drew Brees is right up there with the best of them.

I don't know what Fox is talking about. The time it takes most QBs to go from the ready position (holding the ball in front of him with two hands like he's receiving a snap) through the motion and release in a lab is about a third of a second. It's not 1.19 seconds. Any of us can go through a release faster than that.

As far as average time from snap to release in games, PFF averaged every snap from the first month of the season and came out with Rodgers in 22nd place at 2.76 seconds. RGIII was in 29th place at 3.01 seconds. Brady, Hasselbeck, and Peyton were the top three ranging from 2.49 to 2.51 seconds. So...obviously Fox isn't talking about actual game time to go through a play, either.

What the hell are they measuring?

Peyton Manning is known for a lot of things but I think his quick release is actually pretty underrated. It's the reason he lasted so long with an OL that was complete **** for the last 3 years he played for the Colts. And though he's massively overrated Brady's release is pretty quick too.

Top three in no order would be: Hard to separate them personally.

Peyton, Romo, and Arod

I know historically I always considered Marino to be in a different class but NFL network did some breakdowns:

Quote:
Good touch:
The NFL Network compared the release times of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and Dan Marino, when the CBS analyst was playing, during Saturday night's game. Romo's release is faster 0.26 seconds vs. Marino's 0.3. That's about how long the network should hesitate before releasing Bryant Gumbel, whose experiment in calling football play-by-play without much enthusiasm and with too many inaccuracies hasn't been impressive.
So all four of those guys are probably the cream of the crop.

Not sure why the measurement is all the way from the ready position in the statistics you pulled up unless the goal is to judge who could throw the quickest slant. Traditionally it's just a measure from throwing motion to release hence it being extremely small to measure.

Rivers' overall play has slipped but he's still got a lighting fast release. Id say he and Romo are the top two.

Well it was fox bro so who knows how accurrate, they also said RG3 has AD's accelleration and top speed.

I do recall watching a lot of RG3, Arod, Brady, Peyton and Romo this year and it's really hard to judge in game whose the fastest. One thing That may have affected RG3 in those timings was the number of play actions and option read plays washington ran. That has to take up some time and skew some stats in my eyes. I do know that he and Romo were fun to watch on turkey day and both had lightening quick releases.

I wonder if there is a site that shows the normal pass plays a QB runs and guns them from snap to release. That would be interesting to me.

Slowest is tough. Jason Campbell has to be up there and Maybe hmm that's a tough one, Tebow and Leftwich are up there too.Seems like most are pretty quick. Indecisive QB's would have the lower number but it doesn't mean they can't get the ball out quickly with the right play call. It would be good to define release whether it's in a controlled environment or game time situation. I think a controlled environment is the only way to truly test their release as a skill but it doesn't mean it will translate to game time. All QB's would have to run the same play and be gauged on that to truly gauge their ability however in game, the quick release is a measure of Pre snap reads and knowing who will be open depending on the play call. If it's cover 2 and the WR will have that limited window between the CB and S, then it has to be perfect (Arod does this better than anyone IMO). If it's man on a quick slant everything has to be perfect (something all the top QB are extremely good at). So really, this was a bad question because to accurately get a correct answer, it's vital to have a test scenario for all QB's against the same D and same cover scheme. Still interesting to debate though.

roethlisbergers release is lightning fast, but he holds the ball so damn long that the time from snap to throw is so long that it makes his actual time of the release seem slow

Why is it comical? Do you assume most posters on here had the privilege to see Marino play. No need to kill the thread with such a post. Please realise that a lot of posters these days don't have the same amount of perspective as older posters so pleas respect that before posting. Thank you in advance.

So go watch him, then.

You're talking about a Top 5 all-time QB and the reason he's Top 5 all-time is 99% due to the fact that he had the quickest release of all-time.

If he was playing in today's NFL, no one would be approaching his numbers.

And I don't even like Marino. I think he's a tool.

Marino is really the only QB that I have noticed how fast his release was, and maybe other QB's are faster... But the way Marino knew where to throw the ball before it was snapped, combined with the torque and velocity he threw just made his release look otherworldly.

Interesting to consider what makes something a "quick release."

Most people likely and casually assume that it's the tempo of the arm motion.

Sports Science upped-the-ante on this age-old descriptor of "quick release" and it makes perfect sense.

Shouldn't "quick release" take into account all factors from the moment the QB determines his target till the moment the ball reaches that target?

Or should it still just be who's arm-motion is the quickest?

Sports Science is wrong and over-thinking it...

It's time from start of throwing motion to ball leaving hand. You can factor in quality of the throws when comparing players if you want, too.

I obviously brought him up for a reason. I had the priveledge to watch him, he may have the quickest all time as I alluded to, however a lot of guys haven't so it's not a comical mattter. Regardless the GOAT is only one half of the question. Why is it that some guy has to come into every thread and act like a know it all and detract anyone else from posting a comment in fear of being ridiculed? Please respect the thread so others aren't afraid to share their opinion. TYIA.
