Yeah, **** mountains. It's so hard to deal with them for me right now. Part of the big difference in this game is managing your space much better than was done in other Sim City games. It was very easy in Sim City 4 and other Sim City's to just lay stuff down wherever and it would work out.
You really have to plan your city and how intersections impact traffic. One thing that you will find as you progress is traffic can completely destroy your city. It will get fire trucks/ambulances/etc. stuck and thus your city will suffer because of it. I go mass transit right after my clinic (which is the first building I get after the town hall).
Part of the fun is designing a cool city using the streets.
By the way, add me on Origin if you'd like. My name is: Forenci
I added Trogdor. We need to get a mini-SWDC region going.

It's both a similar and different game than the original Sim City games I personally like it more. It's much more reliant upon managing your cities needs. Plus specializations are fun. It also relies more on your regions and working with them.
Look up some youtube videos on it. It will give you a pretty good idea whether you like it or not.
Personally I feel like all the praise for the game has been very good, it's just that everyone is super focused on the fact that its Origin and always online. I can understand those complaints for sure and they really messed up not allowing you to just do a purely single player city but I love the interactivity and relying on fellow region cities too.

I never even considered whether it was out here, just assumed that because it's a PC game it would be. It goes live here in about 7 hours! I'll have to think about it. If they try and rip-off Australians and charge more than $60 I won't get it.

Yeah, check it out Caddy. I know all the Origin/DRM/always online stuff turns a lot of people off but if you can get past that it is an amazing game.

I'm thinking about getting Simy City now also but I don't know if I'd really play it all that much after a few weeks. I do absolutely love that game though. Civ and Sim City took hours upon hours away from my life.

Yeah, it seems like you definitely have to specialize in something that will help the region and make sense for the plot you have. I've gotten a lot smarter since my first playthrough. I check all of the underground maps before I do anything.

And the wind! My first playthrough was not fun when all my industry was blowing pollution all over my residents. Getting a much better knack for traffic now. Mass transit and splitting your local population away from your tourist population (if you are culture or gambling) almost eliminates traffic.
Game is waaay too addicting.

Haha. I'd watched a Lets Play before I jumped in, so I knew about the wind.

Honestly I think if I am going to get into a game like this I will just go back to Civ.

I have a feeling they're going to turn off the DRM on this game. It's causing all of the problems. It's frustrating, but also almost satisfying to watch it fail so terribly.

That's the overblown part. It isn't the DRM causing the problem. I'm authenticating to the server with zero issue. The problem lies server-side with some of the calculations and recovery of cities.
They created the game in that the server does calculations that the game needs to function. It is sad that their servers are performing this poorly but not at all surprising given the Diablo III launch.
Quote:
Over the next few hours, we'll be deploying a server update which should help to improve game performance and resolve the following issues:
Trading not working consistently
Unable to load/claim city errors
Getting stuck in a loop in the tutorial
|
At least a solution may be in sight?

If it didn't use such a harsh DRM, there wouldn't be half as many people trying to play server-side and we wouldn't have the issues we're having.
I can't even play on a server other than Europe East 1 because the tutorial runs when you go to a different server, and the tutorial is now broken for me (loads the map, but the tutorial never starts - I can move around and basically do nothing).

No thats what I was trying to explain. You cannot play offline. The game was designed to offload some of the processing server-side. Even if there wasn't any sort of DRM if EA's servers were having trouble you wouldn't be able to play.
Server situation is awful and it's going to get worse tonight when EU players join in.

DO ET. DO ET NOW! Seriously, it's super fun. We could totes make a SWDC region and have fun with that. It's really fun.

I love Civ too, but they're very different games to me. Get Sim City!

I actually felt the same way. I don't have very much free time these days but what I love about this game is I can play it for an hour or two and still come away feeling satisfied.

I've spent about $300+ on medical bills over the past 2-3 weeks so hopefully I can start to save some.

Ah, I understand.
You best get prepared for the summer though! I am only taking one, maybe two, classes and they are both online so I will be playing the crap out of some games in the summer.

Yeah, this SC is different from those in the past. You can play for just a little bit and get away from it easily.

If SimCity didn't have online DRM, it would have been pirated to hell. I think The Sims is one of the most pirated games. Spore was heavily pirated as well. I'm usually against these kinds of DRM, but for SimCity it seems necessary.
I bought SimCity last night, haven't played it too much yet. My Origin id is thenrk

Yeah I understand why DRM's are hated but I can understand why a company would do it.
