Default Stripes Bengal Mock #2

1. Matt Elam, S, Florida

The way I see it is, there will be a run on safeties. Vaccaro will be gone. Then if the Bengals don'e select a safety at 21 you have to worry about the Rams, Packers, 49ers, Ravens, and the 49ers again selecting a safety. That is if another team doesnt decide they want a safety too. Elam is a very versatile Safety and I think he will be a great player in the NFL. At one point I liked him better than Vaccaro. He can cover and play in the box. Exactly what Cincy needs.

2A. Justin Hunter, WR, Tenn.

Hunter is almost a Green clone. He isn't as polished and could use some muscle but he is a good player. He has a high ceiling and possibly pairing him up with an upstanding high motor guy like Green could make him a great player in the NFL.

2B. *Trade* With whom I don't know yet but one of the teams later in the 2nd move up and the Bengals gain a 4th rounder out of it.

Later in the 2nd the Bengals select

Giovani Bernard, RB, North Carolina

Bernard slides some more as RB drop in value in the draft. Martin's rise doesn't help either. Bernard goes as the third running back in the draft, all selected in the 2nd round

3. Sean Porter, OLB, Texas A&M

Good Speed and good coverage abilities at OLB is exactly what the Bengals need. Porter fits that role. Porter is a jack of all trades LB that can fill in at any spot. Swing Burfict into the middle and Porter could play either outside positions.

4A. B.W. Webb, CB, William and Mary

Small school guy with good ball skills. Below average tackler that needs to learn to wrap up. Is an experienced return man.

4B. Rick Wagner, OT, Wisconsin

With the pick they gained in a trade the Bengals select an OT. Why did the Bengals not select an OT higher in the draft? The cards just didn't play out. Honestly there is only 1 or 2 OT in the draft that could really step in a play from day one on the right side. Wagner is a high motor guy that is willing to fight for playing time. Whether or not he gets it will be the conundrum.

5. David Bass, DE, Missouri Western State

This is the kind of DE Marvin likes to draft. Tall, quick of the snap and has good hand use. If this guy went to a bigger school he would go much higher. Only problem is, he went to a small school and competition is suspect. Played great at the east/west shrine.

6A. Quanterus Smith, DE, WKU

Similar to Bass in many ways. A little taller and has good hand use as well. Played great against Alabama but the rest of the competition was suspect. Has great agility but tore an ACL at the end of last season.

6B. Knile Davis, RB. Arkansas

The Bengals already drafted one RB in the 2nd but BJGE, Bernard, Peerman, and Scott make up the Bengals backfield. Scott and Peerman are average on a good day. Davis has great speed and great hands. Also is a good blocker in the backfield. Would make an excellent third down back as he could cause a headache to the defense. Has experienced a great deal of injuries but the upside warrants a very late round pick.

A lot of Bengal love for Hunter lately. He might fall out of he 1st because of his past ACL tear, but probably won't. From my Vol's sources, word class speed and can really jump for balls. Minus is his toughness, maybe not the cleanest route runner. At any rate, assuming we sign Andre, I wouldn't be against getting a WR early, I just don't think it will occur.

I follow your logic in getting Elam with our 1st. It's a real need, why screw around and hope he is there for us at our second pick.

I would switch your OLB pick before RB.

All in all a good draft.

I think alot of the love is from an article that might have been on Cincyjungle...not exactly sure which site though. The article was about Marvin going down to Tenn. and liking Hunter. Plus he gets alot of comparisons to A.J. Green. So I can understand that.

When it comes to a RT I think there are only a handful that can step in right away. I think some will be gone when we pick in the first and then the rest are gone when we pick in the second. It just sucks so bad that we have to probably take a RT so high when we just took one a few years ago.

What do you think of Armstead if we were forced to take an OT in the second round? Agree it looks like slim pickings. I haven't seen him play or any tape of him, however, the write ups on him seem encouraging.

For what it's worth, my Vol guy also says that Hunter is a good character person.

Prefer Reid over Elam with Vaccaro off the board but either one would be an upgrade so I could live with it. The rest of it is pretty ideal for us so good job.
