Default Why No Love for AJ McCarron?

In all the talk about the 2014 class ( Looks like it's going to be a monster ) and all the QB's being talked about, no one is saying much about AJ. We got Teddy Bridgewater ( understandable ), Johnny Manziel and Tajh Boyd. Even seen mocks already with Aaron Murray in the first round.

But how in the hell does a 6 foot 4. 220 pound. 2 time National Champion. That's thrown 46 Td's to only 8 Int's and over 5,500 yards with a Cmp% of around 66.5 % the last two years just get passed over?

I know his first two years he was the game manager. But this guy can ball now. He's helping Bama win these games now not just " don't make the mistake play " kind of guy.

They've only gave him around 330 passing Att the last two seasons Would love to see him get around 450 this year. Could put up 45 Td's. He has that Matt Ryan at BC look to him. Just don't sleep on AJ cause he's turned himself into a pretty good QB.

He's surrounded by the best talent in the country year in and year out, and he's never been more than a guy who isn't going to lose you a game.

He has had a ton of talent around him for a while, but that is not his fault. He can win games for that team and he has ability. I think he is going to be a starter in the NFL, he has tools and he knows how to win. He is not Andrew Luck but I think he could be a first round pick with another solid year. It's going to be his team this year, of course they are going to run the ball and win with defense but I think we are going to see McCarron be "the guy" more than we've ever seen a Saban QB before. That started happening last year but I think McCarron will put up some big numbers this season. Doesn't hurt having Yeldon, Cooper, and company around him along with what is sure to be another insane defense. They lost a lot of OL but they will be fine there.

This season will be huge for his stock but I see him as a guy who can be a first round pick.

It's clearly because people think he is a product of the talent around him. I do like him better than the previous Bama QB's that won Titles, but I'm not sure he is an elite QB. He has a solid arm, but not a cannon. He has performed well under pressure (The SEC Champ game and Vs. LSU @ Death Valley, There was no pressure in the Nat'l Champ Game) so that bodes well for his intangibles. As noted above, this next year is a big year for him to prove himself and show that he is the catalyst of a winning team.

P.S. - He still has a ******** of talent around him.

There's another thread in this section I believe on McCarron. There are more than a few people who see him as a potential 1st round pick.

A.J. McCarron is backup material in the NFL. If he goes in the first round, then it's a joke. There's no way he's 220 lbs. He too skinny to be 220 lbs.

That is 100% untrue. The guy is a gamer. Has a stronger arm than many think. Accurate, decisive, good decision maker, very good deep ball, and throws the deep out with velocity.

Too many people like you videa, think Alabama QBs of the past. He's not exactly the same guys as parker wilson and McElroy.

If he lands on a team with a great Defense like Joe Flacco did with the Ravens, yeah he can probably win.

But you put him on a team of scrubs and he's nothing special.

Reminds me a lot of Matt Moore, who had a pretty good 2011 season.

I dunno, I just don't see it. Solid to good college QB but I don't see a whole lot to get excited about as far as NFL prospects go.

LOL. Did anyone watch McCarron play last season?? He was more than a game manager.

I don't see much difference physically between McCarron and Matt Ryan.

Guy makes good decisions with the football, can play with pressure.
If he comes anywhere close to his performance last season in 2013, I think McCarron is a near lock to be one of the top 4-5 QBs in next year's draft class.

He has some muscle on his "skinny" frame. He reportedly squats over 600 pounds!

He can play alright but the talent level is just so high in Alabama. The offense is really geared to run and I feel like it does the heavy lifting for that offense. The passing game really benefits from that dominant running game. I'd like to see McCarron have to be the guy to drive the offense I guess.

And? The 5th best QB prospect in a given draft class isn't something to get excited over. I don't get why people are acting like this guy is a top 15 pick.

Maybe he'll change my mind this year.

@ FUNBUNCHER said the same thing about Matt Ryan when I started the this. I'm with you on that one all the way.

I don't understand how you guys are knocking a kid because he plays on a good football team. This isn't a Matt Leinart type of player. He more Carson Palmer with a weaker arm than he is Leinart.

Also everyone's knock is that the offense isn't on him it's on the run game. Well look at the two teams that just played in the super bowl. Ravens were 11th and the 49ers were 4th in rushing.

When they do ask this guy to throw the ball he does it well and completes his passes. As a QB I would think it to be harder to have only 17-22 throws a game. First off not a lot of room for error. Second most of his throws come to keep drives alive.

I don't know why any quarterback with NFL aspirations would want to play for Alabama. Saban doesn't utilize quarterbacks well.

I disagree that the 2014 class "looks like it's going to be a monster." There are some real studs at the top of the draft, but after that... Outside of the top 15-20 players, the 2014 draft looks incredibly weak to me.

AJ McCarron has potential, but it's so hard to evaluate him bc of the talent around him.

I mean...think about this. His OL could step into the NFL and be one of the best if not the best OL in the NFL. They put 3 guys into the draft, 2 being first round picks, and the other 2 will be first round picks in a year.

That's 4 first round OLmen and a 5th rounder who could have been higher if not for injury concerns.

He played behind an OL that would be the best in the NFL...in college. Think about that.

I hope someone takes him in the first round. It will just make it easier for teams I like to win. But iff the Bears take him...

I view him as little more than a game manager. Is he better than previous Alabama QBs? Probably, but if you aren't better than Brodie Croyle, Greg McElroy, and John David Booty, you have problems. He made more plays last year, but it isn't really hard. With the running backs they have, defenses have to sell out for the run. And with an offensive line of first round picks giving him 20 seconds to throw, eventually, Amari Cooper is going to get open against single coverage and you can just hit him deep.

I'd pick him 4th round with the expectation that he will be a solid backup. Maybe I can swindle some team a few years down the road to give up a 2nd or 3rd round pick for him. But 1st round? Absolutely not.

His senior season will be very important to him and even more important will be his post season where he will be away from all the talent that Alabama has.
Right now, he is a tough call as National champion QB's don't tend to be great pros.
I think he has a chance but I'll have to scout his arm strength next year to see how high his ceiling is.

John David Booty went to USC.
