Fires his agent because he was under the impression he was going #1.

Sounds level headed.

Manish Mehta is someone who has been shaky with his sources and being trusted....he's not very well perceived by Jet fans along with Cimini.

But even with that, Geno should be thinking he should be the top pick or best player of the draft. And maybe we should look into who exactly told him he would be the number one pick, even a day after it was being leaked all around that Fisher was going to be the 1st pick overall.

Quote:
Several NFL executives who spent "extensive time" with Jets rookie Geno Smith before the draft believe Smith faces significant NFL roadblocks because he's "tuned out" and fails to realize he doesn't know everything.
"I'm not sure he knows how to take instruction because he pretty much wouldn't listen or talk to our coaches," said one exec. "... You can't tell him anything right now. He's tuned out because he thinks he's got it all down." Another NFL exec questioned Smith's leadership. "He doesn't have much presence, not much of a leader. I don't think he's a bad person, but that's not enough to be a quarterback in this league." Per Yahoo's Jason Cole, Smith spent "much of his time on his cell phone" during pre-draft visits. "All these other players were talking to coaches, trying to get to know people and he was over there by himself," one source said. "That's not what you want out of your quarterback."

Still can't believe how straight his face was when he told Gruden defenses have to react to what an offense is doing.

The guy may end up a baller or a bust in the NFL, but these comments won't be the reason why.

He said that was his team's mindset at WVU. We're so good you have to figure out how to stop us, we're not trying to find a way to beat you.

But that might explain why Geno seemed to have such a hard time adjusting his approach in games like TT and KSstate when the offense stalled.

Hmmm there's definitely no agenda behind this information that is being leaked by his former agent...

But it can teams into thinking this could be the next Jamarcus Russell, Ryan Leaf or Todd Marinovich.

When there's smoke, there is usually fire. Questions surrounding Geno Smith's leadership ability keep popping up everywhere and have been since the beginning of the draft process. Come on, there isn't some massive conspiracy against the guy. I'm not going to make my own opinion on Smith's leadership ability because I haven't interviewed him, nor have I spent any amount of time with him. With that said, I would caution those of you who are defending him against every single negative report because you don't know anything about his leadership abilities either.

What I've pretty much been saying the whole draft process is that this is why he had such a hard time playing against defenses who, you know... could match up with his receivers. Geno doesn't get the idea of tactical advantage; he doesn't get that he has to know his opponent so well that he can exploit their tendencies. It's like he's got this attitude that because he's this amazing athlete, he's just going to beat you. That's the way he talks; that's the way he presents himself. Then you throw on a game where he can't just throw it up and let one of his two NFL receivers beautify his stat sheet against cornerbacks who will have to get jobs related to their majors, and it becomes pretty obvious that when his guys aren't open when he expects them to be, he simply does not know what to do. And that's not calling him stupid - it's about his approach to the game. Smart people fail tests all the time because they think they absorbed enough just sitting through lectures.

And then there's this. The notion that he's got this sulky quality about him is continually popping up. There's the head-hanging during games, there's the comments that he deflects blame which we've (at least I've) been hearing since last year, there's the word that he was going to fly home before getting picked when he didn't go on the first day, and now he's fired his agent less than a week after the draft. He just sounds like a child.

And this is what I think, too. There's just too much out there. Why would there be a consipiracy against him? Nobody gives a ****. Football fans like players who play football well. Why would someone want him to fail? I think the better question is why some people want to see him to succeed so badly. Why? The guy's a quitter. He doesn't have that competitive fire and yet he still talks like he thinks he's better than everyone. You'll hear people talking all day about how "they like their quarterback to have that confidence!!" but when it comes down to it, the guy thought he was going to go number 1 overall and skipped all the All-Star games, thinking he didn't need to compete, nobody thinks he's a leader of men, he doesn't think he needs to study defensives, and he just fired his agent. I mean, I've never even heard of that before. Does anyone else know of a prospect with alleged maturity issues who fired his agent after going lower than he wanted to in the draft? I'd love to know how his career turned out.

You don't Geno studied opposing defenses?? Seriously??
He's a quitter??

Agents work for players, not the other way around. He could fire 100 agents and it doesn't IMO reflect on him as a football player, because he can't fire his teammates or coaches. Agents are parasites. Sorry. But they don't rank on the sports food chain in importance. They aren't talent.

I think Geno can play at high level in the pros, it's not about rooting for him.

Geno's confident. SOmehow that's being spun as arrogant or overconfident. Then suddenly there's a suggestion he doesn't study opposing defenses, which is just nonsense.

Every good QB with a talented WR corps thinks they are going to impose their will on the opposition. You don't think Montana or Aaron Rodgers didn't think this way?? Quarterbacks play on OFFENSE. THeir mentality is to attack a defense, not react to it. Sure you try to find out how a defense is game planning against you, but when you find a weakness to exploit, the mindset is to attack. That's what I heard Geno saying.

Calling the guy a quitter because he fired his agent makes no sense.
'Nobody' thinks he's a leader of men?? That's like....everyone.

Why are you so adamant about defending the guy? Sometimes it really seems like you simply don't look past measurables when you're evaluating prospects. Just because he's not getting arrested doesn't mean Geno can't have all kinds of very real character flags.

Sounds level headed.
Um, that is speculation. Geno said he did not fire him for anyone one thing. Some have speculated it's because of the agents advise not to play in the Senior Bowl. This is not big story in any way.

LOL, so firing your agent is evidence of a character flaw? The ties between 9-11 and Sadam Hussain are stronger. Maybe some of the guys making wild assertions and accusations should come up with some actually evidence.

With that said, I would caution those of you who are defending him against every single negative report because you don't know anything about his leadership abilities either.
But what in the world does this have to do with leadership ability?

Maybe when a person is constantly surrounded by rumors of immaturity and basically botched the whole pre-draft process, in addition to having pretty questionable tape, and yet his fans basically go the "ya'll are haters" route instead of just acknowledging the merit and scope of the criticism, there's not ever really going to be an "actually reason" those fans will accept for his failure, and when he washes out of the league are going to keep saying he was never given a fair shake. Geno's got everything to prove at this point.

Thanks. It's quite evident it is hate based on your response. So you want him to wash out of the league, huh? What exactly did he do to you? The guy didn't have a bad moment in the pre-draft process. There is no merit to criticism about events that did not take place. What you apparently fail to realize is that he was second QB taken, not Barkley, not Nassib not Wilson, etc, but you are trying to spin this like Geno is the big loser in terms of where he was drafted. Those guys fell several rounds for reasons.

Since you want to play this game, I'll remind you that Barkley straight threw his HC under the bus and the media largely ignored it. Why is that not a sign of a flawed character? Is that USC QBs are all perfect creatures who can't be questioned?

When did I say I wanted him to? It just doesn't look to me like he's got it all together.

Nice red herring.

I think its just the floodgates keep coming down when a little hole is leaked. I feel bad for the kid really, I never seen so many reports fly out like this after a prospect post-draft. I mean what do these people have to gain by saying this stuff? Worst part of it is these people are so unanimous about this...put your ******* name on it at the very least.

Regardless though, I will not judge Geno Smith until he gets in a game....the pre-draft stuff causes a bit of a pause but does this mean he's a lock to be a bust and sucks? Absolutely not. Its why I am not gonna sweat over this stuff....its fair to judge him during and after a game and how he conducts himself. He doesn't have a DUI against him, he hasn't had a mutiny on a coach or any of that stuff. He just didn't act like the ideal type of prospect you'd want during the interview.

Geno fired his agents because he got poor advice as far as whether to go to the Senior Bowl or not and also because his agents left to go to Houston after Day 1 of the draft....which indicates to me that his former agents were not the ones who told him that he needs to go back to Day 2 or that they had his back or of his best interest to leave him high and dry after he had egg on his face.

Its because Geno is a Jet and guys like Barkley are not. Jets are setup to be the pinatas by the idiots of the media and because fans view them as a joke(Understandably before though Idzik has done a great job thus far) and as such some fans like to pile it on.

I mean ESPN ridiculously overused the word "Circus" with even supposed to be "Unbiased" hosts on some of their NFL Draft programming to even take jabs at the team and have a nice laugh.

Had Geno been on another team, I don't think the fans would give him as much flack as he is getting right now. Its just how it is for Jets...they need to win and show some competence to shut the fools up. That simple. And I hope they do so and the idiots of the media have to go and find another story. Maybe they can try and use some integrity in their news reports for a change.

Part of that might be because everyone thinks Lane Kiffin is a jackass.
