Looks like I got my own question answered today:

Quote:
According to ESPN Dallas, the Cowboys will release RT Doug Free with a post-June 1 designation if he does not accept a pay cut before then.
Per beat writer Tim McMahon, the Cowboys have an offer on the table and "hope he accepts it." If not, they'll cut Free and sign a free agent replacement, preferably Tyson Clabo. It's unclear what owner/GM Jerry Jones is waiting for; Clabo would be a sizable upgrade on Free and probably cost the same amount as the pay-cut proposal, if not less. With age, Jones has become less and less willing to admit past mistakes. He blundered by signing Free to a four-year, $32 million in 2011, and can't bring himself to part with the player. Source: ESPN Dallas May 3 - 3:54 PM

Again, it's stupid to wait. I don't want him at a discount to salvage his career. That's all about Jerry saving face on a signing he made. Otherwise, there is no reason we need to be waiting on him.

Don't you have a cap guy that handles contracts. So even if Jones wants Free back then, wouldn't the cap guy say, Not at that price he is currently asking? So therefore the contract given wouldn't have been offered to Free in the first place.

At least the rumblings are getting louder and the lean is towards what we want.

Eventually all this dead money is gonna catch up to us though... and it won't be pretty. It sounds like this is something about Jerry not wanting to give up on Free, but I think it's more about not wanting to be back in cap hell.

C'mon this is revisionist history at its best. Stephen was a cap genius when the deal was signed.

Free took LESS money than he would have from Tampa. NFL/ESPN and everyone here called the deal an absolute steal.

We paid 8 million per for a "franchise" LT. Could one contend that Dallas should have been able to see his demise? Sure - but keep in mind no one in the media was even suggesting Free could bottom out into one of the worst OTs in the league.

Dallas is hoping like hell that Free will take the pay cut so Parnell can get a legit chance at starting while also saving themselves from cap hell next season. Complaining about the marriage years after the fact is nonsense. You need to speak up during the wedding if you have an issue or forever hold your piece.

Yeah, nice way to put it.

I've said a few times, it wasn't the Cowboys fault for signing him. We ALL wanted that to happen and I'm sure Jerry would've heard hell if we had let him go after developing him for all those years.

The person at fault here is Doug Free. He flushed his career down the drain and now we're having to deal with it the hard way.

I think this reasoning is why the Cowboys haven't given in to Spencer's demands. We have an offer out there for him to sign an extension on. He doesn't want it. Jerry has said publicly that he wants to sign Spencer to an extension. It must not be where Anthony wants it to be. Good on the Cowboys for not giving in.

Yea Free is an unfortunate and rare case....Boys resigned him for less than market value, Tampa Bay, Eagles, and a couple other teams were in the bidding for him at the time. It's just one of those cases where a player regresses for whatever reason, but in this case it's not indicative of the GM not doing his homework or whatever.

There's numerous examples of Jerry signing an aging or declining player to a huge contract(Barber, TO, T.New, Hamlin, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc)

Free doesn't fit into that category, IMO.

Dallas views Doug Free at a pay cut as the #1 option for competition with Parnell as it would not muddy the cap and affect negotiations with Sean Lee, Dez, Murray, and other incoming FAs. If he refuses look for Dallas to dump him either Post-June 1st or with the Post-June 1st designation and sign a RT. Clabo is reportedly the apple of our eye if we are forced to move away from Free.

Figured as much to be honest. We are trying our damnest to keep Free at a pay cut. Financially it makes the most sense but I highly question it from a football standpoint.

I hope Jeremy Parnell makes some strides this offseason and renders this worrying moot. I would love for him to be a fixture at RT.

It doesn't make any sense to me, none. Jerry wants to try and save face and because of that it lost us the #5 RT last year who fit perfectly. Yet we sat on our ass and kept waiting on the worst RT in the league to take a pay-cut.

Why would Free take a pay cut? Hes sitting at home gaining all the leverage.

He's already been told he's getting cut if he doesn't take a pay cut. Free has to decide whether to take a pay cut and remain employed or take his chances on the market that left Clabo and Winston sit thus far.

I do agree with you though. He has all the leverage but he has to weigh the decision to remain employed at a lower wage or get cut and not see another dime of his base salary (which the majority of what is left). No team is going to sign him for more than what he's going to get as far the reduced offer from Dallas.

The only way that Dallas would drag this out is if they have confidence in Parnell. So perhaps we wait until June 1st and Winston is also gone and we cut Free only to sign a lower tier FA like Locklear (NYG), Richardson (STL), Justice (IND), or perhaps a dark horse would be a guy we targeted back in 2010... Jammal Brown (WAS).

Common theme for all of them would be that they are not starters they are spot-starters or quality backups. If Dallas doesn't move soon and Free doesn't take a pay cut I imagine we have a TON of faith in Parnell. The lack of movement for Clabo honestly pushes me in that direction.

The Clabo signing is official btw per KFFL.

Well this was not great news to wake up to.

Talk about slow pain....

I'd still be thrilled if we got Winston, but I have lost hope for that. I don't buy the garbage that he is only a minimal upgrade over Free. That is a bunch of hooey!

Amen. The offseason plan SCREAMS to me that we overwhelmingly want to keep Free with a paycut rather than cut him and shell out more for a RT. I love the move financially but if Parnell isn't ready to be the full-time starter at RT I can't buy the move at all. Hard to judge Parnell from last year he looked good and with another offseason he should be even better but meeeh. If we don't play MUCH better at the spot it renders the interior line upgrade moot.

I try to buy 2 new jerseys each year. Thinking I'm leaning towards Carter and Dez this year. Wanted to wait on both, but think I'm ready to pull the trigger on both now.

My guess is it would come with a guarantee of a roster spot. So he gets slashed to say 3 million and keeps a spot on the roster vs getting cut, and likely pulling in the minimum by somebody. Still, we already dropped the ball here. Clabo was a pro bowler in 2010, and the #5 RT last year, when a guy like him is surprisingly cut you have to change your plans on the fly. I was all for Parnell until we got some surprising RT's on the market.

I'm still so angry about this whole situation though it doesn't even matter. This is one of the worst decisions we have made in a long time and being that the off-season was focused around Romo it makes this an even bigger mistake. I'd have EASILY rather had a hole at LE and let Spencer walk vs a hole at RT. Tagging Spencer jammed us up big time.

Only way I'd let this go is if we got Winston and Brandon Moore but we don't make good football decisions.

Interesting scouting Report from Broaddus on a young tackle we signed earlier in the offseason:

Quote:
A player to keep an eye on when this team goes to camp next summer is Darrion Weems who they took off Denver’s practice squad. I studied him when he was with the Patriots this past year and I have to say that I was impressed with his movement and ability. Remember the Cowboys took Parnell off the Saints practice squad and developed his game as well. Weems seems to have those same kind of traits but plays with more power than Parnell did initially. Any time you can poach an offensive linemen off a team and he develops, it’s like stealing for scouts.

He got a glowing review when we first snagged him as well. We might actually have solid developmental youth at OT.

I'd take anyone over Free.

I actually like the young Tackles we brought in. Reading up on Aderious Simmons... he seems to be in that athletic mold as well.
