First question would be... WHY? They have Shady and Bryce Brown. I guess he'll be a solid 3rd down option if Shady is injured/tired. Then again Felix might just go on to be the spot-time hero he looked like in his rookie year.

Bleh.

Because for their uptempo offense you need all the bodies at skill positions you can. Same reason they took a flyer on Arrellious Benn. He only signed a 1 year deal for the minimum so he's just going to compete for the 3rd RB spot and do some returns, so Chris Polk isn't really a world beater. Still, let's all root for him to make the roster so he can fumble the ball on a return against us after running into the back of his own blocker, that would start to take some of the sting away from the suckage he left us with.

Quote:
In his final minicamp write-up, Brian Broaddus (who was the first guy to spot Coughman) made a good case for Coughman having a real shot.

On Friday in my practice notes, I offered some thoughts on offensive tackle Edawn Coughman who was in town as a workout player for camp. On Monday, the front office added Coughman to the roster going forward with the opportunity to make the club this Summer. What caught my eye about Coughman was how light he was on his feet for such a large man. At 316 pounds, he has the movement skills of a man in the 280's. There were several reps where he was either on the front or back side and he was in perfect blocking position. It was quite impressive to hustle to get to the second level and cut off the linebacker. In his pass set, he worked away from the line well, keeping a nice base while not get overextended or reaching for his man. He will need to develop some strength and power but there is plenty to work with just because of the athletic traits.
He has played guard, tackle, and blocking TE in a pinch. Garrett loves versatility and apparently he stood out during mini-camp. Of course if he doesn't have the prerequisite strength he'll be off the roster in a hurry when the pads come on but he sounds very intriguing. Smith, Parnell, Weems, and now Coughman all have "plus" athleticism and movement skills.

Having a OT athletic enough to add something as a blocking TE would save us from needing a 4th TE on the roster too. Interesting...

Chip Kelly has a lot of catching up to do on learning Garrett's offense. I'm sure Felix will be more than happy to fill him in.

If Felix starts breaking tackles and staying healthy, it'll be more evidence of the country club atmosphere of the Pokes. haha

Stephen Jones jokingly referred to Tony Romo as a coach; HC Jason Garrett downplayed Romo involvement in game-planning, play-calling

Stephen Jones said Romo will have more involvement than any player since Troy Aikman; Jason Garrett said no more than other veteran NFL QBS

And we wonder what is wrong with this team

I think Gruden is perfect for the circus like atmosphere in Dallas. He's got a big enough personality to take on the Dallas media, put Jerry in the corner, and enough cred to get the team to perform.

I also get the feeling Gruden is waiting for this type of job.

The rest of the offensive line NEEDS to join with Travis Frederick in growing legendary beards. If defensive lines see 5 lineman with those beards they will probably call for subs. Add in Neckbeard with a clipboard (Orton) and this could have Super Bowl overtones in the background.

Plus it gives us a reason to keep Free...

Freebeard anyone? (Freebeard was a BtB creation I hold no claim) :D

Why are we content with putting garbage back on the field when we just spent an entire season suffering from his play at RT??? There's no reason for him to still be on the roster, it reminds me of when Alan Ball plagued us in the secondary for an entire season then wound up getting penciled in as the FS the following year. You knew that had epic fail written all over it before the season even started.

We seem to love tormenting our fans by bringing back the obvious trash. Did our FO watch different games than we did last year? Because it's clear as day that Doug Free sucks ****.

It takes a lot for me to get pissed at our FO decisions, but this one qualifies because it's a slap in the face to the fans.

I'm okay paying Free that amount if he's merely a back-up. I don't want him smelling the field.

You have to factor in future financials. We couldn't outright cut Free and still sign Dez, Lee, Carter, and the myriad of future players as well as potential free agents.

There is one VERY good reason he is still on the roster. If you cut him now you pay him the same amount as if you keep him. With a wage slash he'll save the team money and allow them to cut him next season and SAVE against the cap. Dallas had their hands tied. Cutting him AND signing his replacement would of crippled our ability to keep under the cap and insure the franchise's future.

Also want to point out that Free CANNOT earn the full value. This wasn't an incentive based cut. It is a flat cut and if 2010 Doug Free appears it'll be a massive steal. Of course if 2012 Doug Free shows up I imagine he'll be backing up Parnell. Apparently THIS YEAR is guaranteed for Free but next season is not. So if he is still a miserable git and earns zero playing time he'll be cut and we can draft/sign our hopefully BACKUP RT. If Parnell flounders and Free has to step in and doesn't perform well then of course we have problems.

As far as Hargrove he's versatile so it works. He can play inside and out and be a solid depth guy.

2 year, $3.5M per year is not that bad at all. I wonder what the 2nd year terms are. Guaranteed? Gotta thank the FA landscape for enabling us to lower his price tag.

Hoping he just mans up after learning this lesson. I definitely don't consider him a lock to start either.

Here's to Parnell starting, I guess. He looked decent in his time last year, but getting starting reps is a whole different ballgame.

I read year 1 is guaranteed but year 2 is not.

Performance on the field certainly trumps everything, but I still like the way Free has handled himself this offseason. He's been an active participant in the offseason workouts, took part in the Cowboys' recent golf tournament, and hasn't whined to the media about the pay cut. Compare him to the way Mike Jenkins conducted himself last year and the difference in professionalism is obvious. So I'm pulling for Free to rediscover his 2010 form.

He certainly has said and done all the right things. His play was PUTRID which is why everyone here hates him. With that pay cut and the team's support of Parnell look for a VERY entertaining battle for the RT position.

I think the majority here would LOVE to see Free go back to being one of PFF's top rated OT's but would settle for Free being invisible on the field rather than a constant talking point.
