It's become clear to me that guys who get deals like this, and guys who remain curiously unsigned (Braylon, Rhodes) are bad locker room guys. They probably lack work ethic and don't care much about winning from Monday to Saturday.

Eric Winston might be one of those types also. Or he might be Jason Collins-y or something.

I don't think there's any question about Winstons work ethic, but him being Jason Collins-y wouldn't surprise me one bit. I think it's more the fact that he's been drastically overrated for years at the best RT in the game and his play simply doesn't warrant it, regardless of what the "experts" say.

That's usually how it is, the "safe" OLBs for a 4-3 usually bust.

McClain wasn't really considered safe IMO. Curry was a bust, Rivers was a bust, Ernie Sims was a bust

It's hasn't been good for 43 OLB taken in the top 10-15 lately.

Its insane that AJ Hawk is better than all of those guys, and probably only because he got moved to 34MLB

Since we have Curry and Rivers we might as well bring in McClain now.

So what's the over/under on the amount of time before McClain gets arrested again in Decatur, Alabama?

Also I think Rolando's place in the HOF is secured. Problem is the HOF in question is regarding stupidity.

Quote:
Officers arrested NFL player Rolando McClain on a charge of giving a false name to law enforcement Tuesday after he signed a citation for overly dark window tint as "(Expletive) y'all," Decatur police said.

When a patrol supervisor asked McClain to put his real name on the ticket, McClain told the sergeant, "That is my name," said police spokesman Lt. John Crouch.

How was he able to keep his character flaws under wraps during the draft process?

It really is amazing. When you're this much of a turd, it should have came out or been discovered at some point during the draft. Yet he was as clean as they come.

Any idea how much Rolando made during his NFL career? I wish I could retire from the NFL @ age 23.

One quick question I'm not sure anyone would know, but don't you have to be in the NFL for 4 years before you're fully vested in your retirement?

I don't know why people keep saying he is overrated. His years in Houston as a RT in the zone blocking scheme he was a top 5 RT consistently and always had great feet. Last year was more above average then it was top 5, but it's more his contract demands that he won't lower. He's already been said to have turned off quite a few teams with what he was asking for, same for a bunch of these veterans.

It's not a surprise that as soon as Woodson lowered his demands teams came calling, Winston has not been drastically overrated. Him getting cut the previous 2 times came as a surprise for a reason.

They guy has never been a top 5 RT consistently. He's a guy who got popularity for being an OT on one of the leagues best running teams.. He's stiff in his protection and is constantly giving up pressure in pass protection. He gets by with so many holding calls its not even funny. He's had 20 penalties and 23 sacks allowed in the past 3 years, by comparison, David Stewart, who I actually do consider a top 5 RT in the league rarely gives up penetration and has accounted for 13 penalties and 10 sacks over the past 3 seasons. He did miss 5 games during that time due to injury, but even if you want to throw another 2 seasons so you compare 5 of Stewarts seasons to 3 of Winstons, Stewarts stats are 19 penalties, 13.5 sacks allowed. In fact, in Stewarts 7 years as a starter he has had 26 penalties for 22 sacks allowed.

Winston is just a player who has been greatly helped by the media and PFF falling in love with him. He is a solid run blocker, but overall I fail to be impressed with him as a player.

Winston wants $3-4m a season. In a league where there are 14+ RTs that average over $3m a season, I don't think it's because he's pricing himself out of the market.

In the words of Captain Picard "Sometimes you just have to bow to the absurd".

I was rolling when I read that story about McClain. What an entertaining jackass.

Well what do you want to put more faith in, your opinion of him in Houston or where he actually graded out? It's not like PFF just makes up stuff, he is compared to other RT's in terms of sacks, hits, hurries, etc. Of course it isn't an exact science but it's better then "he sucks dude I promise". 2009-2011 he was a top 7 RT in pass blocking and run blocking, graded out in every category as such, and that was a big reason so many people were surprised he was cut to begin with.

Maybe you could tell me what reason the media and PFF have for "loving him" then maybe? Did they just randomly pick a player and decide it would be him? Why not Doug Free since they are just heaping praise on terrible RT's?

It really is amazing. When you're this much of a turd, it should have came out or been discovered at some point during the draft. Yet he was as clean as they come.

In wondering if he developed a mental illness. It is wierd how he was regarded as a high character player coming out then all his arrests occur while he is in Decatur Alabama.

I think I warranted enough to show that he's not a very good RT. I put more faith in my own opinion, having watched the game myself. I don't care what you think about him, that was never my worry. I don't know what PFF uses as a criteria, but I watched every KC game last season and he wasn't playing well. When he was with Houston, I was never impressed with him either.

If you go back to my original post, it refers to him being the best RT in the game, which many people still believe, and more so believed this when he was in Houston. His play just doesn't warrant him being referred to as the top RT in the game. Even your numbers you threw out there said he was ranked top 7. That's not the best RT in the league. I'd say he's closer to 10-15 personally.

The media fell in love with him once he had a good season, they automatically moved him up and gave him respect as a top RT. However, his play hasn't warranted that recently.

You can disagree all you want and I really don't care.

Jets QB David Garrard is retiring because of complications with his surgically-repaired knee.
