Curt Warner, Seahawks RB from the 80s. Most of you are probably too young to remember him, but he was great before he blew his knee out. That was back in the day when a torn ACL, particularly for an RB, automatically meant the end of your carerr.

Thought of a few more.

Even though it was mentioned by OP I wanted to highlight Sterling Sharpe again.

In the three years prior to his career-ending neck injury:

1992: Led the NFL in receptions, yards, and touchdown catches
1993: Led the NFL in receptions, yards, and touchdown catches
1994: 5th in receptions, 14th in yards, and had 18(!) touchdown catches which was 2nd in NFL history at the time.

Keep in mind his primary competition at the time was Jerry Rice, Cris Carter, Andre Reed, Tim Brown, and Michael Irvin. So the potential "weak year" excuse doesn't work.

How about Brian Westbrook? If not for concussions and knee injuries he would probably hold quite a few NFL records regarding yards from scrimmage.

Splat took the last one I was thinking of which of course is Priest Holmes.

Depending on your definition of greatness (or continuing greatness) you could easily add players like Michael Irvin and Troy Aikman who were great but were unable to continue due to injuries.

Im going to say Terrell Davis first and foremost, the most dominate HB in the late 90's that because of a dumb INT and him being a baller decieded to go chase it down and make the tackle which led to blowing his knee out. I can only imagine what kind of career he would have had...but his 4 years were amazing and he was only getting better.

LaVar Arrington, One of my best friends growing up was a HUGE skins fan and i watched alot of redskins and Arrington was so dominate and such a complete player... but injuries stopped what could have been.

Another honarable mention would be Courtney Brown, he was the perfect DE. Size, speed, strength.... whenever he was healthy he showed flashes, and it was just bad luck, pure and simple...would get hurt with an elbow injury and then get healthy and his knee would act up or his foot. But when looking him up to get a little insight on the injuries i saw this.

"At the Penn State pro day Brown measured 6'4⅞" 271-pounds, ran a 4.52 seconds forty-yard dash, had a vertical leap of 37" and bench-pressed 225 pounds 26 times"

I mean that is insane, he was a bust no doubt but it was more so of being so injury prone not like a JaMarcus Russel bust where he just sucked.

He had 6 or 7 good years, which is probably more than the normal life expectancy for a back but i agree it seemed like it wasn't long enough. Great guy too by the way.

Lavar Arrington also never learned how to actually play linebacker instead of just freelancing around and using his freakish abilities to make plays, so it wasn't just injuries that kept him from greatness.

This. The injury didn't help, but it was more him freelancing that drove the coaches crazy

I don't know about "greatness", but Fred Taylor is number 15 in career rushing yards despite only playing a full season twice.

He wasn't going to be great or a hall of famer, but as far as guys who would've been good, I'm going to nominate Mr. Chaddeus T. Pennington.

That's a good one as well. I remember in about a 2000ish issue of ESPN they had a humorous "fake news" section where Fred Taylor was out for the season with an injury after tripping over the yard marker. I always get a good laugh thinking about that.

To go along with the Jags, I don't know if Mark Brunell was every going to be considered one of the greats, but injuries derailed his career somewhat as well.

Tony Boselli on the other hand, was regarded by most as the best LT in the game until the injuries started occurring. He likely would have been considered one of the all-time greats if he could have put together a few more seasons before the injuries started coming

Boselli should have had another 5 great years had he not had the injuries. Would have liked to have seen another former Trojan, Jason Sehorn, stick around longer.

Boselli played his last game at the age of 29. He still finished with 5 Pro Bowls, was a 3-time 1st team All Pro and a 1990s All Decade selection.

What's really impressive is that Boselli had such difficult competition for All-Pro honours, perhaps the greatest era ever for OTs. The three years Boselli was All-Pro the other 1st team tackles were Larry Allen, Jon Ogden and Orlando Pace - two 1st ballot HOFers and a future HOFer. Willie Roaf (HOF) and Walter Jones (a HOF lock) were also competing for honours. Boselli finished his career at 29 with the same number of 1st team All Pros as Roaf and Pace - 3. Ogden and Jones had 4. Boselli might've added another 2 or 3 1st team All Pros and finished with 5 or 6 had he stayed healthy for just another 5 years.

If Boselli had been born 10 years later and was drafted in 2005 instead of 1995 he'd be 1st team All Pro every year. I'd still vote yes for the HOF. The only guy I've seen dominate Bruce Smith when Bruuuuce was still in his prime.

Sean Taylor, wow, good call.... but obviously that was a non-football injury.

Someone earlier mentioned Robert Edwards. Thats' before most y'all's time.
Google him. Here, I did the work for you. Sad sad to see that play. I think that was Jim Kelly consoling him... never saw that film before this. Damn. Hate knee injuries. To anyone.
Quote:
Edwards was chosen by the New England Patriots in the first round of the 1998 NFL Draft. He rushed for 1,115 yards for the Patriots in the 1998 National Football League season, before blowing out his knee at an NFL rookie flag football game in Hawaii. Edwards barely escaped the injury without having his leg amputated below the knee, and he was told he might not walk again.

Edwards would not play football again until 2002, when he made his return with the Miami Dolphins
By the way, anyone here know the name Napolean McCallum? He was a fine RB, before that play. Caution on that.

When people reference ugly sports injuries, the McCallum one is often forgotten.

Mostly RBs come to mind:

Bo Jackson
Gale Sayers
Earl Campbell

I think injury may have robbed each of those guys from being in the GOAT discussion. They were that good.

Other notables:

Terrell Davis
Jamal Anderson
Billy Sims
Ickey Woods

Wow.. I really, really, really shouldn´t have watched that...
