Wait, wtf why do you have to return him? I'm probably not that knowledgable about such things, but is it like a local law or something? That's ******* terrible.

Our dog (granted, she's a little 19 pound terrier mutt) tried to bite the vet all the time when he tries to do stuff. I mean, it's nothing like she's intending to kill or something, but if she connects it would for sure draw blood.

EDIT: Nevermind, I just read the 2nd part. Ya, that sucks, but I can see why you can't take the chance. :(

If it was just my parents, brother, and I, we would keep him. We just can't have a dog that we're not 100% confident in around my little sister. Plus I have a lot of little cousins.

In the end, I'm relieved that this happened at the vet and not in a tragic situation. It sucks a lot, but he'll find the home he needs. Everything points to him being somewhat abused when he was a pup. I've never seen a dog react like that, and we had a german shepard for 10+ years. She used to nip here and there, but Archer went full out crazy. It was heart breaking.

So like I said before, back on the hunt for a dog. This time we'll only be looking at young dogs with a known background.

So to lighten the mood, what are some cool things to teach your dog? As I mentioned, I have a little mutt of a dog, but she's pretty clever and learns things pretty quickly. In addition to the sit, stay, paw, etc. stuff, I've also taught her to walk on her hind legs (only for like a foot) and to play dead when I point my finger and shoot her.

Since I don't live at home anymore, I don't get a lot of opportunity to play with her or try things, but I was thinking about trying to teach her the trick where you leave a treat on the nose and then flip it to herself? Good idea? Any other ideas?

In my experience, they are very aggressive and not easy to train. They are pretty big jerks (willful), and they are not necessarily pleasers. If you want a Chao, you need to be SUPER consistent. If you allow any kind of leeway, the dog will rule. Potential disaster.

I own a pitbull/staffordshire mix. She is a great, great dog. She is a super sweet dog, and she loves everyone (dogs and people). She even likes to play with the cat (though the cat hates her guts). I had never owned a dog before this one, and it is the best!

That's what I remember. I still have fond memories of him but one of the most traumatic experiences from my childhood was when my dad told me he was hit by a car. That was the first time I saw my dad cry. :(

My sister was talking about how the internet is obsessed with cats, and it made me think of this thread. I find it interesting that this board is more in love with dogs.

I have a german sheppard/ huskie mix, great dog. He is super mellow and likes to snuggle. He knows High five, shake, sit, stay, and we are slowly teaching him how to fetch stuff out of the fridge.

I taught my dog to wave (kind of). Her wave is actually her putting both of her front paws in the air while rising up onto her back legs. My mom has a Border Collie and we taught her left and right.

The cool thing to do with dogs is to teach them hand signals. If I reach out my hand palm up, she sits. If I put my fist out, she waves. If I put my pointer finger on my nose, she sits and watches me.

I've always been curious too.

Our family friend have a dog that they can ask "hows life buddy?" and he barks to simulate "rough, rough". Then they ask him "whats on that tree buddy?" "bark, bark" and then he can do army crawls and play dead. I don't know if he went to a school or something with a trainer or if they just knew how to do that.

Its more of forcing them to do something over and over again.

So for like shake or paw. You would hold a treat grab there paw and say "Paw" over and over. You keep doing it until they do it on their own. You know the whole Pavlov thing.

Honestly, I think it has a lot to do with the type of dog and the personality of the dog. The first dog our family had was a beagle, and she was crazy and wouldn't ever listen except for sit. The dog we have now is a rescue dog that had to have been abused, because she is very timid and I honestly think that plays a big role in her listening.

I started when she was less than a year old, and would just have little treats for her. I would have the treats in my hand and she knew it, then to sit I would just say sit and push her back down. To lay down, I'd pull her front paws forward, roll over I'd actually hold her and roll her over on her back. Basically, lots of repitition and phyiscally making her do some of the movements when she was little and I guess it stuck.

Use treats. Show them the treat, tell them to sit, if you have to, force their butt to the ground. Then when they do it, pet them and give them a treat. Many breeds of dogs can learn tricks in a couple of minutes.

You can also train dogs through negative actions. We had a dog hit by a car, so when we got a new one, we wanted to train her to not go in the street. How did we do it? We stood in the street, called her to use, and when she came, she got yelled at. After about 30 minutes, she never went into the street,

We stood in the street, called her to use, and when she came, she got yelled at. After about 30 minutes, she never went into the street,
I'm doing this today. I'll be damned to have another dog hit by a car!

My best friend had a husky litter and I was fonna buy one. A bi-eyed black and white husky. Was gonna call him pirate but then my german shepherd came back home so no more need. I love huskies and malamutes especially bi-eyed. I also owned a chow chow germab shep mix. Chows are the meanest ******* dogs ever.

I had a German shepard/ Akita mix. She was just amazing, we didnt teach her any tricks until she was 10 and she could learn anything in one session. I remember her pet rock that she used to carry around the yard, I remember her being mauled by another dog at age 15 and thinking she would lose her leg, but she managed to live another 2 years, I remember the day she died she ran off into the neighborhood and when I came home from school she had passed away under our maple tree, I remember burying her with her pet rock. I still cant get another dog because I feel like that would be like replacing her... I miss that little fur ball so much.

It was funny because every once in a while, she would walk off (not run off because she was a lazy Yorkie who never ran in her entire life). We had a sidewalk that ran to another street on the side of our house. All we had to do was follow the sidewalk and we would eventually find her.

What was crazy was when we walked her, she could differentiate between the sidewalk and the street. When we got to the curb, she would stop, sit, and wait to be picked up. She was dumb as a rock but one thing she always knew was don't go in the street.
