Default Torn ACL for Mettenberger

It was just announced that the injury L.S.U. QB Zach Mettenberger suffered was a torn ACL.

Obviously awful news that will likely end any talk of the first round.

Going to post my thoughts on how this affects the Senior Bowl in the tread pinned above.

In the end I think it could work out better for him. He has all of the talent you want in an NFL QB, but I think he is not ready to be a starter yet. If he were drafted in the first and asked to play right away I do not think that would have worked out. If he goes in the 2nd/3rd and can rehab while sitting behind someone and learn for a few years, I think he will be much better off. I am sure he does not want to hear that right now, but that is my two cents.

Late 2nd/Early 3rd to the Saints seems like the best possible situation for both parties.

I don't understand how a team can observe a QB, believe he's a first rounder and then drop him significantly because of a torn ACL. Especially when said QB does not have a history of injuries and isn't going to be running around a lot.

He needed postseason workouts and stuff to get into the first....I guess now he'll just be likely a 3rd round bargain as I think he will be a pretty good starting QB after watching him this year.

I'd love to see him drafted by the Raiders in the 2/3

Hopefully the Titans can figure out a way to grab him and let him sit the year while we figure out if Locker can stay healthy and produce for a whole season

Franchise Cutler, 1-year deal for McCown, draft Mettenberger in the 3rd.

Hopefully this does not impact his draft status much but honestly having him not have to be thrown into the starting mix right away could pay off down the road.

He has all the tools and improved greatly from last season to this season but is still pretty raw, I do not think he is ready to be a starter from day one but sitting him will help his development and tap into his tremendous upside.

A situation like Ryan Mallet's would be pretty ideal. Going to a team with an entrenched veteran, learning behind him and taking over in a year or two. Not saying that Brady is going to be replaced anytime soon - just using it as a comparison.

The thing about these fantasy personnel moves, is they ignore that the players have power. Cutler can simply refuse to sign a franchise tender. McCown can just sign with a different team.

I could see Cutler refusing to sign or the Bears not offering him the franchise tender but I have a feeling McCown will stick around if offered a longer term contract. He is essentially a journeyman QB that has been able to play well in Trestman's system. So if they were to lose Cutler I think McCown could play the veteran QB role as a younger QB is developed behind him and ready to play in a year or two.

Could be a Nick Foles type situation. Get drafted around the 3rd round then sit for a bit till he gets his chance. Mobility is never going to be a strong suit but at some point needs to work on his agility. Arm is top shelf.

Mettenberger may not even be there in the 3rd round. I obviously wasn't typing that as the gospel.

And no, Cutler is not turning down 17 mil. He's basically said as much.

They won't. He'll still go in the first round.
