This. Builds a thesis, finds some anecdotes, is adored by bubbleheads.

Someone else here made a lengthy post about The System, but if you're interested in college football, it's well worth the read. Previously I had never given any weight to calls for opening the NFL Draft up to anyone and letting true amateurs play CFB, but after reading the book, I'm not so sure that wouldn't be a half-decent idea.

I picked up the Silmarillion for the 100th time. Man this is super difficult to follow. But as a fan of mythology I actually appreciate the style. Maybe this is the time I get to read all the way through it.

The overwhelmingly popular conception is that the Brave New World is a dystopia, but I disagree, I think it's a genuine utopia.

You may look at the world in Brave New World and believe it to be utopia, but that is certainly not Huxley's point of view.

Edit: Stupid iPad autocorrect. "believe" not "be,I've"

Wait, what? I'm only on Ch 3 so far... but right now "utopia" isn't a word I'd use to describe anything

^I'm reading GJ Meyer's A World Undone about WWI at the moment. That book seems really interesting.

My local library had The Proud Tower as one of the "books of the month", it looked pretty interesting. You may like that as well.

It's pretty obvious that Huxley does not believe it to be a utopia.

So, I'm taking a literature course this semester (this is my last semester and I've been putting it off until now) and I just received the list of novels the class will be reading...

- The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson

- The Time Machine by H.G. Wells

- Heart of Darkness and Secret Sharer by Joseph Conrad

- The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

- Handful of Dust by Evelyn Waugh

- Coming Up for Air by George Orwell

I've read The Great Gatsby before so I know I'll have a decent time reading and understanding it. I haven't read anything else so if anybody has, are they interesting and good reads?

I read the Time Machine in 8th grade, don't remember much. I think it was alright. I read Heart of Darkness, or part of it, my junior year of high school. It was a tough read if I recall, just sluggish and boring. I might've been just zoned out by that point in high school. Apocalypse Now is loosely based on the book, same premise.

Read Coming up for air some years ago. It was good. Pretty depressing story, but very well written. Wouldn't mind reading it again some day, actually.

Jekyll and Hyde as well as Heart of Darkness are both short, under a hundred pages, so that's a plus. Once you get accustomed to the Victorian English, Jekyll and Hyde is decent, and while I don't think Heart of Darkness is one of the greatest books of all time like some, it's solid as well. Can't speak on the others. As far as a literature course goes, that doesn't look like a bad load at all.

With all the Brave New World talk going on, I thought I'd mention that I just polished off Fahrenheit 451 (first time through it) and it was every bit as good as Huxley's novel. Ray Bradbury was an absolute master of his craft.
