But in all honesty, I tell you that I completely expected us to take Ginn all along, whether Quinn was there or not. I have read article after article and took in everything I possibly could about this matter. They were not truly focussed on the top tier quarterbacks at all. They have really been focussing on Beck and Stanton a lot lately. Cameron truly believed that Beck can come in and be his Drew Brees, as they are very similar passers. He believes Beck and come in and learn the playbook quickly and execute his offense very well. With that in mind, I just knew Ginn had to be the pick. As much as I was doubted, I stuck to my guns and didn't conform for anyone. I will admit this, I knew the decision would be tough to make and maybe will be one that haunts us for the next ten years, who knows. No one does at this point. If we did, who would need the draft, the scouts, or the analysts anyway? Ginn was going to be the pick regardless of who was on the board, as I believe this pick was ultimately already decided coming into today. Many people around the Dolphins Organization have ties with Ginn and that includes our head coach. This has been a very real possibility for a while now and I was just trying to ready most of you for this situation.
I will continue to take flack for this pick, as I am one of the very few Ted Ginn supporters in Miami and I truly believe this was the way to go for us. And I trust that Cameron knows what he is doing, as he is one of the better offensive minds in the league. Ginn is special. There is no doubt about that. And Cameron will find a way to bring out the great player that Ginn can be and ways to utilize Ginn's talents to the fullest extent. We will have to wait and see how this pans out. All I can say is this adds instant offense for us as he will be ready to contribute a lot sooner than Brady would have been able to. I know it will take a while to digest this pick for most of you, I just hope you guys can learn to appreciate this pick one day as I am now. I know you will! One of the happiest moments in my life as a Dolphins fan and a day I will not forget anytime soon. I just want to really thank you all for your input throughout this process and the chance for me to share how I feel. GREAT DAY.... hope tomorrow is the same! Go 'Phins!
The more and more I love at it, the problem was not passing on Brady Quinn. If they didn't feel Brady was the guy for this team then thats fine and I can completely understand that. The huge problem was that we reached for Ginn. No WR after Ginn came off the board until 23. Ginn was expect to go 19th.
After sitting back and looking at it. The Jags traded back from 17 to 21 for get their guy. The Broncos were at 21. It's no secret that the Broncos wanted a top 10 pick. Why not move back with them. Get the number 21 pick, a 2008 1st rounder a another later pick in this year's draft. Then if Ginn was going to be taken early we could have moved back up with either Carolina or Jacksonville who were both looking to trade down. We would have gotten the player we wanted at a much, much higher value spot and picked up some good picks for next year in the process.
That was a real problem. Not passing on Brady. We did not get value for our pick and that is a definate no no when picking in the top 10. With all that said, Buffalo did the same thing last year and came out smelling like Roses with their pick of Donte Whitner. No reason we can't do the same.
I mean, with Brady Quinn falling so far, We had it set up perfectly to trade back in the 1st round get more picks and then trade back into the 1st round to get both Brady Quinn and Ted Ginn, Jr without even giving up much from our original supply of picks that we entered the day with.
So again the problem was not picking Ginn. The problem was that after everything unfolded we could have got him and gotten much more to help build this team. Seems like all the other teams have effectively traded up and down to get their guys while we have just stood pat and reached.
Although I do have to say. After seeing the results of day one. I like what we are doing on offense. Between Ronnie Brown, Lorenzo Booker and Ted Ginn, Jr. We have three guy that can take it the distance on any given play. Booker brings alot of new dimensions to the offense as he can split wide, and he is great in the open field. I actually think there's going to be times where you see Booker and Brown in the game at the same time. If Beck pans out, its going to end up being a better draft then we all think it is right now and we will be alot more explosive and bring alot more to the table offensively then we have since Dan retired.
Now if we can trade Booker and Ricky for some 4th and 5th rounders and maybe pull Ben Patrick with our 4th round pick. I'd be ok with how everything it turning out as at least I am seeing some direction with what they are trying to do and how they are trying to build this offense.
