Default Compensation Picks?

Does anybody know how the compensation draft picks are awarded? I know it's based on FA for the year before but how exactly do they calculate it?

The only 3 signings that stuck for us last season where Joey Porter, Jesse Chatman and Jay Feeley. All made pretty modest contributions.

On the flip side we lost Jeff Zgonina, Travis Minor, Sammy Morris, Damion McIntosh, David Bowens, and Darren Barnes.

So we should have at least a lower round pick or 2 coming for us.

What I wanna know is, do players we released due to cap reasons count in our favor. Because if they do, we also lost, Daunte Culpepper, Joey Harrington, Kevin Carter, Randy McMichael, Seth McKinney to that list which would hopefully net us an extra 3rd or 4th rounder.

How are these picks worked out?

Joey,
I believe released players are not part of the pool which means Porter does not count for us either b/c I believe he was released by the Steelers. My guess is they end up with 1 or 2 late rounders ( 6 or 7)
