Crumpler's Agent: ''No Deal Yet''
By Jonathan Hutton March 2, 2008
Despite a report that tight end Alge Crumpler has agreed to terms to become the newest Titan acquisition, agent James Williams told Titans Radio Sunday night that his client has not agreed to a contract -- at least not yet.
The deal is reported to be a two year contract worth $5.25 million dollars, with a $1 million dollar signing bonus.
''Where did you see that report?...We talked on Sunday, lets put it that way,'' Williams said. ''He has not signed a contract nor agreed to anything.''
Crumpler visited with the Titans last week and has also met with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks since being released last month.
Tampa has already signed another tight end, but Seattle seemed to remain interested throughout the weekend. There had been a rumor that the four-time Pro-Bowler was close to signing a deal with the Seahawks, a story his agent later clarified.
''When there's a contract signed you'll hear about it, I'm sure,'' Williams said.
The last report that surfaced on Crumpler said he was going to speak with the Buffalo Bills Monday morning. Williams denied that report, as he has with many others involving his client, a sign of posturing.
Crumpler just finished his seventh season in the league and has 316 catches for 4,212 yards and 35 touchdowns throughout his career in Atlanta.
The Titans lost tight end Ben Hartsock on Sunday. He signed a $9 million deal with the Falcons. The team's top tight end, Bo Scaife, is a restricted free agent, while fellow tight end Ben Troupe is an unrestricted free agent and has attracted attention in the free agent market.

Not only that, but I do not want to hear the phrase "He will help Young like he helped Vick" again.
There is something I need to get straight with those people. Crumpler didn't help Vick. Michael helped Crumpler.

Im kinda surprised some of you guys are actually excited about bringing troupe in. Maybe he can get his stuff together, but I hope your team doesn't overpay for him like the dolphins did with Randy Starks.
And about Crumpler dropping passes, it wont be anything new to our TE's.

<insert derogatory remark from fan from ex-team here>
Seriously though, if this article is to be believed:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...ans/index.html
It is basically this free agency's best value signing so far, knee issues or not. Ben "I'm a Tackle" Hartstock got a better deal ffs.

Kinda odd to see the majority of the posters here saying that it's a good signing, but the Falcons fans making cynical comments. ;)
I'll wait on believing the signing until it's up on the front page of TitansOnline. If we do sign him, and at the price OzTitan listed, I'll be ecstatic. He may not be the best TE anymore, but he's an upgrade over what we have. Plus, he fits our offense and has experience with a mobile QB.
As for Troupe and Scaife... Scaife is a solid TE, but he's more of a #2 TE and can be upgraded easily. Not to mention, Scaife gives us little in the passing game. As for Troupe, he just never clicked. He struggled to learn the playbook, and he didn't fit our offense. A wide-open offense where Troupe could just be unleashed would be best, as Troupe is one of the most athletic TE's in the league.

No, that's just reporting what Schefter already said. "agreed to terms"..."expected to sign". It's not "done" but few deals back out from this point on.
I'd be surprised if SI's contract details are accurate. He must have serious injury concerns if he only gets $1M in guarantees on the open market as the top TE. I mean damn, that's too low by pre-new CBA standards.

I havent seen any retractions yet. Looks like PFT just posted a bad report by Crumpler's agent. He appears to be a Titan.

Yeah, he is. Here is a quote from the press conference:
Quote:

There were a lot of things that bothered me last year and my knee was not one of them.
|
Strong words :) Although keep in mind, he did have a 55y TD in week 17 last season. How bad could his knee be if he's doing that in week 17?

If anyone is bitter it would be Falcons' fans. We've endured more than anyone else. However, most of us weren't Crumpler fans last off-season either. He's been overweight and overpaid the past two seasons.

That's cool, although he did have a pretty good 06-07. It was arguably his best or 2nd best season production wise. Not sure how a fan could be disappointed in that this time a year ago.
From a pure stats standpoint, 07-08 wasn't really that terrible. 450y while missing a few games is easily within his normal range when you also factor in the general offensive woes. Hell his 5TD's match his almost 900y 05-06 season. Alge's a big guy, he isn't exactly meant to be a slender 220lb'r. As an outsider looking at the results it seems to be, if he had Vick or a steady QB, 07-08 would have been another productive year for him. Could have still been overweight, but if the production is there it's less of a point and I don't know if he wouldn't have been typically productive last season with a bit more offensive stability.

Crumpler never really was an elite TE in my mind, even when some were saying he was after the '05 season. At this point, he's an injury concern, a drop liability, and he's on the downside of his career. I don't like the signing at all, especailly considering that by the time the Titans will (in their plan) be a big contender, Crumpler's career may be close to over.
