Default 2006 Draft Grades

Might as well continue the tradition and look at 2006 as well.

9ers

Rd.1a Vernon Davis TE
Best blocking TE in the game, explosive after the catch. Requires work on route running and cutting down on penalties but should feature heavily in the new Martz system
Grade: B

Rd.1b Manny Lawson LB
Converted from DE, a physical freak with unique blend of size and speed. Cut down early last year with season ending knee injury, may need a year to get back to full speed
Grade: incomplete

Rd.3 Brandon Williams WR
Took a fly on a light weight WR / KR who just didnt pan out. Cut after 1 year
Grade: F

Rd.4 Michael Robinson RB
Converted college QB is a ST guru and a nice short yardage option. Should see more work under Martz
Grade: C+

Rd.5 Parys Haralson LB
Missed half of rookie year with injury but bounced back to play all 16 games last year (replacing Lawson). Not a star but a usefull player on Defense and ST
Grade: B

Rd.6a Delanie Walker TE
Nice back up TE with good hands, plays with a nice mean streak, likely to get more exposure after Martz
Grade: B

Rd.6b Marcus Hudson S
Nice backup DB with good speed, size and mean streak. Recently had eye surgery. An intrigueing player
Grade: C

Rd.6c Melvin Oliver DE
Highly productive rookie year, suffered season ending injury and looking to bounce back in 2008. Plays without fanfare
Grade: incomplete

Rd.7 Vickiel Vaughn CB
Didnt make list and now with Denver
Grade: F

Overall grade: C+ (at present)
2008 will be an important year for this crop of players. Big things are expected of Davis and Lawson - both of who have points to prove. Great mid round selections have found quality backups and ST players. The miss on Williams has hurt

Giants

1 32(32) Mathias Kiwanuka DE Boston College
Good pick, good value, he was a BPA and turned out great but moved to LB and will most likely stay there. B/B+
2 12(44) Sinorice Moss WR Miami (FL)
Really didnt play much at all in his two seasons, has had untimely injuries and never stepped up. C/C-
3 32(96) Gerris Wilkinson ILB Georgia Tech
Very good special teamer and backup, all signs point to him starting next year. B
4 27(124) Barry Cofield Jr. DT Northwestern
great as a rookie, didnt do as well as a 1 year, can still get better and should gain weight. B
4 32(129) Guy Whimper T East Carolina
Was put in occasionally at LT and RT, looks like he can handle RT in the near future. Very athletic. B-/B
5 25(158) Charlie Peprah S Alabama
is now on the packers and never played a game with us F
7 24(232) Gerrick McPhearson CB Maryland
Every giants fan thought he had a future with us before the season, dont know where he is and i dont think he played a regular season game for us F

1 (9). Ernie Sims - LB: Sims is a real stud and I'd probably argue that he's one of the top fifteen, if not top ten, Linebackers in the league. He's a perfect fit for the Tampa-2 and is not only a tackling machine, but also a playmaker. He has been known to overpursue at times, but is generally a standout on a poor defense. Sims is probably the best draft pick of the Millen era, and it just so happens that Rod Marinelli had a lot more to do with this selection than Matt Millen did. Grade: A-

2 (40). Daniel Bullocks - SS: Bullocks played pretty well as a rookie and showed that he definitely had some potential. Unfortunately, he missed the entire 2007 season after tearing his ACL. He'll compete for the starting SS spot this year and many people expect him to win the job. Grade: INC

3 (74). Brian Calhoun - RB: Calhoun has only played in 7 games the last two years and both his 2006 and 2007 seasons have ended due to injury. Despite only playing a limited amount of time Calhoun never showed any reason why he deserved more playing time. If he doesn't perform well this season or gets injured again, it will likely be his last with the Lions. Grade: D-

5 (141). Jonathan Scott - OT: Scott was once considered a top 10 pick before his senior season but fell all the way to the 5th Round by the time the draft came around. Scott played a limited amount of time as a rookie and his play was up and down. Sometimes he flashed great potential and other times he looked very bad. He was injured for much of last season and really wasn't a factor after coming back from injury. Some Lions fans still hope he can be our RT of the future. Grade: C

6 (179). Dee McCann - CB: Never played for the Lions, although the organization was really high on him. He was cut before the season and last I had heard he was on the Minnesota Vikings practice squad. Grade: F

7 (217). Fred Matua - OG: Another player who never played for the Lions. He could not make the roster despite very little depth at Guard. He spent some time on Tennessee and Cleveland's practice squads, but I believe he is out of the NFL. Grade: F

7 (247). Anthony Cannon - LB: Cannon was actually a pretty decent pick by Millen. He is still with the team and he's one of our better players on Special Teams. Doesn't really provide much value as a backup LB, but should stick around because of his Special Teams play. Grade: C+

3. Omar Easy (107th overall) - FB - Penn: lol, F.

4. Scott Fujita (143rd overall) - LB - Cal: Probably the best pick from this draft, he was solid for us and I always liked him. Now with the Saints and seems to be playing pretty well. B.

Overall: F+. Fujita was the only good pick that entire year.

I give this draft a Z- if possible. When you consider who was taken after Sims it's depressing

um...so does that mean I can make ones for pre-1984? lol

actually...other than 2006-2007 it was the last time the Browns probably had a good draft.

For 2006, I'm afraid I must give Denver an A. We landed a franchise signal caller, a very solid TE, one of the best young wideouts in the game, and an excellent pass rush specialist in Round 5.

We can all give some predictions. Such as the Lions and the Jets will get an F. The Colts and the Pats will get an A. And the Giants will get a B/C, but after the season everyone will realize that they had an A+ draft. =D

Prediction: The Falcons get a F and still screw up despite having four picks in the top fifty selections. I then go ape sh*t after discovering we just drafted a garbage player with the pick we got for DeAngelo Hall (the twenty four year old two time pro bowl top five cornerback who got traded to the Raiders because we are timid and cheap).

Well, I hope not but we are the Falcons.

Which team is going to have the massive reach for a player and leave us all scratching heads - my guess the Bills, the Raiders will do something to make us say they've completely lost it, Millan will be lynched if he takes another WR in the 1st - he couldnt could he ? 32 teams will all claim that they cant believe player X fell to them - he was the player they wanted all along !

The Falcons. Dennis Dixon in the top of round two, or something like that.

The Titans will take a player who had nice combine numbers. I see them drafting Josh Barrett or Jordy Nelson in the 2nd.

Don't want to stir anything up here about a decision of a mod, but why? Now we have a huge cluster fck in here, and completely impossible to keep track of things.

Were 4-5 threads devoted to Draft grades really that unsettling for you, and causing the forum to suffer?

2006

Brodrick Bunkley, DT, Florida St. - (B+) - Very solid starting DT who will keep getting better.

Winston Justice, OT, USC - (C) - Had 1 terrible game but other than that he's looked solid, probably our future starter at RT.

Chris Gocong, DE/OLB, Cal Poly - (B) - Our starter at SLB, great all-around player.

Max Jean-Gilles, OG, Georgia - (C+) - Excellent backup and if Andrews/Herremmans decide to change positions he will most likely be a starter.

Jason Avant, WR, Michigan - (C) - Was a decent slot receiver but will never be anything more than that, if we draft a receiver in the first 2 rounds this year Avant will have to take an even smaller role.

Jeremy Bloom, WR, Colorado - (D-) - Was non-existant as a receiver and didn't do anything special as returner so was cut.

Omar Gaither, LB, Tennessee - (A-) - Great value here, our starter at MLB last season but with the emergence of Stewart Bradley he will have to move to WLB next year.

LeJuan Ramsey, DT, USC - (C+) - Was decent as a backup but might not last too much longer on the team.

Overall - B+

On ESPN stats for players, what do STF and STFY mean? I know they are a type of tackle, and I am guessing one is for lost yards (TFL) and one is for stop at the line of scrimmage. But I am not sure.

The Chiefs love Tamba Hali’s arms, which are perfect for arm tackling, the Chiefs main defensive strategy. They have secondary strategies, too, such as lying on the ground and getting stepped on.

The bad news: all the draft experts disapproved of this pick. The good news: none of those people know what the **** they’re talking about.
2 of my favorites.
