If Mallett were to ask me for advice, I would tell him to give some thought to declaring for the 2010 Draft. Even if he wasn't a first round pick, he'd be on a shorter rookie contract and only a few years from being eligible for a big payday. If he was a first round pick he might get taken late by a better organization than the ones picking low in the Draft. He already has 2 college seasons of play under his belt and a third of sitting and learning. He could potentially spend his first year or 2 in the NFL learning from pro coaches and be ready to compete for a starting job in 2011 or 2012. Honestly, unless some major flaws show up in the pre-draft process, I don't see how a guy with his potential goes any later than the second round.

Somebody will draft him in round 1 if he declares and is impressive in the post season leading up to the draft. He might go higher than people expect if some HC/GM falls in love with him. Sanchez's success with so little experience is bound to help his prospects of getting drafted higher.

This^
His accuracy would scare me off, and it isnt like he is surrounded by poor talent either.

He's not an accurate passer....at all. He has the potential, but he needs to put the work in to improve himself before he comes out. It's amazing how early these things are even brought up now.

I could see the Buffalo front office drafting him after the last 2-3 years of watching no passes being thrown more than 20 yards down field. I can then see myself crying a lot

His accuracy is a major flaw

Most NFL players enter the league with major flaws. That's why teams spend big bucks on coaches, trainers, facilities, etc. Every pick is a gamble, so why would a team in need of a QB not gamble on a someone with Mallett's talent. You're fooling yourself if you think some team wouldn't scoop him up before the end of the 2nd round.

As evidenced by JaMarcus Russell, but that wasn't a good pick and this wouldn't be either.
Ryan Mallet MIGHT lose some money if he goes back to college, but his career should benefit from the extra season of starts and development.

This. The starts he could get in college would benefit him more in the long term and potentially help him have a better CAREER.
That said, if he wants is a payday..

I think he has some big concerns he is very inexperienced, un-accurate and is very inconsistent. He would definitely benefit from another year in college to work out some of these problems and get some more experience at the position. If he decides he wants a pay day now I believe would be very foolish mistake since he as of right now I think he will go early to late 2nd, but if he decides to stay another year and prove a little more to us next year he could in the 1st.

Has nobody told this guy that NFL players make the BIG bucks on their second contract? If he comes out now he runs the risk of not making it to a second contract.

I take the payday and not risk getting hurt in college.
Better to get 20-something million guaranteed than nothing at all.

23/27, 329 yards vs South Carolina today. So inaccurate!
edit: Oh, and not to imply that South Carolina has played a murderers row of QB's this year, but no other QB has passed for even close to 300 yards vs them.

Great game for him
Unfortunately, that does not erase these...
12/35 (34.3%) 160 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT against Alabama
12/27 (44.4%) 75 yards, 1 TD against Florida
12/34 (35.3%) 58 yards, 1 TD against Ole Miss
And in the game, where he had 5 TDs and it seemed like he eviscerated Georgia, he only completed 21 of 39 passes.
If you've watched him play, he misses some wide open passes he shouldn't. He can make some 'wow' type throws, but he just isn't ready yet.

I don't know where you're getting your numbers from, but Mallett has only gone under 224 yards 1 time all season; vs. Alabama.

I've been saying this all along to justify underclassmen prospects staying, no one ever listens to it.

Risk outweighs the reward. Going back to school doesn't guarantee that you improve and have a better shot at being a better Pro. All it does is increase likelihood of injury, playing worse, etc. Sure, in most cases, you can improve your stock by going back and thus making you more money, this year is not the case.
Here is the thinking of a player:
I have pro level talent, I feel like I can succeed in the NFL right now. What would help my development more? playing with NFL coaches or back in college? Probably thinking the former. Add in that it means more money, and you have a surefire, "time to leave" mentality.
There is no guarantee these players are good enough to make that second contract, so the plan is to make the most on the first and be set in case they fail.

If Ryan Mallet comes out right now than time in college means absolutely nothing.
He played a great game the other day, but that doesn't do anything to justify the terrible numbers he has against other top caliber defenses no matter how Hasley tries to spin it. He plays in an offense that is extremely conducive to putting up numbers in the passing game. He should be doing that on a week to week basis against conference teams. He's that talented. Everyone knows that, no one is saying anything against that. But he's not always even effective as a passer, let alone prolific. Matthew Stafford was like that early in his career too, but he improved leaps and bounds into his junior year(although I had major reservations about him as well). Mallet has loads more to prove before he comes out. If he doesn't, then I'm not sure what the point is in evaluating guys in college.

Ok, there's a chance that I could be way off, but I'm starting to think Mallett could go really high...in the 2010 Draft, if he declares. The more I look at him the more I like his chances to succeed in the NFL. NFL teams will be uncomfortable with his experience, but there sure is a lot to like: size, arm strength, no health questions, seems to handle pressure well, played vs top competition in college, played under coaches with a history of coaching future NFL QBs, etc. As far as talent goes, Mallett is up there with any potentially Draft eligible QB in the country. The question would be whether teams are willing to take a chance that he may need to sit a full year or more before he's ready to play.

Even if he has to play for the Browns or Raiders? Maybe the Sheep? He's almost guaranteed to get hurt there as a rookie QB, all of those teams would throw him to the wolves as a rookie. he would be spending so much time picking himself up off the turf it would make David Carr's rookie yr with the Texans look like Fran Freaking Tarkenton, kind of like dying & going to hell.
That said, if you're 99% sure to play for a loser team as a top pick & dying/going to hell, you might as well get $20M for your troubles. Sick & twisted logic I know, but that's the way the NFL draft works.

I take the payday every time. I'd rather have a 'David Carr-esque' career than none at all.
