i don't see your point. they're still scumbags. the amount of money they get out of it is irrelevant. there's no lawsuit if there's no plaintiff.

My boss is a former lawyer. He told me that in all of his years practicing law, he never met a lawyer he'd want to go out and have a drink with.

This is a side issue, but I don't understand removing the theater shooting scene from Gangster Squad. That scene involves the mob doing the shooting, something completely different. The two really have nothing to do with each other, no one should be that sensitive about it to get offended by it.

I really doubt they will get any money from the studio for making the movie. They'll most likely be laughed out of the courtroom, because if they settle with one plaintiff, there will be three dozen more lawsuits they'll have to settle with on top of all the actual deaths. It isn't gonna happen.
And for the record, attorney fees are usually 33-38% of the total settlement.

I forget exactly what I've learned about these things, but if all 18 of them file a suit it will just get one lump sum and WB will never take it to court because it's a waste of their time - I think it would cost them more to fight it than just settle

You're missing the point here. If they settle, it sets a legal precedent for anyone else that wants to claim movies cause emotional distress and the violence causes real life violence. I'm reluctant to believe they'll allow themselves to be pushed around by money grabbing lawyers.

That's not entirely true. Because on smaller settlements, Lawyers usually require a set fee which accumulates to an insane percentage.

If you pay an attorney initially, it will turn out to be expensive because they'll just pile up the billable hours. But tort-law attorneys sign their clients free of charge in exchange of a percentage of the settlement. That's how they assure themselves of signing defendants, by not charging them a dime until a settlement is reached. And at least in Texas, it will always hover around 33%.
