Jim from Jacksonville: I've always been “old school” and one of my favorite positions was the classic fullback (I was a Dolphin season ticket holder during the 1970’s), such as Larry Csonka and, most recently, Mike Alstott. Can you please provide us with your insights as to why this position has become less of an offensive weapon and now has evolved into essentially a blocking back?
Vic: You’re comparing apples and oranges. Csonka played in an era of split backs, with a fullback and a halfback side by side in the backfield. In the split-backs formation, the fullback was the featured ball-carrier and the halfback was the blocker. Csonka was a fullback. Franco Harris was the fullback and Rocky Bleier, a fantastic blocker, was the halfback. The Redskins had great success in the 1980’s with the one-back set, and that evolved into today’s popular backfield formation, which uses one back as the premier ball-carrier and another back almost exclusively as a lead blocker. We call them running back and fullback, but the names are unimportant. What’s important is the formation in which they are employed and their functions in that formation. Don’t think of players in terms of position names. Think of them in terms of their roles. Csonka and Harris were feature backs, which made their role no different than LaDainian Tomlinson’s.

That goes for Jim Brown, too. Not listing him as a runningback in this vote is criminal.

Bo Jackson over Jim Brown? Jim Brown grouped with Emmit Smith? ...

I still don't understand...I'll assume you left out Jim Brown becasue you are going with the trend that he is a FB, but Bo Jackson on that list, as well as Emmit Smith? Good players, but certainly not better then Dickerson, Thurman Thomas, Earl Campbell, etc.

I'm stunned Centers hasn't been mentioned yet, he's the best receiving running back of all-time. I realize I left Motley off the list but I just had to include Centers becuase nobody has mentioned him yet.

Larry Centers ??? are you kidding me ?? he was desperate to handle the ball more..which is why he didn't stay in and help pass block and was able to rack up so many catches.
Alstott can run, catch and plow over defenders..he can also pass block.

"In his 14 NFL seasons, Centers rushed for 2,188 yards, caught 826 passes for 6,797 yards, returned 5 punts for 30 yards, returned 33 kickoffs for 617 yards. and scored 42 touchdowns(14 rushing and 28 receiving). His 826 receptions are currently the most by any non-wide receiver in NFL history. Because the NFL fullbacks are now almost exclusively used as blockers, Centers may be remembered as one of the last fullbacks ever to be used as a ball carrier and receiver on a regular basis."

TIE BREAKER RULES
Tie breakers for RB's/WR's/TE's
Avg (Rushing for RB's and Recievng for WR's) TD's a season. If both are within same # for example if LT is 11.5 and Emitt Smith is 11.6, then it is still a tie.

Next would be Avg. rushing or recieving yards a season.
