You don't have to play your safties like that in the cover 2. Just look at Archuleta.

Just a guess, but I think he'd look pretty good in a Chargers uniform... Failing that I think Carolina would be a good spot.

The Chargers are gonna pass on him. We need a safety that's good in coverage, not one that's a good run stuffer. Our run defense is fine. It's the other thing that could use some improving.

If Gaines Adams gets more sacks than Mark Anderson we might have the luxury and flexibility on defense to play our SS in the box more often. Right now we don't create enough pressure to take that risk, especially if Phillips is the guy with the pressure of covering a deep 1/2 from 7-9 yards away from the LOS.

Or John Lynch and Bob Sanders for that matter. A common element of all the effective Tampa 2 defenses recently has been a hard hitting SS that can play in the box against the run.

Well he is hard hitting and elevated the Colts the run defense once he got back on the field. The TFL against Cedric Benson in the Superbowl that forced a fumble is still fresh in my mind. Ill guess a Colts fan can elaborate how often he plays in the box.

He plays FS, but his responsibilities are more like a SS, with Bethea playing center-fielder. A lot of the time, the Colts don't even run cover two. They run a weakside cover three, with the FS (Sanders) playing close to the line of scrimmage.

Just because he is a hard hitter doesn't make him a strong safety. He plays FS and it's as simple as that.

Yeah but how often do you see the FS in the box? Not as much as the SS. It's a stupid argument, clearly everyone can see what the responsibilities are. Who cares what the position is called?

Donovan Darius is going to go to a Super Bowl Caliber team, personally I think San Diego would be a perfect fit for him. But as a Jags fan its a good move, he only played in 12 games the past 2 years. Sensabaugh is ready to come and start. I think Gattis will play good minutes though, he will be their utlilty DB. The only downside is Nelson doesnt have a solid vet to lean on because he gambles so much.

So is Weddle going to be playing CB, then? He would seem like the obvious choice for that "good in coverage" safety. I mean, the Chargers certainly gave up a lot for him, so I would expect he'll contribute early.

I'm kinda surprised, but it's a move I understand. There's an influx of talent at the position.
