Yeah, but you're not going to out EPL the EPL, so that can't be your plan. There's just not enough money in MLS to buy that many good players, especially since most prime aged players won't be chomping at the bit to play in the MLS the way the EPL can draw talent. They'd have to not just outspend the EPL, but outspend it significantly for multiple years, for that to work.

Most of the better American players play overseas even if they're not in the top tier league.

Also, I will say the MLS is slowly expanding and making more money. Soccer is slowly growing here but it's at a snails pace.

Good SI article about the way the german FA rebuilt our soccer infrastructure. I know the interest isn't there in the US to get anyone to shell out that kind of money to turn the US around, but a couple regional acadamies, as described in the article would pay off like gang busters for the USNT and the MLS.

EDIT: THat's not the article I thought it was, but it mentions the academies.

Klinsmann is trying to create that here Rose. It was actually one of the big disagreements between him and Gupta and why he wasn't initially hired.

Even just having the MLS teams each create an academy would be better than what we have now. It wouldn't be the nearly 200 the article cites, but even 20 would be greatly beneficial.

Why is Canada's team so unsuccessful? I was looking at it today and they've only made one World Cup. That surprised me. I thought they were better than that.

Jonathan de Guzman (Netherlands), Asmir Begović (Bosnia), Teal Bunbury (USA), Junior Hoilett (England), Hargreaves (England), Rochat (Switzerland) to name a few.

That sucks. Kind of like Giuseppe Rossi choosing to play for Italy instead of the United States.

Bunbury leaves no doubt about his intentions.

"I was born in Canada and I would love to play for the country I was born in. I think it would be an honour," Bunbury said.

"For me, I was born in Canada, I have a lot of family members there, and it would feel wrong for me to play for the U.S. I feel a connection with Canada."

That was back in 2010. I hate Bunbury since that day.

I know the New York Red Bulls have an academy. Juan Agudelo came up through the system. Hopefully he lives up to his potential because I think could be a big star for the US in the future.

Overrated so far because of two tap in goals.

I was thinking another way to keep high level home grown talent in the MLS is to make a rule that at least one of your team's three designated players has to be American (or Canadian for the Canadian teams).

But requiring one of the DPs to be a native would give MLS teams the ability to compete with foreign teams for the high level guys.

Klinsman's just the NT coach, he wouldn't have the power to establish something as complete as this.

And I don't think it's a bad thing having the best americans playing in stronger leagues. Focus on making the MLS a developmental league and let the guys that are too good for it move onto leagues where they can get that top level training, at least until the US academies are strong enough to produce world class players, all on their own.

You can thank Bruce Arena for that. If you have a uber talented player that is on the fence about playing for your national team, you make a roster spot for him and get him into a few games.

And I don't think it's a bad thing having the best americans playing in stronger leagues. Focus on making the MLS a developmental league and let the guys that are too good for it move onto leagues where they can get that top level training, at least until the US academies are strong enough to produce world class players, all on their own.
I agree with this. The good players will move onto Europe, where at this point they'll develop better than here even if we began to institute a legitimate youth training system. They'll get better, which will translate to their performance in the national team, which will lead to better results for the national team. This will increase youth involvement, which puts more kids in the system. Rinse repeat until the youth system has become and established and respected institution that constantly provides the national team with quality players.

Those players who don't go to Europe, who will be all but the top prospects, will make great candidates for signings to MLS teams, which won't have huge financial resources, similar to how that article posted earlier described German youth making headway in the German clubs when their finances collapsed. Even if these kids getting signed to MLS teams aren't the very top American prospects(they conceivably were signed to top European youth squads), they should still be an improvement over the Americans in the MLS today, benefiting from legitimate youth training, and not just high school coaching followed by college coaching. As the quality of the MLS improves, the top American prospects will have less incentive to make the jump to Europe, and as the youth training system becomes more entrenched, they'll receive increasingly equal training stateside.

It was a major deal with Gulati. He wants to oversee all of American soccer and what it establishes and so forth.

The Irish have given up a ton of goals simply because their goal keeper is short, fat, and unathletic. It's really sad to watch. Is that really the best the mother country has to offer?

Shay Given is a solid goalkeeper. Ireland's defense is awful and put him in some tough spots today.

Yea, the whole reason he wasn't hired the first time around was because they wouldn't give him that power. This time, he has complete say over the youth development for the US.

Now, he doesn't have the power to force MLS teams to establish development programs, but I would guess the USSF could force their hands and Klinsmann would definitely have input in that.
