They've been a mess since the end of the Copa. Sure Suarez and Cavani are an awesome duo, but the rest of that team is very mediocre or old&mediocre, and they've been playing like ****. I'd pick either Colombia or Japan over them for sure. Now they'll probably still make it out of their group cause England are the definition of mediocrity and FIFA will want to get 4 SA teams and Chile are unlikely to surpass Spain or the Dutch, but that doesn't mean they're the same team that went on that miracle run in 2010.

Uruguay aren't great, but I can't see England beating them in South America. Costa Rica will be a difficult game as well. I can't see us going through. We'll probably end up with 2 points.

I think Group B is the closest there is to a "Group of Death".

Group B definitely is the group of death. Defending champions, the team they beat in the finals, and Chile, probably the best team in Pot 2.

Australia is just so terrible though. Tough to call it a group of death with such a cupcake. There are lots of groups where 1 good to very good team gets left out.

Using Fifa's gawd-awful ratings...

Group A: Brazil; Croatia; Cameroon; Mexico
10+16+51+20=97

Group B: Spain; Chile; Netherlands; Australia
1+15+9+59=84

Group C: Colombia; Ivory Coast; Japan; Greece
4+17+48+12=81

Group D: Italy; Uruguay; England; Costa Rica
7+6+13+31=57

Group E: Switzerland; France; Ecuador; Honduras
8+19+23+41=91

Group F: Argentina; Nigeria; Bosnia; Iran
3+36+21+45=105

Group G: Germany; Portugal; Ghana; USA
2+5+14+24=45

Group H: Belgium; Russia; South Korea; Algeria
11+22+54+26=113

Group of Death: Group G (45 total ranks)

Group D was similarly screwed over at 57. A couple groups get their rating hurt by having a terribly ranked team like Australia or Japan. Either way while I like the "randomness" of the draw perhaps moving to a seeding region drawing system would be more effective.

Japan at 48 is a lovely example of how awful FIFA rankings are.

None of those ratings make a lick if sense. Brazil at 10? Shows how much the Euros hate them.

Absolutely. That's why I qualified it with "gawd-awful FIFA rankings". Out of everything Group B IMHO is the harshest. I mean everyone gets 3 free ones from the Koalas but the other three teams would be top 2 in pretty much every group. Super harsh.

Group D would be the same exact I don't rate England all that high even though I'm half Brit. *shrugs*

Chile would struggle in every group, doesn't mean they couldn't get out in other groups just that they wouldn't be clear cut to pass through even in group h.

And the Dutch aren't that good, they're very inexperienced and haven't beaten a good team since that miracle run in 2010.

People love the Swiss and it seems like they're just giving France an auto-pass, but Honduras is no joke and Ecudor could surprise. That's going to be a fun group to watch.

I think the group the USMNT drew is really interesting and seems like it was destined.

USA v. Ghana rematch. Klinsman v. Germany. And American soccer v. Everything Americans hate about foreign soccer (flopping, whining, possessing for the sake of possession, general disingenuous play, poor sportsmanship, and deviant shenanigans) when they play Portugal (not that Ghana doesn't do this ****, but Portugal is the most notorious for their "tactics"). If the USMNT advances, it'll be really special because of the teams they'll have had to overcome. I think fans can really get behind hating the teams they're playing against.

honduras is no joke to the almighty CONCACAF but they have no chance in brazil with their 43 fans.

I'm pretty sure I'm the only person who loves the swiss. I've seen more people picking Ecuador over the swiss than vice versa. But this swiss team is no joke. They've got a ton of versatile and experienced CMs (the napoli three and the BuLi's Schwegler, Lustenberger and Fernandez) behind a number of very exciting attacking talents (Shaqiri, Xhaka, Seferovic, Stoker, Mehmedi, Drmic, Kasami, and Zuber), one of the best FBs tandems in at the tournament (Lichtsteiner and Rodriguez, with Zeigler on the bench), one of the best young CBs at the tournament (Timm Klose's partner and Basel hot property, Fabian Schaer) and a top young GK with a quality veteran (Sommer and Benaglio).

But most important of all, they have the best coach in this tournament who's been teaching and shaping that young team who've racked up some big european experience in recent CL seasons.

I think they win their group and then top Bosnia/Nigeria before getting a big matchup with Portugal or Belgium. in the quarterfinals.

absolutely no doubt they advance out of their group but i think you overrate them. they got a great draw so your scenario is entirely possible.

The United States are not only in the group of death, but they have to play a game in the frickin Amazon. I looked up where they play, and their game against Portugal is in Manaus, a city in the middle of no where that requires a ferry to get to unless you fly. It's very far from the rest of the World Cup host cities.

Also looking at the other groups, I feel like group D is kind of like a mini Group of Death. One of England, Uruguay, and Italy isn't going to make it out which is a shame because all three are very good teams.
