Default Falcons cut Grady Jackson

By STEVE WYCHE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 10/23/07

Flowery Branch — The Falcons cut defensive lineman Grady Jackson Tuesday. Rookie Trey Lewis will move into the starting lineup.

Last season, he started all 16 games and helped them improve 17 spots in the NFL rankings from 26th in 2005 to ninth last season. He led the NFL in tackles for loss with 13 and was the only projected starter on the defensive line to play in all 16 games.

After last season, Jackson filed a lawsuit over the alleged release by Falcons officials of his medical records. A free agent at the time of the alleged release, Jackson contended that other teams shied away from signing him and he eventually came to contract terms with the Falcons for less than his market value.

I really dont understand this move guys.

I'm assuming he's just too out of shape.

I don't get this at all, and quite frankly I am enraged about it. What's the point of doing so now? Are they going to sign someone?

Just out of speculation maybe he was out of shape and they wanted to go with the younger guy in Trey Lewis who has suprised everybody this year with his play.So do guys think this push DT as a bigger need for us in the offseason?....If we had a chance to draft Dorsey do you guys think we would?

I don't like the Dorsey fit. He is an UT and Atlanta needs more of a NT.

I wouldn't be surprised if we signed him. This move has me scratching my head.

Nice. The Gmen can use a big NT for the time being. We need more muscle up front. Get on it Reese.

And boy, its starting to become at the very least possible that Alge's assertion that theyre weeding out the veterans and tanking the season may be in fact true.

Fair enough weeding out the vets if there playing worse than the young guys, ie Dunn Crumpler etc, but Grady!!! He has been the best Dlineman over the past two years. Crazy! There has to be more to it! If not, im starting to think GOD DAMN COLLEGE COACHES!

The only reason I could think of for this move is that he was on the verge of reaching some sort of incentive bonus and the coaches/front office didn't want to shell out money to a player who isn't in the long term plans of the team.

That makes sense. Espically considering no matter how great Grady plays we aren't going to win more than 3 games. Kind of a ***** move though.

Slightly puzzling, and it's not likely to help us much, but there are two explanations, one on-field and one off-field, and it might be a combination of both.

1. As Shiver said, Grady may be reaching some kind of incentive.

2. More importantly, he's not a long term option, and I think that this staff is already - quite rightly - looking to the future. Not tanking, but looking ahead, and evaluating.

Firstly, Trey Lewis has been very good this season. I think the team want to get him playing regularly at NT, to get him as much experience as possible, and to see how he holds up. I think they also like Montavious Stanley, and I suspect that they want to see whether he can be a reliable backup over the course of season. With Grady still there, Stanley wouldn't get suited up, and Trey would see less action.

The key is this. The staff will now have an extended look of how Lewis and Stanley hold up, as a 1-2 at NT, against NFL starters. If things go well - and the cutting of Grady shows a certain degree of faith in those two guys - then we have a young tandem at NT and we don't need to worry about it in the offseason. If they don't, we have a better idea of what we need to improve, whether in FA or the draft.

I was for sure...I wasn't aware that this would be THIS rough of a transition for the offensive line.
