What's this I hear about New Orleans trading Okafor and Ariza for Lewis and the #46 pick? How on Earth did they convince Washington to give up such a nice expiring contract for those two without including #10?

I hate that trade. I would have liked it w/ the 10th overall pick but w/o it this trade is terrible. So say we get Bradley Beal at #3. Wall/Beal/Ariza/Okafur/Nene is the 10th seed if Beal can get us 18+ a game. There goes out cap space in the near future.

When NO buys out Lewis, this is going to be the steal of the year. They got out of both their problem contracts while keeping the tenth pick. They'll be able to move forward with Gordon, Davis, the tenth pick and a shitton of cap space. It's unfair.

seriously if we got the 10th then I would understand this trade. Get MKG at #3 and Lamb at #10. But this kills our future cap space, and takes away minutes from our young bigs Vesley/Seraphin/Booker. Terrible trade

I guess the plan is to be the 10th seed in the east at best this upcoming year and then pray to god that some team has an unhappy superstar and is willing to trade him for Ariz and Okafur expiring deal.

The Wiz definitely think that Wall making the playoffs as an 8-seed would be good for his development or something.
With MKG, Ariza, Okafor, Nene, Crawford, and Vesley, they must think Wall has enough to get them to the playoffs.
As for NOH, after everyone yelled at Stern, look at the shape the roster is in instead of having Gasol or whoever was in that first bad CP3 deal.
What big-time FAs will be available the next two summers? Eric Gordon, #10, and Anthony Davis has to be pretty enticing for any youngish FAs.

I'm not really smart with the whole buy out state in basketball. What does it do? How do you do it? What's the purpose? Do you still pay the guy?

Someone can correct me if i'm wrong, but you can pay out the money and clear that cap space and roster spot. The guy gets most if not all the money he is owed, he is released and his salary will come off the books. It's huge in the NBA because you can't make a trade unless you have extra cap space, or the salaries being moved are within 10% of each other.

Does Deron Williams seriously consider New Orleans now with all that cap space plus Eric Gordon, Anthony Davis and another piece at #10?

It doesn't necessarily clear the cap space, it just minimizes it if the guy is willing to take less money to be bought out.

Right, but does it not clear from the salary cap once it is paid out?

It extends to the length of the contract, and payments are determined based on that.

From SI's Zach Lowe: I've got NOH '13 payroll, assuming Shard buyout, at about $46.5M w/ Gordon cap hold. Not enough for max offer to D-Will, unless I'm off.
Pretty sure D-Will would want a max deal. The Hornets could still move forward by offering Goran Dragic and Gerald Wallace. That would leave re-signing Eric Gordon and, possibly, Carl Landry and/or Chris Kaman.
If that happens, could be a starting line-up of:
PG - Dragic
SG - Gordon
SF - Wallace
PF - Davis
C - Kaman
or move Davis to the 5 and start Landry at the 4.

Good trade for the Wizards. Won't win them a championship, but it'll make them competitive right away. I really like the size they have in the post. The Thunder and Heat are killing each other by allowing too many points being scored on drives to the hoop. With Nene and Okafor, they would be forced to take more jump shots... and Ariza is a good perimeter defender.
I want the Magic to scrap their dumb 4 out, 1 in philosophy and add another towering defender in the post who would compliment Dwight as opposed to a flimsy 3 point shooter who sucks if his shot isn't falling.
Magic hired a new GM btw. Rob Hennigan. My #1 wish for the job. I feared it was going to be Jeff Bower. That would've been a nightmare.

WHAT?!?! This is such a bad trade for Washington, it's laughable. They're giving up 20 million in cap relief for 20 million in terrible contracts. and they didn't even get the 10th pick out of it! this was an absolute coup for NO. they just got enough cap room to build a great core around Davis, Gordon, and the 10th.
Also, the reason Miami is killing OKC at the hoop is because Miami is playing a lineup with a PG, SG, 2 SF's, and an athletic PF. It completely spreads out OKC's defense and takes any defensive presence out of the lane. You can keep Ibaka or Perkins in the lane, but then you're leaving Bosh to hit a mid-range jumper or Chalmers/Battier open for a 3. The same thing cripples Miami defensively, to some degree.

The only way they'll win is if they use their small lineup. Durant can't guard LeBron on his own. It's his weakness, which is why they need Sefolosha in. Bosh taking mid-range jumpers is what you want. He's not going to make them all. The open 3's are mostly just mental lapses.

I agree - they need to match Miami's small lineup. something that, in the first three games, they completely neglected. they finally adjusted last night, only to see James Harden completely **** the bed with Sefolosha on the bench.

Really pissed the C's didn't jump on that Hornets trade. They have the cap room and Okafor/Ariza are players they could use.
For Washington, it's a great trade. They just need to get a couple guys that can score, but they got two guys that they can use and now have two top ten picks. It doesn't hurt them much at all cap-wise. They actually freed up some space for this year and can probably flip one or both players at the deadline if they need to.
For the Celtics, it would have given them a good enough roster to get back to the playoffs with Rondo, Pierce, Bradley, Ariza, Okafor and $9m+ cap space and 3 first round picks to work with as they transition to a team built around Rondo. Ainge is a 'tard for not jumping on that one because they're not going to sniff a Top 10 pick again for at least a few years.
