How is ATL going to give them cap relief and then still be able to afford Paul?
...and that's assuming Paul is willing to give up all those millions to join them.

because ATL is presumably going to have one contract on the books for next season - Al Horford at $12,000,000. Mid-season, trade Horford and whatever expiring deals they have now, and 1st round picks for, let's say, Howard+J. Richardson+Duhon+Q. Richardson ($31,213,385 combined in 2013). assuming, in this scenario, they've signed only one-year deals this off-season, that will put them at that number for this off-season. they have Josh Smith's bird rights, so they can go over the cap to sign him. sign Chris Paul with the 26.7 million they will have in cap space, that puts them at about 10 million in remaining space (if they sign&trade for Paul the way Cleveland and Miami did LeBron). either convince Smoove to take about that much his first season or go over the cap using his bird rights.
I don't understand the cap very well, so it's highly possible there is a logistical issue where they wouldn't be allowed to do what I laid out with Paul/Smith.

Pacers have agreed to a 1 year deal with DJ Augustin, according to a source.

Unless he's changed a lot in the past two years Shved isn't a SG either, as he was much more of a huge PG.

Yeah, in order to keep Josh Smith's bird rights, they will be charged a cap hold on him which will be around the same salary that he earns this year. If they renounce him, then they will lose his Bird Rights and then his cap hold would be released. They could still afford to bring him back, but now they can't go over the cap in order to do it, which would kill any possibility of a Paul, Smith, Howard union.

I am excited about the hawks future more then usual bc in his first week of being GM Danny Ferry got rid of the contracts of Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams.

He can play SG on the offensive end.
But I think he'll struggle defending the opposing SGs.

what if they sign Dwight to an extension in which his 1st year salary is in the $15mil range? that, in combination with the four contracts I listed and Smith's cap hold, would total somewhere near $40.2mil. let's say they sign Smith to a max deal, which only shaves about $2-3mil off of their cap space because of his cap hold. that would bring them to a total of $43-44mil. depending on the contracts they signed Dwight and Smith to, they would have just enough to give Paul a max deal, no?

Ferry did this before... He dumped Larry Hughes' massive contract when he got there, which brought back Ben Wallace, Joe Smith, Wally Szczerbiak and Delonte West.
The thing about Ferry that you have to fear is how terrible he is at rewarding new contracts. Just off the top of my head... Anderson Varejao, Mo Williams, and Luke Walton....scary. Don't recall him ever drafting well... Jawad Williams anyone? Actually JJ Hickson might be his best draft pick. His biggest failure is probably not being able to surround Lebron with enough talent to win the title and keep him around. But who knows... maybe Lebron was going to leave regardless. Hard to blame Ferry completely, I guess.

Any extension Dwight signs will not be anything less than the max. Hovering around $20M.
But you were saying something about ATL giving ORL cap relief? Well, that's more bad contracts to swallow.

I still have hope because Mike Woodson's cluelessness didn't prevent everyone from playing well for the week or two we had a healthy Lin, Melo and Stat under him, but god damn it has every sport bummed me out since the Giants won the Superbowl. The Avalanche missed a playoff spot in the last week of the season, a spot that went to the eventual Stanley Cup Winners. Then the NBA just decided to hate me in the playoffs. And Germany **** the bed against Italy, letting Spain get their record breaking third consecutive major tournament title. I never thought I'd feel this disappointed in Sports in a year where the Giants won the Superbowl.

I don't understand how you can love Mike D who was an awful coach, then go and hate on Mike Brown.
Who cares about offensive X and Os. It's extremely overrated in basketball. Good players can score. Throw them on the court and you'll score points.
It's defense that wins championships, and the great coaches all preach great team defense. Defensive adjustments is what you look for in a quality coach. Not offense. Who cares about offense. If your players suck, you're not gonna score. Period.
We have scorers. I'm not concerned about offense at all.

Varejao and Mo Williams make a fair amount of money.

How do the Nets possibly have any cap space to get a claim in on him?

also means that Houston is surprisingly okay with a no extension Dwight. saw Brooklyn and Charlotte are back in Humphries talks now, as well.
to the post above me: think they still have their MLE
Adrian Wojnarowski @WojYahooNBA
The Mavericks will be aggressive bidders for Scola on the amnesty wire, league sources said. Dallas is serious about Elton Brand too.

hell if i know. we've been rumored to want brand. and jamison. and any power forward with a pulse not named Humphries. We'll find a way apparently.
But as sbh said, we're looking to deal Hump to the Bobcats. probably for a trade exemption or something of the sort

Throw in Kevin Martin, picks and cap space... Are you kidding me??? LET'S DO THIS!!!

What were they waiting for so long though? They were always too good for the lottery, not good enough to even make the conference finals. They had some good players to move around and try to find a formula that works. I just don't see what the hold up was, status quo wasn't doing them any good for a number of years.
