Worst staff ever. Who cares that they drafted KD, Russ, Harden, Ibaka, Reggie Jackson and traded for Sefolosha.

Drafting KD was pretty much the easiest decision of all time, so not sure you're point there. The others sure, but they also kept Perkins on for this year despite all evidence pointing to him being completely worthless.

There are moves that are influenced by money and long-term mentality. Perkins was kept on because they felt like he could be a valuable piece for them in the playoffs when they went up against bigger teams. He was completely worthless so it's pretty much a done deal that he's gone this offseason. They deserve the **** they get for the Harden trade but we also don't know what kind of pressure was being applied to the FO, either. From a talent acquisition standpoint they're one of the best in the NBA. They've been drafting really well for years, which is a lot more than 90% of FO's in the NBA can say.

And if I'm not mistaken, had they amnestied Perkins they would've been able to afford Harden this year without even having to pay the luxury tax.

The funny thing is had Westbrook not gotten his knee wacked out, they'd still be going back to the finals like last year.
Everyone now just saw how great Westbrook was, by missing him. He had some skeptics before, I don't think many left now.

Based on what? Memphis' defense suffocated them.

Memphis could have very well beaten them, but not in 5 games while making it look so easy.

Westbrook being able to space the floor, and obviously a better driver than Jackson/Fisher would have presented more problems making the defense look less suffocating.

Memphis still could have won though.

That's ridiculous. They had to trade Harden. They're a small market team that can't afford to operate very high over the luxury tax threshold.

The moves Sam Presti made to put that team in the position they've been in is just impressive. Moving two top-flight NBA players in Rashard Lewis and Ray Allen were pretty bold moves. He cleaned up their cap situation and has made smart cap-based decisions for the last 6 years. He is amazing at evaluating the draft and frequently picks up multiple picks and makes the best of them rather than overpaying veteran free agents to sit on the bench. They never have a bad contract on the cap.

If there's someone on his staff that comes with his cap talent and team building philosophy, any team looking for a better GM should interview and likely hire that person.

Don't misconstrue this to mean I don't respect Presti, but they absolutely did not have to trade Harden. That argument has been thoroughly discredited in numerous places. Even if they wanted to avoid the luxury tax, amnestying Perkins would've bought them this year and if they chose to sign Harden instead of Ibaka, they could've kept their big 3 together.

Perkins had a really bad year and isn't the defensive force they traded for since he dropped weight. I'd agree that that is probably a bad contract. Not sure you amnesty him, though. He's still a valuable player (although overpaid) in a bigs rotation and it's better to have him on your team than let him go to a rival.

But there's absolutely no way they could get away with dumping Perkins AND Ibaka (or even just Ibaka). They were really just looking to replace Harden's production with Kevin Martin and while he wasn't quite there, it was close and even better in some ways - I think they got what they expected and that part of it was good for the Thunder. The entirety of the trade is very much wait and see. The Thunder got Jeremy Lamb and 2 first round draft picks out of that trade (one of which they might not receive until 2018). In the long-run, Presti made the right move while doing a nice job of patching the short-term impact.

I couldn't disagree more (especially with the rubbish regarding Perkins), but I'm not getting into this again.

How is Perkins still a valuable player? What exactly does he do?

There is no doubt about it, they chose Ibaka over Harden.

If they kept Harden, they wouldn't have any future cap flexibility because their entire cap would be tied up in 3 guys and they might not have been able to sign Ibaka, who is way more vital to them winning a championship than Harden.

Amnestying Perkins would have just been cutting a starter just to cut him. Makes no sense. They weren't going to add anything by getting rid of him and they obviously value him greatly as he started 78 games in the regular season. I anticipate they'll amnesty him this off-season as they'll have some options with Toronto's draft pick.

Collison is better than Perkins.

Ask whoever started him 78 games? He's been a dominant post defender in the past.

Tracy McGrady was a great player in the past, so let's give him $8 million and pretend he's valuable. Scott Brooks is a garbage coach, I wouldn't judge that.
