The only competent GMs in the league are Morey, Presti, and Pritchard. And it's been that way for awhile.

if the Suns training staff actually red flagged Noel then I approve of all of McDonough's moves so far

You put the guy who traded Harden for peanuts on the list, your list is invalid. The Sixers got more for Jrue Holiday.

And I do like what McDonnough's done so far this off-season. We'll see what happens when he actually has to sign a guy, though.

This doesn't really tie them up financially. Calling Chris Grant 'so bad' with cap space when he's spent a grand total of like 8 million in 3 years or so isn't really saying anything. They want to fill out bench players and they're doing it. They know they aren't going to attract Bynum and they weren't going to offer Josh Smith anything. So I'm not really sure what else they were going to do with the money besides maybe throw an offer sheet at Pek even though Saunders has made it clear they're going to retain him.

Besides, the fourth year is a team option.

just wondering who is the Harris involved in this
Quote:
With Calderon and Harris in the mix, Mavs have about $7.5M of cap space. Several ways to increase that figure

Presti had to trade him, and the return on investment is still very much incomplete. Getting a guy that they projected to replace Harden's minutes, the guy that would replace him in the coming years, a lottery pick, and another future pick for a guy you absolutely had to trade isn't that bad. Sam Presti getting draft picks is way more valuable than your typical draft pick trade.

OKC can't afford to pay the luxury tax. That market can't sustain a team that a) isn't winning or b) has a high payroll. Presti is always having to make moves for the future because of these factors.

And the only reason Pritchard got canned is because he drafted Oden over Durant and the team started having serious injury problems. He built a young roster with a favorable cap situation that was able to compete. Oden was a bad gamble and Roy lost his knees. They never would have fallen to where they stand now if they'd kept Pritchard, who's put together a very familiar situation in Indiana. The one criticism I have of Pritchard is that he never pulled the trigger on a big move to take his team over the top.

Pritchard is fine, he's just not elite or anything. He's a terrible drafter with the Pacers so far. And why is Dallas signing all these goddamn point guards when they just drafted Larkin?

I wasn't meaning to direct that directly at that move as it's not super horrible, but it's worse than what the Celtics gave Courtney Lee and Jason Terry. And they're overvaluing Jack's shooting in Golden State. He's not going to shoot like that ever again. Golden State is notorious for boosting FG% and 3P%.

There are free agents that will sign for the vet minimum who will bring just as much to the table from a backup role as Jack.

If Presti hadn't overpaid for Ibaka, they never would have needed to trade Harden. And I'm all for analytics, but Morey isn't special. Jeremy Lin is still their starting PG, and he took advantage of 2 fools; Presti and Howard.

Pat Riley should at least get an honorable mention. Those championships aren't all that. He's good, but he's no Kevin Pritchard. /sarcasm.

Yeah, that $85m payroll is something else...Pat Riley's a mastermind.

With Durant and Westbrook, Ibaka (while overpaid) is more important to winning for OKC than James Harden.

Jesus....wtf is with all these PG's? I really like Shane Larkin too but I don't have any clue what is going on anymore. Isn't Billups available? I just wanted a stop gap, not all these long ass contracts.

edit: Only way this makes sense is if he plays SG, but even then, blah.

Every single contract the Heat have through 2015 has an option attached, and players are willing to take less money to play for them.

You're delusional.

It's hilarious that so many GM's are free spenders with fully guaranteed contracts. We see every year teams dumping terrible contracts of guys in their 30's yet every off-season we see it happen again.

I'm just going to pretend that Cuban has some sort of plan. I guess at the very least we have 3 competent point guards now, aside from none from last year.

You're delusional.
I'll give Riley credit for having an empty cap a couple years ago. But every other part of that team is only because LeBron-Bosh-Wade are there. Of course frontrunners and ring chasers sign for cheaper.

Riley could never do well in a smaller market or with a team that didn't give him a blank check for the payroll.

Except Norris Cole, all of the options through 2015-16 are PLAYER options ($66m worth for 3 players). How is that a credit for Riley? In what world? They're on the hook for $77m for 7 players next year.

None of their PG's are which they drafted, Haslem was there already, and majority of the rest of the guys what did you expect? It's not like it's anything new that vets sign with championship caliber teams, and when you have 3 max contracts you have to get creative with your signings. Without early 1st round picks or cap space that's basically the only way those teams can improve their roster.

Except Norris Cole, all of the options through 2015-16 are PLAYER options ($66m worth for 3 players). How is that a credit for Riley? In what world? They're on the hook for $77m for 7 players next year.
Would LeBron and Bosh had gone there if Jim Buss was the GM instead? It takes more than just the possibility of a ring to get a player to take less money. Juwan Howard is definitely just a ring chaser, but Allen and Battier meant more to the team than just that.

It was also his decision to pick Spoelstra and stick with him.

EDIT: Doesn't mean it's all guaranteed. You don't think LeBron's going to test the FA market? And who knows what'll happen to Bosh and Wade.

Collison was somewhere between average and solid.

That said I was more then ok with picking up his team option after we drafted Larkin.
