Default If the Falcons get Ryan do we switch to 3-4?

If so...does our draft dramatically change? Do we make Gholston or Long our top pick? I mean I know we just got Jamaal but how sweet would it be to have him and Long lined up next to each other with Abe as our 3-4 rush backer...or would it be better to have Abe down with Gholston rushing? Or do we ignore it all together and rebuild offense? Jake Long...Michael Oher...Ryan Clady...

If we swap to the 3-4 it would mess everything up on our defense...Boley could also be the rush backer...but then we need another middle a nose tackle and we really don't have the personnel to make the scheme work how it was intended...but we could use aspects of it to improve our team overall...as a way to mix our defense and mix up the fronts and coverages.

I just don't even know what to think right now without a coach in place...the GM made it seem like we could be going to address the QB position earlier than some of us are expecting...and I don't mean through the draft...

If we do hire Rex Ryan we will not switch to a 3-4 next year and Im guessing that we may stay in a 4-3 system because Ryan has experience in the 4-3 and there is a strong possibillity that he may bring his twin brother in to be the DC who currently runs the 4-3.

Ryan would mean a hybrid. we have guys who can be 3-4 DE's as is in Coleman, Babineaux, Lewis and Anderson. we have a possible NT in Lewis, but it's our biggest need. OLB if we got Gholston could be spectacualr with Gholston and Abe outside and Brooking And Boley inside.

First thing I would like to mention is it is not just if we hire Ryan. Garrett will bring in a 3-4 staff if he is hired. Those two guys are the only coaches, to what has been reported, to have 2nd interviews. I imagine it will be one or the other.

The only players who would not work in a 3-4 are Rod Coleman and Jonathan Babineaux. They are both textbook 3-technique tackles, and they would be too short and too small to play down lineman in a 3-4 scheme. According to the ideal:

3-4 DE - 6'5" 290-310 lbs. (Jamaal Anderson?)
3-4 NT - 6'2" 310-330 lbs. (Trey Lewis)

At linebacker the team would be fine. John Abraham has played 3-4 OLB before, and has played in hybrid 3-4/4-3 schemes. Michael Boley is extremely versatile and could play outside or inside. All that is missing is a SILB who would be a 250-lbs. thumper.

Coleman has been a 3-4 RE before and I could see Babineaux able to play the role since he was a DE in college.

But when the Raiders tried to run a 3-4 it was a disaster specifically because their personnel didn't fit. They tried to put 3-tech tackles like Coleman and Sapp at 5-tech and it failed miserably. When you line up at 5-tech you need to have long arms so you combat the OT you line directly against. I think Coleman and Babineaux would not work very well there.

The Falcons have solid personnel to run a 3-4. Anderson is getting pretty pudgy so that would suit his new playing style. He must be getting close to 290 if he's not there already. They could draft a guy like Tommy Blake later in the draft because of his "character issues" to start at OLB opposite Abraham. Boley & Brooking would play inside along with a veteran FA with more size. They could sign a 3-4 DE as a temporary solution and draft one in Rounds 3-5 (Kendall Langford, Keilen Dykes). That defensive system would also benefit Chris Houston, who has the physical nature to complement an attacking defense. Hall could play in any scheme, and Jimmy Williams has the size to provide solid depth.

If we move to the 3-4, I want Gholston. I think Boley can be alot like Adailus Thomas in the middle of the 3-4. Having a pass rush like Gholston and Abraham would be so incredible. It would also help Abe out with his injuries I presume.

There are quite a lot of nice thumping mikes in this draft, and a lot of weaksiders - one of whom we might draft, like Timmons for the Steelers.

If we go 3-4, I think Coleman is a goner - but Babineaux is worth keeping around; he might be able to make it work.

The big problem: a NT. What about that Atiyah guy?

im not too sure but isnt one of the reasons abe wanted out of jets was because they were gonna run a 3-4?

No. That's often mentioned, but it's just not true.

The reason he wanted out of the Jets was the fact that they had refused to give him a long-term with serious guaranteed money. What every player, especially slightly injury prone, wants is guaranteed money. The Jets wouldn't give it to him. That's why he wanted to leave.

If we get Ryan, I'm hoping he can beat some sense into Jimmy Williams and get him on the field. It would give Ryan a lot more options if we had JW performing to his potential at FS. The 46 might become a feasible option with someone with JW's range at FS.

I have to agree...I honestly believe that Williams was planned to be on the field for the 2nd half of the season but when Crocker decided to actually play well this season it left him with no spot.

Crocker is a FA...we don't know if he'll even be on the team...and Milloy is still here...you don't bump him til he's ready, he's been playing lights out even at his age...you also have Stone behind Milloy who was very impressive when he came into the game against Arizona.

Rex Ryan runs an 'Organized Chaos' defense with tons of different line ups and people hands up hands down zone blitzing etc etc. It would not be a pure 3-4.

Honestly Babineaux would probably be given a shot at the SILB position. Out of college he ran in the 4.7s and that is in the mid 280s. He is an excellent athlete who could blitz effectively. I do not think it would be a big challenge to drop 10 pounds. Out of college he was extremely versatile and I doubt we would outright cut him or not have him a role.

really your three down guys are just massive bodies taking on double blocks and holding to the point and letting the lbs get the sack. they should be really good run stuffers. Ryan runs a hybrid in Baltimore, so he probably would do the same for ATL, make a gradual change not drastic, take veristile players like Gohlston.

That would be killer.

I'd love that defense so much. I'd try and pick up Kendall Langford out of Hampton who Scott has at 6'6 295.

The picture Bama drew is pretty nice.

This idea doesnt seem half bad. I dont know what we would do with Coleman and Babs, but whatever. We would just have to find a big space taking DE in the FA market, and our LB core would be just sick.

Babs wouldn't do well at that position...there's just no way for him to pull that off. He's a DT / DE not superman. He and Coleman while they are 'too short' according to you and according to ideal doesn't mean they don't play with enough leverage to hold the point of attack. They'd be our solution for that position for this year at least.
