Default Gibril Wilson

If I'm correct, he's set to be a UFA this March. Does it look like he's set to be a lock for you guys to resign or no?

I know BBD has said that he's miscast as a free safety, and I really like the idea of teaming him up with Reggie Nelson. What are his strengths and weaknesses?

Thanks guys.

I love Gibril, and he's started to grow on BBD. At FS, his instincts take over and I feel he's a better player there. at SS, he tends to over think things, which is one of his main weaknesses. He has good hands and is a great run stuffer at the line and blitzer, but doesn't cover TE's well in man to man.

You are correct, he's set to be a UFA, but #10, who's been right on nearly everything, said Reese(our GM) top 2 things to do were extend Tuck(done) and resign Gibril.

I'd say it looks like an 85% chance he stays here...I have a buddy inside the organization that said the team's #1 and #2 priorities this offseason were to sign tuck to a 4-5 year extension (just happened) and get Gibril re-signed before he hits the open market.

We have plenty of money to spend and our GM wants to spend in-house before anything else. The only way I see him hitting the open market is if he thinks he should get a 6 year-$30 million type contract which is one tier lower than Sanders. I love him but I wouldn't pay him more than $4 million a year personally.

He really has come into his own this year, showing the flashes that he showed his rookie year a lot more consistently.

I think with a better SS next to him he would be a lot better as well.

Yeah, I admit, I was wrong about Gibril. I thought he was a one year wonder, I underestimated how Tim Lewis damaged his growth. He's a very good player, and I absolutely want him back next year.

I think he's a better FS than SS though. He lacks the range of the prototypical safety, but he makes plays. And at SS, he's supposedly not the best in man coverage with the TE, and tends to overthink things and not let his natural ability shine. Which is odd, because prior to the season i felt that he lacked the range to play FS, and would not play well. But I was wrong, he's been great.

But then again, who knows. That couldve been more Tim Lewis damage. Maybe under Spags, he can play SS even better. Either way, I'll be very upset if the Giants don't resign him.

The fool took a wrong angle on the driver TD. At first it was perfect and then cut it in too much, and Driver ran by him. Christ, he is an above avg player, but if we can upgrade I wouldn't hesitate.

Im going to have to disagree with you on this one. That was not Wilson's fault. It was totally Butler's fault. He's so slow, that Wilson ran from the other side of the field against a streaking WR and ran past Butler. Also, Corey Webster got thrown to the floor (thrown to the floor!) and got up and ran past Butler. Corey Webster did that. He's not exactly a burner btw. So that tells you how slow Butler is.

He was in position to stop that from being a touchdown all the way, and was so slow, he got out ran by everyone even remotely close to him. He is by far the worst safety in the league. I can't stand him. I put that TD 100% on Butler, no one else.

He's awful. Its like we're playing with 10 guys on defense when he's on the field. I can't stand him.

Exactly. Wilson ran from the otherside and took a ****** angle when he was nearing driver. Watch the play again. If he stays on the path he pushes Driver out of bounds.

I am sure Butler was playing high stafety on top. But they said Brett pump faked. If he did that would make Butler step in, which would allow him to go deep.

No that's not all on Butler because 2 other players were close by. So it's not all on Butler, even though I agree we need an upgrade.

I look at it this way, had Wilson made that tackle, it wouldve been an incredible play on his part. To me, the prime culprit was Butler. He just sucks so bad. Maybe its because Wilson has exceeded my expectations this year, but Im not going to kill him. He's played well all season. If we had a credible safety next to him he'd even play better. We can't send him on the blitz or play in the box because Butler is so awful.

I think the incredible part would be making it there, but that play wouldn't have been nothing special. It would have been a typical pursuit where you take a good angle and hit the guy out of bounds. But watch towards the end he cuts the angle, and Driver runs by him. I would bet in review, the secondary coach and Spags would point that out. I know our coaches would. If he sticks the same angle he makes that play no problem.

I still think we need that sicks safety. One thing I like about Butler is his height. Maybe he needs a year in this system. People complain too much. Webster so called sucked, and now has progressed, as well as Eli. Sometimes you just need time. In Reese I trust.

Well, Michael Johnson is growing on me. I like his potential. But Butler is just waaaaay too slow. He has no chance. Regardless of what happens, Im definately not going to question Reese this offseason. The man knows what he's doing, so if we don't get a safety, chances are he has a lot of faith in Johnson developing.

And height isn't necessarily a good thing for safeties. Being too tall is a detriment. They don't have that knee bend and fast twich to change directions the way shorter guys do. And safeties have to have a fast first step.

Well the hips are important as well. Knee bend is one thing, but you have to have good footwork and fluid hips. But hopefully he progresses! I do like Johnson, maybe he is a year away.
