Mike Neal and Morgan Burnett both could've been good, but injuries and being played out of position has slowed down their progress. In 2011 we just neglected our defense. 2012 has potential, but the Nick Perry injury was another set back.

It's nice to look at where our defense could be, but that's a long way away from where it has actually been in the last two years.
I think Hayward is a excellent play maker on the Def

Hayward will be awesome once he gets a bigger role on the defense.

Hayward's role will expand when he steps in as a starter, likely next year, but as the nickel corner, covering the slot, he already has a significant part in the defense, and he excelled there as a rookie.

Ranking the quality of our defensive players (1-12 since Hayward isn't part of the base defense) gives an idea of what we have/or don't have

1. Clay Matthews
2. Casey Hayward
3. Sam Shields
4. BJ Raji
5. Morgan Burnett
6. Brad Jones
7. Ryan Pickett
8. Tramon Williams
9. Nick Perry
10. AJ Hawk
11. Datone Jones (rookie so can't rate much higher)
12. Jerron McMillian

I think it says a lot if Brad Jones is our sixth best player on defense...Perry and Jones hopefully have nice seasons and move their way to the top half of the list

If there's blame to go around for the debacles vs San Francisco and Arizona 3 seasons prior, here's how I'll place it: Let me see each of yours.

Capers 50%
Thompson 25%
Players 10%
Bad Luck (Injuries) 15%

I think Thompson has given Capers as much talent as some regular average NFL defenses, some of whom shut down the Niners better.
We saw what the Saints Gregg Williams defense did to Warner after he shredded us. They didn't have more pure talent IMO.

Kaepernick didn't torch the Rams or Seattle like he did us.
Are all their players better?
I don't think so.

Now it's true, we've lost studs (potential, high picks) like Perry, Collins, Bishop, Neal. That's the bad luck. I don't see the Niners last year dealing with any significant injuries on their defense like we often seem to.

But I also don't see Thompson bringing in veteran stopgaps.... for instance this year, we are reading about our lack of depth, certainty at safety.
Someone, Dougherty, Vandermouse, McGinn mentioned about 4 or 5 safeties out there who got not too much money that would have -seemingly- been upgrades over McMillian and MD Jennings.

But maybe our young guys are ready, we'll see.

Letting Cullen Jenkins go hurt the 2011 & 2012 defense. Those gambles are on Ted, and you have to admit that.

Cullen was bad move, but Collins was bullschit bad luck.

Still, I've seen many less talented defenses perform a helluva lot better than Capers' defenses did in Arizona and San Francisco.

He's gotta up his game.

You're beyond deluded if you think the players were only 10% responsible for those losses. Could very well be the dumbest thing i've ever read on this forum.

Packers placed OT Derek Sherrod (tibia, fibula) on active/PUP.

So you think, against Arizona and San Fran, that they just missed a lot of tackles, and missed assignments/looks that they had been taught that week of practice?

You must think these guys are horseschit players......and bad draft picks.

They were unprepared as hell against Warner's attack and against Kaepernick's legs.

Why were they unprepared?
You can say they are dumb or lazy to study.
I subscribe to more fault for the coaching that week of practice.

Thompson didn't make many personnel changes, with only Woodson being sent away from the team that put Kaepernick's legs into the playoff Hall of Fame.
He must not think those players are too bad.
But he also didn't fire Capers either...... but he did make the coaching staff go and learn from some college coaches who had experience defending it..... that says something right there IMO.

Casey Hayward suffered a hamstring injury this morning and will miss at least a couple weeks

Still haven't heard what the scoop is.

Hayward a hamstring already? Nice.......

Just get him back 100% by preseason game 3 & 4, ready for SF.
Maybe Shields and House take advantage of that.... we're deep there at CB right now.

Micah Hyde was the standout guy this morning in practice.

I'm not a fan of hamstring injuries because they always seem to linger. Glad to hear Hyde had a good start...experienced player from a defensive scheme and college that have produced many players in the NFL

Hayward wasnt' hurt this morning. Sounds like he hurt it during his workouts while he was away from GB at some point, so it had to be a pretty good hammy strain/pull if he's still a good 2 weeks away from returning. Looking at his twitter feed, looks like he got hurt some time within the last 5-6 days as he was tweeting "minor setback for a major come up" 3 days ago

good thing camp just started today and there's plenty of time before the season starts

Some catastrophic injuries today and the past couple days, thankfully none of our guys.

Although both the rookie late round WRs for us got some types of injuries today and couldn't finish practice.

Charles Johnson can't stay healthy at all..... his days are numbered.

SUNDAY

Today is the Packers first padded practice of the season.

Here are their non participants: WR Cunningham, WR Dorsey, WR Johnson, RB Harris, S Richardson, CB Hayward, CB House, Powell, OL Tretter, OT Sherrod, DL Neal and Worthy.

Let's just pray (or keep your fingers crossed) that we get no news like what came outta Baltimore and Philly yesterday.

It's great to see a guy who likes to hit but it's frustrating for a coaching staff if a player fails to listen.

Oh he listened.
He just craved the contact and ignored what he heard.
But he listened.

Datone looks great.
Keep that guy healthy and let him at Kaepernick in 6 weeks from today please!

Same difference.

There's no point in listening if you're just going to ignore what they're saying. And there's nothing honourable about a guy going full contact when no one else is expecting it.

I understand the concern for player safety. There is that edge you can't teach though while a player can be taught to practice under control.

But going full contact against guys that aren't doing the same doesn't prove anything. He likes to hit people that aren't expecting it? So what? Anyone could do that.

It'll mean something if he actually does it when he's meant to. Right now it just shows that he chooses not to listen.

As a football coach, I see similar things to this every year and while the player thinks they're impressing the coaches, it's something that becomes frustrating and sets the tone for a negative feel towards the player. There's nothing honorable about knocking a guy down in a drill that doesn't dictate it.

....true.
But our defense HAS been soft lately, and some would say the soft way they practice had something to do with that.

Not sure what % that is true or not, just worth mentioning.

And despite our recent soft practice nature the past few years, we still ended up getting more injuries in games and practices than most teams.

Maybe we need to toughen up, not sure.

But I like a little nastiness from my defense, to be honest with you.
Mike Daniels & Johnny Jolly were just praising it. So was Lattimore.

Monday afternoon:
Packers Sign WR Omarius Hines, S Chris Banjo; Cut S Ryan McMahon
Hines will wear Hurnung's #5.... until he's cut.

“He (Coach Mac) said something after practice. It didn’t sound like he was too upset with us,” Lang said. “I think that’s just what you’ve got to expect the first day of pads when you’ve got 90 guys out there competing for a few spots. That stuff’s going to happen, guys are going to get hit and we just have to make sure that we’re taking care of our guys.

“You love the physicality, you love the toughness, but at the same time you don’t want to be tackling guys or pushing guys down. That could cause other injuries if a guy falls in to somebody else’s legs. I’m sure we’ll look at it tonight as a group and try to get it fixed and come back out on the field on Tuesday.”

#Packers coach Mike McCarthy said of Tramon Williams he's "not concerned." My understanding: It's a cartilage issue, not ligament. No tears.

McCarthy said Tramon Williams should be back in a few weeks. His MRI is being sent off for a 2nd set of eyes. Expectation is minor injury
CB getting thin in the eary portions of camp. Hayward still out for a couple weeks and now looks like Tramon will be as well. House returned today, however. Guess the bright side is that Micah Hyde is getting a lot of reps and has reportedly looked really good
