Oh - and there's this:

Jermichael Finley set to visit with Seattle Seahawks

He hasn't been medically cleared yet from what I hear but perhaps Seattle's training staff wants to give that neck the once over.

Meh. These FA signings often don't work out. See Eagles circa 2011

What that off-season shows though is that you don't necessarily put yourself in salary cap hell as they are well situated cap wise after the experiment.

If Ward got a deal for $5.5 million/year, Byrd's deal shouldn't be north of $7 million/year.

Only Ward has struck me as a reasonable deal so far and he isn't exactly what we need back there anyway.

Maybe we do make a run for Byrd. Who knows.a

Ware isn't a realistic option. The team has committed to Nick Perry and they are not going to bring in a veteran player to take away snaps and potential development from Perry.

The only hope we have for Byrd is that he keeps being picky and teams fill their safety need, then we scoop him up at a lower price. That scenario is super unlikely, however, since the bills seem to have a significant offer on the table.

Lot of teams with need at Safety nabbed guys up today. Market is shortening for Byrd....and Pack still have plenty of cap space

I mean, it's shaping up well for a potential Byrd to GB deal but ugh, I don't want to get my hopes up

I think Byrd ends up in St. Louis. They have suffered from horrendous safety play in the last few seasons and will be willing to offer up more money than Green Bay.

Verner signs with Tampa 4 years, $26.5 million with $14 million guaranteed. I am more than happy to have Shields back but we missed the boat on market value for sure.

With all the FA OLB/DE's that are available, I have to think this helps GB's chance of keeping Mike Neal.

I want Neal and Pickett back, possibly Raji for that 1 year deal. Also Quarless or Finley and Kuhn.

I get that they want the DL to get younger and quicker, but you also need big mothers to stuff the run in December-February. Let Pickett coast through the start of the season and by the end of the year he is healthy and fresh.

Neal offers flexibility, something this defense needs.

A bit of news on EDS:

In other news involving Packers' free agents, center Evan Dietrich-Smith is scheduled to visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. ESPN NFL Insider Adam Caplan confirmed the visit. The New York Giants also are believed to be interested in Dietrich-Smith.

I'm getting the feeling the Packers are content to let him go.

Since it looks like we have to set our sights lower, here's a few free agents I would like to see targeted:

DE Alex Carrington - more of a penetrating player off-the-edge and fits the bill of bringing in more athleticism upfront

LB Wesley Woodyard - turn on Denver and he's a name you always hear...a three down linebacker with the ability to cover...yes please!

FS Kendrick Lewis - a player who has struggled the last couple of seasons as he has battled injuries but was very good when he arrived in the league...a low risk, high reward type player on a one year deal

C/G Phil Costa - provides flexibility inside, specifically at center, and will be cheap for a young player

The team doesn't place much value in the center position, which is surprising since the position calls the line audibles and is the quarterback of the offensive line. I don't mind letting EDS go though.

Lamar Woodley, if he finds the free agent field fallow, would be worth a look as well. A bit banged up but he might fit the bill and come far cheaper than Ware. Woodley might come at a good price and would light a fire under Perry which he sorely needs. Neal back as well would give us a good stable of pass rushers and, if Clay spends time hurt yet again, perhaps the pass rush might not disappear this year.

That leaves Tretter and a repositioned Barclay or Taylor? A project either way. I hear you though, EDS was serviceable but no great shakes.

I think it'll be Tretter or Lang. I'd like to see Phil Costa brought in to compete and provide depth at center and guard but haven't heard any connections to him.

Well at least we know for a fact that they'll be extending both Jordy and Cobb this year

$27 mill in cap space for them still

that is a ton of money for a Safety, and Byrd to the Pack was always a pipe dream. Looks like Rapoport's sources were off when he said Pack would be big players in FA this offseason

Ware is favoring the Broncos, who seem to be making a strong push for him.

And an odd aside; Jonathan Martin has been traded to the 49ers. Hopefully that sideshow from last year has been put to rest but Incognito's status is waiting in the wings.

Yep Lang took over at center when EDS was nicked up last season. Would probably let him and Tretter battle for that spot. If Tretter seizes the position Lang stays the starter at LG and is primary backup at OC again.
