You guys have no leverage. Everyone knows he doesn't fit your scheme. It was discussed about on these boards as soon as Mangini was hired and talk of a 3-4 defense came up. He also has a bad knee problem. And he wouldn't play like one of your top 5 guys next year in a 3-4.

Sounding like a done deal...
Quote:
A deal sending Jets linebacker Jonathan Vilma to the Saints will be completed and announced as early as this morning, according to NFL sources. The teams reached a tentative agreement Thursday night, with the Jets getting a conditional draft pick, probably in 2009, based on Vilma's performance.
In his first two years as a Jet, Vilma seemed destined for stardom. He was NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2004 and a Pro Bowl alternate in 2005. But in 2006, when Eric Mangini became coach and installed a 3-4 scheme, .Vilma's production dropped.
He played seven games in 2007 before a knee injury sidelined him. Vilma had surgery to remove bone fragments from his knee in November. While he was sidelined, rookie David Harris emerged as a standout, and despite starting only seven games, he led the team in tackles.
Though he never publicly said so, Vilma clearly was unhappy and ill-fitted in the 3-4. He was given permission by the Jets to seek a trade this offseason. After going to the combine in Indianapolis last weekend, he met with Saints officials this week and underwent a physical with the Lions on Wednesday. He recently wrote on his blog that he can jog but is several weeks away from running at full speed.

This is the same medical staff was had enough faith in Drew Brees while the Dolphins passed on him because of his shoulder injury...

then they aren't credible, but its not out of the question to think that he has a bad knee that could be reinjured and end his career.

And it isn't out of the question that it can be fully repaired and return to be a Pro Bowler.

That's the risk we took if the deal is true. Could you imagine if Drew Brees' shoulder didn't heal properly two season ago? We put our FRANCHISE in his shoulder's health and instead of taking Matt Leinart at #3, we signed Drew Brees instead. I bet the Dolphins are KICKING themselves over that one. Hell, Brees wanted to go to MIA over NO, but they passed and we came him a chance.

Definately not fully repaired, not after an injury and surgery like that.
But there is a good possibility that he could be a good player even with the injury, and i hope so, because i really like Vilma.

It'll be good news bud, he wouldn't have stayed with us after this year, atleast we have the potential of getting a second round pick (if that's true). If we can trade our 3rd rounder that we have now for jenkins than it's already a great offseason. I would imagine we'd look to trade drob too, but one step at a time.
Bottom line is, it's good that we got something from him instead of having him walk and get nothing. A 3rd seems to be the highest, but the fact it's conditional could validate his good play.

Haha...why is a 2009 pick nothing? Is the NFL going to shut down next year?

Bone chip removal is one of the least invasive knee surgeries you can have besides a regular scope. I'm not sure if everyone just read off somewhere that it was major knee surgery or if they went and did research on it, but being in the medical field i can tell you it's nothing near as dangerous as a microfracture surgery and to see him come back 100% this year is not at all out of the question.

It could go either way. Some people recover just fine from bone chip removal. But on the other end, I know someone that had bone chips removed from their elbow and it was never the same. So who knows. I'd bet that he'll recover perfectly though.

You could possibly chalk that up to average doctors/surgeons. We are talking the best of the best when you're a pro athlete.

"Always bet on stupidity". The Jets just fleeced themselves. Good job New Orleans, if true, you just moved one step closer back to the playoffs. :(

This is a fantastic deal for the Saints if it is true. With Vilma's salary off the books I wonder if the Jets are going after some big-name FA's and/or Gholston?

Ouch. Conditional 09 huh. Ouch. That said, I guess, if you do future value calculations, it comes out to basically the value that was expected for an 08 pick (3rd-4th). I don't get the Jets not pursuing a current year pick instead, though. That said, 09 could be a deeper year, albeit not at QB.
