The 03 draft was bad enough for us. I won't go into the Ben Troupe draft. I'll save that for another Titans fan.

Round 1 - 28 Overall CB Chris Gamble - The best man coverage corner back currently in the NFC South. Solid tackler who is good when playing his game. Struggles at times when he's asked to play off as he tends to live up to his name sake. Has potential to be one of the elite corners in the game and IMO made massive strides under Tim Lewis. This year he should shine and receive his deserved recognition if the team makes some noise.

Grade: A-

Round 2 - 62 Overall WR Keary Colbert - Showed flashes of brilliance in his rookie year. Possessing good route running ability and at times great YAC ability his future seemed bright. Turned lazy and injured in 05 and didn't do much of anything except drop passes and block for steve smith. Was expected to make some kind of impact the last two years but didn't seem to have his heart in the game. He'd drop simple passes and then come off the field grinning. For some rediculous reason Denver gave him more than we gave DJ Hackett this offseason. No wonder they fired their GM.

Grade: D+

Round 3 - 94 Overall OL Travelle Wharton - Really a good pick, when you consider the Panthers got a starting LT for 2 seasons who played quite well for the most part. A better guard than many in the conference he should see his stock as a player take a rise this year when he's shifted inside to his more natural position. Too slow to be a good tackle but perfect as a ZBS or even a pulling guard.

Grade: B

Round 4 - 163 Overall WR Drew Carter - Classic Burner who'd make the WTF? catch and then drop a lateral. Never lived up to his physical ability and won't in oakland either.

Grade C-

Round 5 - 196 Overall LB Sean Tufts - Nothing line backer who made some noise on special teams and didn't do a whole lot else. Great hitter and technically a perfect tackler, slow, mentally and physically though.

Grade D

Round 7 - 232 Overall TE Michael Gaines - Considering his draft position and what he's contributed in Carolina and the Bills he was a great pick. The guy has rocks in his head and at times drops simple balls. He's also lazy and usually fat. But at the time he had the potential to be the next algae crumpler and imo Still has all but the mental and determinate tools to do so.

Grade B-

Jaguars...

9th overall- Reggie Williams, WR, Washington...Hindsight being what it is...this pick probably should have been Big Ben, there's no way Williams should have been drafted this high...Lee Evans, Dunta Robinson or even Vilma probably should have been picked...but the Jags patience with Williams has paid off, Williams set the franchise receiving TD record with 10 last season so I think it's safe to say that he's finally starting to show why he was picked in the top 10....GRADE: B-

39th Overall- Daryl Smith, MLB, Georgia Tech...When the Jags first selected Smith over Julius Jones and Bob Sanders I wondered what they were doing...but now I'm extremely happy that they picked Smith...IMO Smith is a top 10 linebacker...he's never been to the probowl because he's not flashy, he just gets the job done...in three seasons he's started every game and he's tallied over 300 tackles....GRADE: A+

55th Overall- Greg Jones, RB/FB, FSU...Jones was selected to be Fred Taylor's eventual replacement but the FO and coaching staff noticed that he was built like a FB with RB speed...so they worked on his blocking and he's one of the best FB's in the league...he's been injured alot but when he's on the field he's a great blocker and even better gap runner....GRADE: B+

86th overall- Jorge Cordova, LB, Nevada...tore his ACL his rookie season and then fractured his leg his sophomore season...never really saw any real playing time...he was released this past offseason....GRADE: F

118th overall- Anthony Maddux, DT, Delta State...Had great potential but was lazy and had some off the field problems...he was released after a season with the Jags...I think he currently plays for the Texans or Cowboys...GRADE: D-

120th Overall- Ernest Wilford, WR, Virginia Tech...probably the best pick other than Smith in this draft for the Jags...Wilford was never flashy and he wasn't very fast but he was one of the best possession WR's in his time in Jax...he led the team in touchdowns and receptions at one point in his career in Jax...he was a FA this offseason and signed with the Miami Dolphins...GRADE: B+

137th Overall- Josh Scobee, K, Louisiana Tech...Scobee has been a very good kicker for the Jaguars the past two seasons...it took him a while to get going but it looks like he'll be our kicker for a very long time....GRADE: A

150th Overall- Chris Thompson, CB, Nicholls State...never saw the field, was placed on the Practice Squad and then released...GRADE: F

159th Overall- Sean Bubin, OT, Illinois...showed some promise in TC and was supposed to play backup but never really got going...he was released...GRADE: F

249th Overall- Bobby McCray, DE, Florida...he was a genuine steal in the seventh round and quickly produced in his time in Jax...had a 10 sack season back in 2006 but couldn't follow it up in 2007...he was a free agent this offseason and signed with the New Orleans Saints...GRADE: B

Patriots:

1. NT Vince Wilfork, Miami (FL) = A+
1. TE Ben Watson, Georgia = B
2. DE Marquise Hill, Louisiana St. = Incomplete
3. FS Guss Scott, Florida = D-
4. SS Dexter Reid, North Carolina = F
4. RB Cedric Cobbs, Arkansas = D-
5. WR P.K. Sam, Florida St. = D-
7. CB Christian Morton, Illinois = F

Overall = B

The Patriots ended up landing two starters, Wilfork an elite one, and then a few practice squadders, so it was a pretty good draft considering. I never did get why they drafted Scott, Reid, and Morton, though. I didn't like any of them at all. I was pretty surprised that Cobbs and Sam never did anything though. I didn't evaluate Marquise Hill because he died and was buried on the depth chart.

Landing Warren, Samuel, and Koppen in the same draft is a pretty ridiculous achievement. Failed on Bethel Johnson and Dan Klecko or would have been an A+.

Osi, diehl and tyree were great picks, joseph and shiancoe are still in the league but have done little to warrant their first day selections, the rest are out of the league I think. But Osi has gone from late second rounder to one of the best DEs in the league, diehl is one of the most effective and versatile olineman around, he's started at every spot but center and was as good as snee when he was at guard and tyree is a special teams beast who completed The Great Escape with The Grab.

The best player to come out of that draft is our longsnapper. Ryan Pontbriand \/ \/ \/ \/.
Pontbriand was a pro bowler. And we picked Jeff Faine in the first who was a bust for us, but once he got out of the AFC North and away from Casey Hampton, Kelly Gregg, Ray Lewis, and co. he looked pretty decent. He's not pro bowl material (though he did make a pro bowl in NOLA) but he is the highest paid center in the league and fits well into the WCO. 2 pro bowlers, maybe a D- instead of an F.

Overall a very solid draft. Not sure about letter grades, but Eli, Snee, Torbor, and Wilson all contributed to this team in a big way, especially en route to winning a superbowl. Taylor showed promise but got hurt and retired from football. The two 7th round picks were cut. So basically this draft was a good draft for us.

Hows does 3 D- and 2 Fs and 1 B and 1 A+ = B. Wilfork is good but come on its almost a 5/2 ratio. C+ is what would be reasonable here. B would be possible if the third or 4th round guys had better grades.

Well it's not like you expect to get As and Bs in last couple rounds.

Started a few games for us at center and unlike Walker didn't get flaggedeverytime he touched the field. Moved on pretty quickly though and has made couple of other teams rosterss as a backup guard/center. Nothing special but more than the walking yellow flag frank walker.

I remember the name just don't remember him on the field for some reason. I liked walker's potential, but it's too bad he kept racking up penalties.

1. Robert Gallery, OT - Was a bust at tackle but played at a very high level at times at guard. C+

2. Jake Grove, OC - Played a bit but struggled a lot and is now a backup. D-

3. Stuart Schweigert. S - Has been our starter at FS for a few years and has made a few plays here and there but isn't really starting martial. C-

The rest of the draft is no longer with the team

Carlos Francis - WR
Johnnie Mortant -WR
Shawn Johnson - DE
Cody Spencer - LB
Courtney Anderson - TE, was a starter for about a year or two, can be a red zone threat.
Andre Sommersell -LB

Overall - Ouch

For the Jags fans,

What happened to Matt Jones? I remember him creating a huge buzz during that draft, and now sort of disappeared. Does he get hurt alot? Drop balls? What's the deal with him?

2005 - Detroit Lions

1 Pick 10 Mike Williams WR USC
Seriously 3 WR in a row. Claimed to be a future "HOFer" by Mel Kiper. What a mess. Caught a td in his first game and a td in his last game as a Lion. In between did absolutley nothing and was a health scratch often under Marinelli/Martz. Dropped a pass in 06 that allowed us to pick Calvin Johnson. Weight Problems and not fitting Martz style, poor attitude which didn't work with Marinelli and he was traded/fill in McCown deal after only 2 years with a nice 5 million cap hit.
Grade: Can I give worse than an F. I give a Z for this.

2 37 Shaun Cody DE USC Decent rookie year, then fell into the Millen 2nd round injury curse in year 2 (Boss,Lehman,Cody,Bullokcs all hurt in year 2). Played terrible this year in 07 aside from one 1 int. He's a bullfighter in run defense using the ole' techinque often. Decent rookie year, injured year 2, made it obvious that Shaun Rogers wasn't on the field in 2007. He will be the next Marinelli purge if he doesn't get his act together. Ellis Wyms and Booger McFarland are still available Marinelli. We need to complete the ReBuccaneering.
Grade: D-

Its amazing. 2 USC guys in a program known for dominating and winning National Championships, come to the Lions and turn into garbage.

3 72 Stanley Wilson DB Stanford
Stanley "Toast" Wilson showed flashes in 4 games in 2006 when Bryant had his annual injury. Earned the starting job in 2007 and earned the name "Toast". Even though the Lions were playing well in the first half of 07, Wilson was not and was benched. Then he got injured and went on IR. He made Curtis and Randle El look like pro-bowlers. He like Cody has one more shot but luckily this year he is way down the depth chart.
Grade: D-

5 145 Dan Orlovsky QB Connecticut
3rd String QB. Everyone wanted him as the 2nd stringer but he was beaten out by O- Martz Man Crush Sullivan. He has some potential but we have Stanton so we'll never know with Danny O.
Grade C

6 184 Bill Swancutt DE Oregon State
Undersized. Cut before 06 season I believe. If Marinelli doesn't like him, then he's garbage.
Grade: D

6 206 Johnathan Goddard LB Marshall
Never heard of him. He may have been drafted and cut on the same day. I have no clue. Grade:E for effort.

Overall. 3rd string QB, a terrible backup DT IMO and a mess at WR. Not to mention constantly being made fun for picking 3 WRS in a row.

I give this draft a grade of FM: Fire Millen.

He was Ahmad Caroll minus the speed or off field issues.

3. (95) Billy McMullen, WR, Virginia Bust. Oh God this guy was terrible. Scared to go over the middle, terrible hands etc... F

4. (131) Jamaal Green, DE, Miami. Another bust. Who exactly is he?

6. Jeremy Bridges, G, Mississippi Who? F

7. Norman Lejeune, S, LSU Who? F

WHAT THE **** WAS GOING ON HERE?

1. McDougle never got on track due to injuries early, then tragic luck. Bust for sure, but with a caveat because he got shot.

2. LJ Smith is a B+. Solid weapon, turned himself into a decent blocker. Never became a superstar, but a fringe Pro Bowler.

3. Billy McMullen. D. Agree with your assessment of his skills, but he also was traded to the Vikings for the competent Hank Baskett.

4. Jamaal Green. F. Busted out and never became what he was supposed to be. Was touted like Trent Cole in the draft.

6. Jeremy Bridges. C-. Was a solid guy and backup. Still in the league, I believe.

7. Norman LeJune. F. Never made the team.

Well we got Kellen Winslow and Sean Jones. Let's leave it at that, one of the best tight ends in the game and one of the best young safeties in the AFC. Not much beyond that from Butch Davis.
