GREAT Matt Ryan + Falcons article: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...505/index.html
Favorite part: Before the trip Dimitroff thought Dorsey, the LSU pass rusher, was the best player in the draft. But Ryan's workout in Chestnut Hill, Mass., and a three-hour dinner-interrogation started to change that thinking. At the restaurant Dimitroff tested the quarterback's loyalty to his teammates when he noted that Ryan's receivers had dropped some 50 passes last season. He asked if Ryan thought he'd have been a better passer with more talented wideouts. Ryan told the Falcons' group he'd take those guys any day of the week. "Perfect," Mularkey said later. "He could have killed them, but he was a great teammate."
Then in a 50-minute session using the whiteboard in the BC football meeting room, the coaches briefed Ryan on the offense Atlanta will run next season, explaining tendencies and playcalls. Musgrave drew a formation with motion, then gave the marker to Ryan. Mularkey would call out a play, and Ryan would have to show the route tree for his receivers and the progression of his reads. Ryan did so well -- better by far than the other five quarterbacks, Mularkey said later -- that the coordinator began throwing out more plays. For the final one, Mularkey described an option route with four receivers and quarterback movement, a play that sounded to Ryan like one BC ran called 335 Naked. Ryan rattled off the assignments of the four receivers and his progression -- how he'd look to the tight end first, slot receiver second and wideouts third and fourth.
"It wasn't just that he got it right," said Mularkey. "It's that he got it right fast, which is so important in this game. You've got to process information. We limit the terminology in our offense. We want it to be quick and up-tempo, and for the quarterback, intelligence is vital."

I knew BC's receivers were bad, but wow, fifty dropped passes? And he still completed 59% of his passes! You were right, that is a great article.

The Falcons evaluators liked Henne's grit, leadership and ability, but he was ranked second to Ryan
I thought that we would like Henne. That is interesting to know he was our second choice. The alternative draft would most likely have been Glenn Dorsey, Sam Baker, then Chad Henne. Not bad.

I would have celebrated that with a 12 Pack of Natty Ice. Instead, we got Matty Ice. Either way, I'll be getting drunk watchin Falcons games next year.

I just re-read this again after this thread got bumped up, and this wouldn't have been the case. Everything I've read says it would have went Dorsey, and then a trade back up for Henne.

Seeing that we are 7-24 w/o Vick since 2002, I can't say that being anti-Vick is enough to breed success.
People are riding this wave of "intangibles" on Matt Ryan as if it could make up for all the tangibles that he lacks.

Did anyone watch the Falcons rookie golf video on nfl.com? Matt Ryan is truly the anti-Vick. His personality seems so amazing. He is out there having fun with his fellow rookies, joking around with the HC. And then when he is accepting the largest rookie deal in history next to Goodell and Blank, he doesnt break a sweat. I cant wait to see him on the field.

I wasn't sure if you Atlanta fans had seen this...
RYAN’S ACTUAL GUARANTEE? “ONLY” $27.3 MILLION
Quote:

In response to our story regarding the inability of teams at the top of the draft to guarantee money in the sixth year of rookie contracts after the unanimous opt-out vote by NFL owners last week, a league source tells us that Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan received an actual guarantee upon signing his contract of only $27.3 million, not the $34.75 million that previously has been reported.
The difference comes from the so-called “log” bonus, which is short for “falling off a log,” which means that the guy gets the money for not doing anything other than achieving minimum playing time, presumably in any year of the deal. (The most notable exception in this regard was Browns tight end Kellen Winslow, whose “log” bonus could have been triggered in his rookie year only, and who failed to reach the 30-percent trigger in his rookie year of 2004 because he broke a leg while playing special teams early in the season.)
Ryan’s guarantee comes from a rookie pool number for Ryan in the amount of $2.8 million. For 2008, he receives the minimum base salary of $295,000, and the rest of the $2.8 million is paid out via a roster bonus of $2.505 million, with no signing bonus.
Under the CBA, Ryan’s contract is permitted to grow each year by 25 percent of the first-year salary, which based on $2.8 million is $700,000. Thus, the calculation is simple at this point; for each successive year, the number increases by 700 large.
For 2009, Ryan gets a guaranteed salary of $3.5 million. For 2010, he receives $4.2 million. For 2011, the number is $4.9 million. In 2012, Ryan’s number is $5.6 million. Finally, he receives $6.3 million guaranteed in 2013.
Adding it all up, it’s $27.3 million.
For Rams defensive end Chris Long, the absence of a sixth-year guarantee means that his maximum guarantee (assuming a rookie pool number of $2.9 million) will be $21.75 million. At a higher rookie pool amount of $3 million (which would cut into what the Rams can pay its other rookies in 2008 by $100,000), Long’s maximum guarantee at signing is $22.5 million.
Of course, Long can get more via the “log” bonus. But it’s not truly a guarantee at signing because there’s a chance that neither Long nor Ryan will participate in at least 30 percent of the snaps on their respective sides of the ball in any year of the deal.
