The Cowboys and Terence Newman agreed to a six-year extension worth $50.2 million on Tuesday, beating a deadline in which the salary-cap rules will change after NFL owners decided to opt out of the final three years of the collective bargaining agreement.

He will receive $22.5 million guaranteed over the first three years of the contract.

Good to have him. Hard worker and keeps his mouth shut.

Hard to say without details but that contract is a bit long for a 30 year old. Better hope he stays healthy for a long time.

The Dallas Morning News reports that Terence Newman has agreed to a six-year, $50.2 million extension with the Cowboys.
$22.5 million of the contract is guaranteed over the first three years of the deal. The 29-year-old, who made his first Pro Bowl last season, was due to become an unrestricted free agent in 2009. The two sides narrowly beat a deadline put into effect by the owners opting out of the CBA that would have imposed stricter salary cap limitations on the contract.

Does this give us more wiggle room this year in the cap to sign players? Usually thats how it works, deals are more backloaded to free up a little more space in the short term.


Well our CB position looks pretty damn solid right now, here's to hoping he can play at the level he is now or another 3-4 years.

There's no discount. Not close, really.

Marcus Trufant just signed a 6-yr/50.2M deal, same total numbers there (more guaranteed money for Trufant I believe though). It's close to Asante Samuel's 6 yrs/57M contract, and Samuel is three years younger and more of a playmaker the last two years, although maybe not as good a pure cover corner as Newman. Deangelo Hall signed a bigger deal with the Raiders, obviously the fact that he'll be 25 this November was a factor worth considering.

Yeah, i don't see a discount anywhere here. Coming into his contract talks he wanted to be paid like a top corner, and he very much did. I don't mind it, cause he's been the most consistent player on our defense for the past few years outside of Ware.

I have no clue how our cap situation is now though. For those that are wondering, Newman's hit shouldn't be substantially larger than it already was, seeing as he had been paid big money as a rookie. It should be about 2 or 3 million more per year on the cap as compared to his first deal.

Barbers' though is way bigger. He was playing on a 4th rounders contract, and now you bump that up to Top 5 RB money.

I would love to see some updated cap figures as well, I'll keep an eye on it...But one thing I don't worry about is Jerry working the cap, just like Snyder, these guys might love to spend the big bucks but they have always done a great job of fitting everyone under and keeping our guys paid.


Here's to hoping T-New stays healthy next year, he played damn good for the amount of injuries he was forced to play with, 100% and we can throw him man to man with the best of them...Just flat out unfair if we can get to see him and Pacman on the field at the same time.

** The Cowboys can prorate the signing bonuses Newman and Barber received over six years instead of five had a contract not been worked out.

** The 30 percent rule, which states a player's cap number cannot increase by more than 30 percent each year. By doing it now, the 30 percent rule does not apply untiul 2011. Had they waited a day, then the rule would hit in 2009. I haven't seen the contracts yet, but it's a safe bet Newman and Barber will carry big numbers in 2010.

**There's also a not-likely-to-be-earned incentive change under the new rules, but I'm told these contracts do not feature such incentives.

It was very important getting these deals done today as it helps us alot more in the long run, gotta love that aspect of it...Had that 30% increase hit in 09, that seriously limits who we can re-sign and bring back, 11 gives us some breathing room.
