Alright, if you wanna argue the fact that between the AFC South and NFC East, the best division sends the most teams to the playoffs then....

In 2007-08:
NFC East sent 3 (Washington, NY Giants, Dallas)
AFC South sent 3 (Indy, Jacksonville, Tennessee)

In 2006-07:
NFC East sent 3 (Philadelphia, Dallas, NY Giants)
AFC South sent 1 (Indianapolis)

In 2005-06:
NFC East sent 2 (NY Giants, Washington)
AFC South sent 2 (Indy, Jacksonville)

All 4 NFC East teams have made the playoffs in the past 3 years. Only 3 AFC South teams have made it and Tennessee just did it once.

NFC South shouldn't be getting listed in the bottom 3.

In the past ten years all but 2 NFCCG's have had an NFC team.

98-99 Falcons who went on to the SB and lost
99-00 Tampa Bay
02-03 Tampa Bay who went on the SB and won
03-04 Carolina who went on to the SB and lost by a FG
04-05 Atlanta Falcons
05-06 Carolina Panthers
06-07 New Orleans

That's all but three seasons, sure every year the division is up in the air but to have four years with a different team shows that with the bounce of the ball the NFC South can be a very good division.

New Orleans looks vastly improved, Tampa made the playoffs last year and the Panthers should be right in the mix this year.
I'm not saying they're even equal to the East or the AFC South, but they're better than the West and North in the NFC IMO.

But that's to assume the AFC and NFC are equal, which they are not. A 10-6 team missed out in the AFC last season. It is arguably tougher to make the playoffs in the AFC.

I Think a tie breaker between the 2 divisions should go like this-

Would You be suprised if the Cowboys won the divison?
NO
Would you be suprised if the Giants won the division?
NO
Would you be suprised if the Redskins won the division?
NO
Would you be suprised if the Eagles won the division?
NO

and

Would you be suprised if the Colts won the division?
NO
Jaguars?
I'd be more suprised that the Colts lost
Titans?
Yes
Texans?
Yes

My opinion is that the NFC East is more even talent wise and you could shake the teams up into any order and I wouldn't be suprised.

Right, but this goes back to how you define being the top division. Is the best division determined by which one is the hardest for the teams in it to win, or the hardest for teams outside it to play? I think the NFC East is harder in that all four teams are contenders to win it (kinda, see below), but perhaps the AFC South is a tougher division to play against for a team not in it.

Also, the fact you'd be surprised if anyone but the Colts won the South plays more in favor for the division's toughness than it doesn't. Think of it this way - while you may not be surprised if the Redskins won the East, you certainly would be if they won it if the Colts were also in the East. The Cowboys are good, but perhaps the lack of a true consistent divisional power in the East (such as the Colts in the South) is the reason why you perceive all four East teams could win. In other words, put the Titans, Jaguars and Texans in the same situation as the East where they don't have a long term consistent top 2 team in their division, and maybe it isn't so surprising they win it - the Colts being where they are doesn't necessarily mean the other teams in the South are lacking in general, they're just lacking in comparison to the Colts.

Anyway, IMO we should be talking about which division is hardest to play, not win. Technically speaking, the weakest division in the NFL could be the hardest to win for the teams in it, if all four are garbage teams - after all, all that matters is how close they are to each other. Of course, they'd be a cupcake division to play against as an outside team, so I think that's the criteria we should be looking at here. Just because the AFC South only has one, maybe two teams realistically in the winner talk doesn't mean the other teams not in winning discussion are easier to play against than teams in a division where the winner is a crapshoot - it's relative to who is in the divisions.

Good point, OzTitan. Put it this way: How many teams in the NFC East would have a good chance of winning the other divisions in the NFC?

How many teams in the AFC South would have a good chance of winning the other divisions in the AFC?

I contend that the AFC South goes all the way down to all 4 teams in terms of likelyhood to win any division in the AFC short of the East. And two of them could maybe to that.

Win in your given conference and division. This whole now comparing Conferences is garbage. It is what it is, there are two conferences, and that can't be changed. In our given conference and given division, we do what we can to put teams in the playoffs. Same with all the other divisions.

Like I said before if the AFC South wants more respect then make it a habit in your given conference and division to put consistently put more teams in the playoffs.
