Default Training Camp news

I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread for people to post news from their teams TC.

I've got a couple of questions too:

Washington: How's Brennan looking?
Detroit: Has Stanton got any better, I hear Olorvsky is was listed as the 2nd QB?

Panthers update: http://www.carolinagrowl.com/Read.aspx?Story=633

Quote:
During 9-on-7 drills one of Carolina’s offensive linemen failed to block veteran linebacker Thomas Davis who came roaring through the middle of the line and knocked Stewart off his feet and on to his back.

Thud!

“Welcome to the NFL,” Davis told him.

A few plays later, Stewart settled in and showed the combination of speed, strength and quickness that persuaded the Panthers to draft him 13th overall as he broke a tackle inside and bounced outside and took off up the sidelines for a nice gain.

“After that hit I was trying to dish it out a little bit,” Stewart said.
Stewart later dropped a pass in the flat after taking his eye off the ball. He probably should have dropped the next one as well since Davis was there to clock him again.

“I came out here and it was like a sheep thrown into the wolves today,” he said with a grin, probably knowing that one day he'll look back on this day and laugh.

Still, he left the field feeling good about his first NFL practice, considering this was his first practice since undergoing turf toe surgery.
“I’m breaking in my toe a little bit,” Stewart said. “It’s going to take me some time to be my regular self. I can feel it, but it’s one of those things where it’s bearable and it’s going to get better as we work through these things.”
Sounds pretty stock standard for a rookie but I really don't like what he had to say about his turf toe. I hope the team is cautious with him.

Me and my dad drove to camp today but there was so much traffic we missed the entire scrimmage by the time we got there. 30,000 people showed up at skins park today. Wish I could have seen Brennan.

I've heard that Zorn does like Colt. However, there is a lot of refining Zorn wants to do to Colt's dropback and sidearm throwing motion. He's short already and with that throwing motion it would result in too many batted balls.
He has the right mindset and is willing to learn from one of the better QB developers. But based on the recent intersquad scrimmage, he didn't fare too well.

Colt is probably a 1-2 more year project in order to have a chance to be a successful QB in the NFL.

Otah is throwing the scout team defense around like rag dolls.

Quote:
The first thing you notice about right tackle Jeff Otah is the way other almost-as-large men fly backward after colliding with him.
Quote:
Otah, on the other hand, looked like a rampaging elephant at times.
They list him at 6-6 and 330 pounds, but he seems bigger, whether he's enveloping on-rushing defenders or filling doorways.
There were times when defensive end Tyler Brayton looked helpless against him, with Otah shoving him back in both pass-rush and running drills. It's the running game in which they're most excited about his addition (though they think he has the kind of light feet to play on the left side eventually).
Bad news about Brayton though lol/.

Orlovsky is the back-up right now, but Stanton is still essentially a rookie. He got hurt pretty early in training camp last year and was put on IR.

Gosder Cherilus and Jonathan Scott have been playing both the LT and RT spots.

I was at Eagles camp yesterday and today, and here are a few things:
Donovan looks great, if he stays healthy, expect a big year.
Westbrook is his usual self, despite the contract issues.
Lito and Sheldon look good. Haven't seen much on Asante, day to day with a pulled hammy.
Our LBs are very fast and very athletic. Lots of playmaking potential.
Dawkins has been quiet, but that is usually the case this time of year.
Kolb has looked Inconsistent.
Eagles fourth round pick Quentin Demps is the main reason Kolb has been inconsistent. He has had a pick in every practice,a nd has looked very impressive all around.
SS is up for grabs, either Mikell or Considine have a legitimate shot.
FB is wide open, Jason Davis, Luke Lawton, and maybe even udrafted rookie FA Jed Collins out of Washington state could win the starters role. Right now though Davis has a slight lead over Lawton.
Max Jean Gilles is doing a great job of filling in for Andrews.
Winston Justice looks to have a bright future as a RT.
7th round pick LT King Dunlap may be the tallest player in the NFL. He has been listed anywhere from 6'8 to 6'10.
LJ Smith is healthy and is looking good.
DeSean Jackson will make an impact as a return man and a slot right away. He isn't anywhere near a #1 WR, or #2 for that matter yet, but in a year or so, could be.
LDEs Victor Abiamiri, Juqua Parker (Thomas) and Chris Clemons is going to be a great rotation with balance. All bring different components, but the pass rush is there and so is the run stuffing.
Bunkley and Patterson are doing well, the whole D-line has been making plays.
P Sav Rocca is more consistent and is booming punts.
Backup LBs have a lot of competition. MLB Joe Mays seems to be leading in the backup role.
OLB Andy Studebaker is raw, and makes some mistakes, but has also made tons of plays.
Reggie Brown seems to have something different this year. I'm hoping it means he will finally be the #1 we expected him to be, but I'm not sure yet.
Lorenzo Booker is looking like a Westbrook Clone. He is used in any situation possible. WARNING: To all NFL Defenses: This guy will create mismatch problems.<< Greg Lewis may be the odd man out at WR. Jason Avant is playing well, but Lewis is also playing well right now. Hank Baskett seems safe to me. The last WR spot will come down to Avant and GLew.
Trevor Laws and 3rd round pick Bryan smith have minor injuries, and have sat out camp so far.

I know that is a lot, and I could have done way more, but there you go, I think that is pretty much all the info you need to know from Eagles camp. (I may have covered every starter and backup:D:D)

Will Smith is down to 275lbs, Charles Grant 278lbs and Hollis Thomas lost A LOT of weight but no word on how much yet. Everyone on the D-Line has been more explosive and seem to have more energy than last year at this time. Hollis thomas in particular has been having a outstanding TC, as he pancaked all of the Saints O-linemen at least once, some a couple times and blowed through Jammal Brown, knocking him to the ground. Maybe drafting Ellis lit a fire for Thomas, I don't know or our new D-line Coach but he looks like a beast.

Bobby McCray first step is amazing. By far the Saints fastest D-linemen off the snap. He's pretty bad at trying to stop the run, though. Good thing he is our 3rd down pass rush specialist.

Rookie WR Adrian Arrington is catching everything thrown his way. Everyday, he keeps making plays and that's something Marques Colston did in his first TC. But he does need to work on getting off the line a little faster and his run blocking needs work. Somebody needs to check his hands for glue, though. Ditto for Robert Meachem.

Word is, Adam Jones has been a terror in the secondary thus far in camp. He's playing aggressive, picking off balls, laying the wood, and keeping with TO pretty darn well. If he stays out of trouble (BIG if), he's going to be one hell of a player.

Rough Day for the Ravens.

Haloti Ngata was carted off with a left-leg injury.
Willis McGahee is out with a left-leg injury.

Actually Adam Jones was lit up repeatedly at the practice this evening. From what the reports are saying...but he is matching himself up with TO as much as possible..even cutting in line occasionally in 1 on 1 drills just to face him.

The bright spot in dallas right now that most won't be told about is Sam Hurd. No doubt in my mind right now that he will be the starting WR opposite of TO opening day. Hurd is a better fit at the 2 spot because Crayton is such an elite slot guy. That said I'm sure we won' thave a set #2 all year...but Hurd should be the outside guy most of the time with Crayton in the slot...also look for our special package with Felix Jones spread out wide and Barber in the backfield...dallas cutting Terry Glenn has lead to a lot of mumbles about who is going to replace him...but between, Bennett, Jones, Hurd, Curtis his loss will be minimal imo.

On the defensive side of the ball...dallas should be towards the top of the league in pass defense this year...the depth of the secondary is really showing when they go into a passive defensive scheme. Watch out for Dallas' pass happy defense...Jenkins and Jones out wide...Newman in the slot...Henry in tight usually with TE or RB assignments...and Hamlin and Watkins manning the safety positions. Thats as deep of a secondary as anyone in the NFL right now.

Another thing to note is James Marten is still taking snaps at LG...and it appears that both Free and McQwisten will be manning the backup tackle positions for awhile...so Martens chance to stick is going to be on the inside for awhile.

The last point of interest from cowboys camp is the battle for the bottom WR spot....mini camp star Danny Amendola is still fighting for a spot on the roster and it looks like it'll be a battle for the final roster spot with a safety at this point. Want to see Amendola make the team look no further than the Adam Jones reinstatement as a parameter...Amendola is an upgrade over crayton as a punt returner and if Goodell doesn't reinstate Adam...then look for Amendola's value to go up with the organization. If I had to make a guess the final roster spot should be a toss up between Amendola and Dowayne Davis SS.

Niners:
-Talk of Shaun Hill being the starter is BS being fed to Alex to push him in the offseason. All the beat writers have said it.
-Josh Morgan is playing superbly in TC and Lelie cant stay healthy, it's entirely plausible that Lelie will be cut if Morgan plays well enough.
-Vernon Davis [i]hasnt/I] been involved in an on-field fight yet (hooray!)

Haloti Ngata and Jarrett Johnson got in a fight w/ Todd Heap, punches were thrown. Oneil Cousin also got into 2 fights so far. They are probably upset they actually have to work in training camp instead of Billick powder puff camp.

Theme of Titans camp so far has been D, or more specifically, the defensive line. Jason Jones is apparently impressing, with the usual suspects in KVB and AH doing well. Stephen Tulloch filled in for Thornton at OLB while he was away and is really coming along - he may beat Fowler for the MLB spot. Not sure about DB's but Reynaldo Hill has been making some plays.

On offense Brandon Jones is doing well along with Gage and McCareins, with Mike Williams showing flashes but not without some quiet periods. Most other WR's are about as expected. Crumpler is looking great. White is doing ok but is not in football shape yet (surprise surprise). Henry is doing ok but struggling to standout. Johnson is looking good so far but until full contact ensues, he will be an unknown. Dinger in a recent interview suggested he could be the Titans primary RB though. Vince has shown improvement in the quick/short game but overall the D has outplayed the O.

These are all the general themes in most reports (i.e. I'm not there, obviously *<-- points to location*).

I feel much better about this team after just one training camp visit. I have been to the last several years. The past two seasons I did not think they looked all that great. This season so far I am much more optimistic.

- Jason Carter probably has the best throwing arm on the team. Go figure.
- Jake and Smitty are in mid season form. Really.
- Stewart is faster than I thought. He broke a few runs up the gut that had the crowd in awe.
- Otah is one bad mamma jamma. He was throwing guys around like rag dolls.
- Moose made a really nice grab over the middle, and smiled as the crowed yelled mooooooose.
- The defense has a chip on their shoulder once again, taking it personally when a good play is made. Talking trash. Very promising.
- Schwartz is a big dude and will make the team. He is stronger than anyone gives him credit for.
- I am surprised how little talk Kalil is getting. There is a huge difference between last season and this season. He now has a swagger and a confidence.
That is what the dude who runs the Panthers huddle had to say and he's far from an apologist.

Hilee Taylor is looking like a big disappointment though

Hackett isn't adjusting as fast as expected to the new system either.

-Rookie WR Dexter Jackson, who stands just 5-9 and weighs 182 pounds, looks like he may have deceptive strength to go with his speed, a la Joey Galloway. On two snaps during the one-on-ones, he had to fight against pressing cornerbacks, and on both cases he more than held his own, first with CB Elbert Mack and then with CB Ronde Barber. On the second one, Jackson broke free to catch a "touchdown pass."

-Morris was his usual outspoken self, celebrating two Aqib Talib interceptions with some loud praise and even a jumping high five with the rookie after his second pick.
Talib’s first interception came off a Brian Griese throw towards the sideline. WR Maurice Stovall grabbed Talib immediately, but Talib pitched the ball to Phillips who streaked down the sideline for a touchdown with Morris running right alongside him. The second of Talib’s picks came off a throw in traffic from Chris Simms. Talib jumped a short route over the middle and took the ball away from the intended receiver.

Here's some stuff from Bolts camp...Hester is impressing, and Rivers is looking like he's already built on last season's excellent stretch run.

Rivers showing zing in his wing

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

July 28, 2008
Whether it is new strength in his legs or the results of “a very good offseason in the weight room,” the ball is flying out of Philip Rivers' hand.
“I feel crisper,” said Rivers, who is absolutely zinging balls short and long. “I don't know if it's a zip, but it's coming out crisp.”

Rivers does look thicker in his upper body. He began working out earlier in the offseason because he was around the complex rehabbing his surgically repaired ACL. But also strengthening the muscles in his legs has given him a new bounce.
“Some of it may be the lower body,” he said yesterday. “A lot of people say you come back stronger.”

Merriman being careful
Shawne Merriman is wearing a brace on his left knee mostly out of caution while camp is full of guys flying around trying to impress coaches.
“Right now there is a lot of competition going on,” said Merriman, who had his meniscus repaired in March. “I don't want anything crazy happening.”

Merriman said the knee is totally healed, but he held out the possibility he could continue wearing the brace in September.

Hester plays big
On the first day of wearing pads, one player stood out as a different beast. Even though there was no real hitting, rookie running back Jacob Hester looked and played bigger in pads vs. shells.
Teammates noticed, some even commenting to him how much different he looked.

“That's kind of my style,” Hester said. “I like to put my shoulders down.

Nuts 'n' Bolts
Derek Smith took turns with the first team in place of Stephen Cooper for the first time. Smith is the likely replacement for Cooper at inside linebacker the first month of the season while Cooper serves his NFL suspension for a positive test for a banned stimulant.
Jeremy Newberry, who will likely start the season at center while Nick Hardwick's foot continues to heal, worked for the second straight practice with the first team. It is important for him to get down a rhythm with the guards he plays next to, as well as with Rivers.

Since I'm not going to break down every reason why the Giants will dominate and have no flaws, here's some actual news:

Kenny Phillips is flat out nuts. Few nasty picks, including a remarkable diving INT. Looks legit

Kevin Boss is no longer diving for passes or stumbling around. He looks fluid out there and VERY comfortable. Almost nonchalant. Gives G-Men fans hope.

more, and VERY surprising news: TE Darcy Johnson is catching the ball!!!!

TE Michael Matthews isn't. oh wait, that's not news :D

Falcons camp:

Chris Redman seems to be doing well. I liked him alot last season and I felt as if we could have gone a year with him starting (and taken Dorsey...then maybe Stafford).

Matt Ryan seems to being all right. Just about average (which is kind of lame because its TC and everyone does well). Oh well. Its just his first couple of TC practices.

Brent Grimes is a guy you might wanna know about. He has basically come out of no where and is making a really good impression at CB. He seems to be a very good cover guy, but his lack of bulk is disturbing.

Roddy White looks ripped. I am hoping for an off year for Steve Smith again so White has the chance to make the Pro Bowl.
