- Drew Carter might be the most impressive receiver Oakland has right now. Walker has been decent and Curry is always solid, but Carter has developed a good connection with JaMarcus Russell and might be a potential breakout guy this season.

- Kwame Harris still sucks.

- Michael Huff has been far more active playing the free safety spot, making plays like he never did when he played strong safety. He's been flashing that speed and breaking on the ball nicely.

- Thomas Howard and Kirk Morrison are playing the pass so well lately that the Raiders' Dime defense will feature two linebackers instead of the more typical one 'backer configuration.

- JaMarcus Russell has been inconsistent. Some days he puts on absolutely throwing clinics (we have a great practice quarterback here), and other days he makes simple mistakes.

- Nnamdi Asomugha and DeAngelo Hall are everything they should be so far. Both have been making a ton of plays on the ball.
I doubt we get anything done through the air though. No question the run-heavy scheme will be our bread and butter on offense once again if we want to accomplish anything. To be honest I didn't expect anything different from Kwame and even Huff in his new position where we all thought he should have played from day one. Lastly, I thought Russell would've been much farther along than he's shown to be thus far into camp. meh.

Eagles second year LDE Victor Abiamiri had surgery on his dislocated muscle and is out of TC this year. He could miss as much as the next four months, but that is worst case scenario, so we'll have to wait and see.

It's Russell's first camp and he's an incredibly raw prospect. Don't give up on him...it will be a couple years before he's proclaimed a real bust.

Can't wait to see Merriman and Phillips take turns against Kwame Harris though. That certainly won't help Russell's development.

Other than the usual guys who always look good, Shaun Rogers has been dominant this camp, still learning his role though in the 3-4. RB Jerome Harrison has been killer too. Brady Quinn not been looking very good, not very confident. I think he had a good day today but that hasn't been the norm.

Glenn Dorsey had rough first couple of days but blew up 2 plays for what would have been big losses of yardage.

Brandon Flowers is going up against Dwayne Bowe everyday and is looking pretty good

Let's see if I can summarize some of the standout players for Dallas:

- Tony Romo has been nearly perfect according to the beat writers in Oxnard, he has been showing some pin-point accuracy, and looks more comfortable in Garrett's offense this year.

- Tank Johnson finally makes his presence felt...He has been our most disruptive NT outside of Jay Ratliff, in the backfield, pushed Guroed to the ground another play, he was at OTA telling everyone he was a beast now and to watch out and he came out and backed it up...Our D line will surprise alot of people if this turns out to be true and we can have a base like of Ratliff - Tank - Canty.

- Adam Jones has been going up against TO nearly every practice since he has been here, and TO has been getting the best of him for the most part...He has been active, fiery, and doesn't look as rusty as expected, he should be up to speed by pre-season especially having to face TO in practice...Looks like he will be starting for us if re-instated, and with the Newman groin injury looks like an even better idea having him now.

- Sam Hurd has seperated himself from Miles Austin and looks to really be a find...He is bigger, faster, and has been a consistent playmaker in one on one's and team, beating Newman on quite a few plays...He will push Crayton to be that outside guy and let Crayton play out of the slot.

- On the rookies Bennett has struggled quite a bit, exciting play one minute then brain lapse the next, seems like he's thinking too much...Felix looks comfortable, I think he is going to flourish in his role of playing the slot, coming out of the backfield, and probably KR, showing nice hands, smooth running style and great acceleration...Jenkins is getting reps with the 1st team with Newman out which is good, he has struggled with off man coverage a little but played very well in press coverage bump and run.

Morning notes: Toomer returns
http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/gia...r-returns.html

Found this part really funny.

Quote:
I’m telling you, Kenny Phillips is going to hurt someone. I watched QB David Carr throw a nice pass down field in the direction of WR Mario Manningham. The receiver seemed open and I thought he was going to catch it and then - boom! - out of nowhere Phillips came charging in. He nearly made the interception and nearly took Manningham’s head off, all at the same time. He’s got to be in the receivers’ heads by now. I know he’s in my head. Every time I feel something moving behind me I quickly look to find out where the rookie safety is.

I would love an update on how Limas Sweed and/or Donnie Avery has looked in practice, if any Steelers or Rams fans happen to happen to know.

- Donovan McNabb is underthrowing some balls but for the most part is almost completely healthy again and looks the best he has in years.
- Brian Westbrook is still a beast obviously, his best play so far in TC was a 60 yard run the other day.
- Perhaps the biggest surprise of camp so far and someone who might make a big impact on the team this year and even get recognition around the league is Lorenzo Booker. He's catching everything and getting split out wide and burning people. Also had a 70+ yard run the other day.
- Jason Avant is tearing it up at WR running beautiful routes and catching everything and will be a great slot WR for us.
- Max Jean-Gilles is filling in for the emotionally disturbed Shawn Andrews and is performing like a starter, he's a mauler but could use some work at pass protection.
- Mike Patterson gained at least 20 pounds it looks like in the offseason by request of the coaches and looks like he's in probowl form.
- Stewart Bradley at MLB looks like our best LB and could surprise a lot of people around the league, Omar Gaither compared his style of play to Brian Urlacher.
- Sheldon Brown is the standout DB in camp and may beat out Lito Sheppard for the starting CB spot opposite Asante Samuel.
- The darkhouse to make the team is 4th year CB Therrian Fotntenot who looks like he will beat out 5th CB Nick Graham and might even compete for dime against Joselio Hanson.

Word from a friend at Bears camp says that Earl Bennett has been getting reps with the 1st team and outperforming everyone.

Not sure if that's a good thing or not.

Apparently the coaches have been very pleasantly surprised with recent addition Brandon Johnson. The LBer who we got from the Cards has already earned himself a spot in the nickel package.

"The Bills say they won't negotiate a new contract for LT Jason Peters until he concludes his holdout and reports." --Rotoworld

I dont see the Bills caving in any time soon. Here's a good article regarding the situation...

http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/co...ry/401589.html

Bills have upper hand with Peters

Bucky Gleason
Updated: 07/28/08 6:44 AM

The message sounded all too familiar, a filthy rich athlete whining about not making enough money. Jason Petersí protest over his contract with the Buffalo Bills didnít exactly startle an organization that spent years listening to Bruce Smithís annual blather about feelings of disrespect.

Bruceís general approach was complaining about his contract, reminding everyone he was the best defensive end in football, finding reasons to skip large portions of training camp and reporting back to the Bills for the start of the season. It was Bruce being Bruce, greedy and selfish, always taking care of No. 1 before donning No. 78.

Ralph Wilson has been around the block a few times, knows every pothole on the street. Heís owned the franchise for nearly 50 years. He transformed the Bills from a $30,000 risk into a $760 million empire. Heís had terrific teams and terrible ones. But he always, always, did business on his own terms.

Obviously, Peters doesnít know Ralph the way we do. Heís not a man with whom you want to play chicken, especially when heís driving a tractor-trailer and youíre in a Pinto. Peters isnít Bruce. He has neither the leverage nor the credentials to bully around the Bills.

If the intention is sending a message, Peters is going about it the wrong way. If heís looking for a fight, he picked one of the toughest kids in the neighborhood. Clearly, the Bills arenít backing down. If they buckled to him, players looking for new deals would be lining up along Jim Kelly Boulevard.

Chief Operating Officer Russ Brandon made that perfectly clear last week when he stood firm going into camp. It doesnít take a COO, a CEO, a CFO or a GOOF to see the Bills have the upper hand. If he plans to make another NFL dime, Peters best get his fanny to camp.

He should also redirect his anger. His contempt should be for his former agent, Vincent Taylor, who unlike management failed to see the potential in his client. The Bills should be given credit for locking up a prospect and molding him into a Pro Bowl left tackle.

Petersí current agent, power hitter Eugene Parker, isnít doing Peters any favors either by advising his client to stay home. Peters can sit and pout, but heís not helping himself or his team. Every day away from training camp is another day of silence, another opportunity for someone else and another $15,000 down the drain. Today, heíll move past $60,000 in fines for unexcused absences from training camp.

Heís not going to get much sympathy from people who would be thrilled to make $60,000 a year, let alone the $4 million he could collect this season if he hits his bonuses. The fact heís willing to throw that much money away should be an insult to every person who socks money away just to watch him play.

Remember, too, that the Bills were the team that signed him out of college as an undrafted free agent and gave him an opportunity. Peters did his part, but where would he be without them? Perhaps he would be playing on another NFL team. Itís also quite possible he would be nowhere.

Nobody is asking for loyalty. Management is well-aware that Petersí deal is well-below market value. My guess is the Bills would be willing to restructure his contract, give him a new deal commensurate with his ability.

Aaron Schobelís contract was restructured when it had three years remaining. Terrence McGee signed a new deal. Brad Butler and Kyle Williams had previous contracts ripped up and replaced with better ones. None made a stink before reaching agreements.

Peters wants a new deal? Fine. Talks can begin when he shows up for camp. Until he arrives, the Bills can keep collecting from him.

Oh, that's a good thing. Bennett is the Bowe of this year. Hell of a player.

Bennett is one guy I always liked going into the draft. He is in a good situation in Chicago to start as a rookie and eventually become a solid receiver. I can't imagine he'd have to be Marques Colston or Anquan Boldin to start over Muhammad or Brandon Lloyd.

You mean the guy in Carolina who's been performing better than expected?

Jake Delhomme continues to look brilliant and ready to start. He's in the best physical shape of his career and not once has held his arm gingerly or had to shake out any soreness. He's still got a pitch count, but no lingering pain.

Johnathen Stewart another day another bucketload of praise from everyone about how amazing he looks. On the first day he surprised people with his breakaway speed and not he's doing it in the passing game.

DeAngelo Williams Doing everything he can to be assertive, though he is still being a good tutor to Stewart. He's improved head and shoulders over his camp last year and his hitting the hole with authority and showing excellent vision.

Steve Smith ready to play today.

Muhummad He's definitley lost a step but he was never fast anyway. His veteran legs still have some leap and tricks in them because he's yet to drop a pass or have on picked on him.

Hackett starting to find his place, got himself lost in the defense twice yesterday for two touchdowns. His smooth routes and uncanny speed are going to be a huge asset for the panthers.

Fight there was a brawl between Otah and Brayton today, thankfully brayton kept his knee out of it, but its good to see players fighting for their spots.

Injuries Ian Scott DT formerly of Philly, broke down on wednesday, suspected torn ACL the same knee from last year. Currenlt Ma'ake KEmoeatu and Demoine Lewis (starters) are resting with injuries at shoulder and leg respectively and Darwin Walker has a mild concussion. That leaves 3 tackles remaining 1 rookie 1 udfa and some journeyman nobody.

DJ Hackett is being treated with kid gloves until they're sure his ankle is ready to go

Stewart though feeling good about his toe is getting plenty of rest as well

new offense stuff More two tight end sets using the smaller faster tight ends the Panthers have on the roster. Dante Rosario former oregon player looks to be winning the starting spot.

LOL of the day

WHAT WE LEARNED: You donít jump off-sides at practice. Not anymore. Offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson instituted a new rule Wednesday designed to cut down on the number of false start penalties this year. Tackle Frank Omiyale was the first to screw up and was sent on the Lap of Shame, immediately yanked from team drills and forced to run a lap around the football field.

Bad Stuff No player other than Peppers has been able to effectively generate pressure in the passing game, though Brayton has played the run extremely well. If the team is to be succesful someone has to step up.

LaBrandon Toefield has next to no chance of making the team at the rate he's going.

The offensive unit is doing extra work on RB pass protection drills considering the youth at the position. I don't like the fact that our backs need more work picking up bandits, it can't hurt though.

Regarding Quinn, he hasn't been throwing to Edwards and Winslow like Derek Anderson. He's been throwing to 2nd team scrubs instead, something to keep in mind. Edwards and Winslow have been dominant btw, and the young secondary hasn't looked bad.
