Grimes has been going nuts lately, he was a potential CUT candidate, not anymore.

Roddy White is such a hoss. 85 receptions and 11 touchdowns on the year.

Rooting for the Texans and Steelers! I think that's important for us.

Atlanta was trying so hard to get that last pass on 3rd and long to Tony Gonzalez. He's gonna finish the season at 999 receptions in his career, that sucks. haha

A little old Jason Snelling with 600 rushing yards. I've liked him since we drafted him, and now he's getting some exposure. Pretty cool.

It's done. It took the start of the 5th decade and 44th year in existence, but we finally got back to back winning seasons for the first time in franchise history! 9-7 is a pretty good record considering some key injuries and a brutal schedule. I can't wait til the beginning of the '11 season when all players are back and the schedule is easier (NFC West instead of NFC East lawl).

Looks like we are going to be picking 16 or 17. Could have picked as high as 13 with a loss I believe.

well chiefs are not happy either with us winning since they our 2nd. We could have easily picked top 10 if we didn't win the last 3 meaningless game. That's just BS, I think of you guys predicted this situation.

Mike Smith did what he had to do, the man is trying to keep his job. I'm not mad at that part, but why not just play some guys who don't get as many reps? Why not just do some plays that you would normally just do in practice?

Well, I just looked up a draft chart. Looks like we will be picking 19. Without the victory we would have been picking 13th. Call me crazy, but I would have taken the L.

Winning culture >>>>> 6 draft pick spots. Nobody here would have predicted that we would have our franchise's 1st back-to-back winning seasons when Mike Smith and TD took over. There will still be great players available at 19, and I like that Smith has our players out here fighting even though we are out of playoff contention.

Draft King is right; we can finally put an end to this culture of losing. Now, with a few additions, an easier schedule, we should be in the hunt going into next year. If you could have told me that Mike Smith would have taken over and had two winning seasons to start things off I would have laughed at you considering how bad things were in 2007.

qft. we got that freaking monkey off our back and today's win was a disgusting one but i'll take the division win over 6 draft pick spots. so much happens in the offseason where players' stock rise and fall and the uncertainty of each player's capability makes the draft a real crapshoot, as much as we draft-lovers would hate to admit. and shame on you guys for rooting against the falcons, and more disgustingly, for the friggin bucs. shame. shame. shame.

with that said, i know we played the terrible bucs offense today but i really wouldn't mind going into next season with grimes and owens as our starting CBs. and john abraham played beastly today as well against a formidable donald penn. at #19, i would love haden to fall to us but if not, i would like sean weatherspoon or derrick morgan.

WTF is wrong with some of you guys?? Yall would rather have a loosing season and get a good draft pick and watch this team continue to loose rather than having B2B winning seasons for the first time ever w/ way too many injuries?

Thats appalling to me guys...As a fan I always want my team to win idc what the situation.

I dont give a **** if we pick 5 or 6 spots later, we can actually call ourselves winners

i agree entirely, totally dont understand and am quite taken back by folks not wanting to end the season on a roll, in good spirits and ready to go next year....

i mean its not even like have one massive need and are set everywhere else like say, for eg the Jets of 2008 where i could understand people wanting a higher pick for a qb

but yeah weather its pick #13-20 we still dont know what we want...i have no idea LB, C, OT, CB, DE

personally, i want to trade out of the first anyway....ill shed some more light on my current thoughts on the draft later in the week, but it boils down to me starting to really believe in this "process" and thinking we can build this team to championship calibre with chemistry, coaching and depth...not sure there is a need for a BIG splash at all this year at this stage...there are no Turners of Haynesworths this year that fit to a T....i cant even see a spot where we NEED to spend a top 10 pick on... call me crazy but just my opinion.

Im becoming less and less keen to stunt the growth of our improving "average starter" players with "slightly above average starters" who are already at their peak. IMO we just need to plant seeds with our draft with potential beneath our "30 somethings" to develop

It was such a boring game that idc who won.

first 10 games:

Chris Houston: 1 ints
Brent Grimes: 2 ints

last 6 games:

Chris Owens: 2 ints
Brent Grimes: 4 ints

that's twice as many in almost twice less games from our starting 2 CBs. I know int's don't show the full story, but it does mean that our CB's were making plays on the ball more.

Brent Grimes improved as the season went along and Owens was hands down better than Chris Houston. If nothing else, we should be better off as Owens improves naturally in his 2nd year.

last 6 games:

Chris Owens: 2 ints

that's twice as many in almost twice less games from our starting 2 CBs. I know int's don't show the full story, but it does mean that our CB's were making plays on the ball more.
Add to that they covered som very poor recievers whilst the decent ones were being thrown at by very young QBs. In addition im still not backing owens or grimes on Colston, Bryant and the like, however there was progress...really solid progress...picks, playing the ball (houston take notes) Grimes athletism continues to astound me....he looks like Finegan but plays like DRC, both Owens and Grimes curtail their bodies in the air unlike any corners iv ever seen, Grimes just launches himself.... look where he becomes airborne today, how long he is in the air, and where he lands its crazy...and did you seem them belting guys today?...i dont care if your Adrian Peterson or Michael Turner...Chris Owens and Brent Grimes are gonna try to put a lick on you. (ps Chris Owens with a textbook rugby tackle today....*wipes tear*) ....

In addition to this my Leigh Bodden pleading (and alot of other peoples Carlos Rodgers pleading) will not help us a heck of a whole lot against the same freaks Grimes and Owens will already struggle with...iv seen Rodgers and Bodden play...good experienced vets, however they dont have any type of X factor at all like your DRC's and are not all worlds like your Woodsons and yours Revis' (or is it "Reev-eyes" when using plural?)... instead, think of younger versons of Brian Williams...which is fine. If our corners and gonna revert to old form come 2010 then hell...Id sign both young Brian Williams' cause we will improve our D as a whole...but if they continue to progress im not so sure anymore what we should do...does a slight upgrade for 10 games outweigh the growth of 1 of Grimes and Owens and Jackson (who is also playing well) and the 30+ mil it'd likely cost?

Finally, if Aso or Revis or Woodson...someone ALL WORLD was off contract this year id be keener to pay far more for a guy who i know will deal with the big time WR and always be better than our current guys....than these slight improvements we would get from the vets (based on our CBs recent play)

Notice the similarities between these 2 QBs in their first and second season starting:

PLAYER A
1st: 265/434 (61.1%) for 3440 yards (7.9 YPA) and 16 TDs to 11 INTs (87.7)
2nd: 263/451 (58.3%) for 2916 yards (6.5 YPA) and 22 TDs to 14 INTs (80.9)

PLAYER B
1st: 284/460 (61.7%) for 3388 yards (7.4 YPA) and 22 TDs to 9 INTs (92.0)
2nd: 277/460 (60.2%) for 3152 yards (6.9 YPA) and 21 TDs to 15 INTs (82.4)

3rd: 312/478 (65.3%) for 4009 yards (8.4 YPA) and 34 TDs to 11 INTs (105.5)

People are always talking about how Matt Ryan (player A) is going to be the next Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, but the similarities between Philip Rivers (player B) are pretty evident. Both were experienced college QBs whose strengths include short to medium passing accuracy and are clutch. Both went through some rough patches early in their career, but Rivers seemed to have responded very strongly; I think Matt Ryan is capable of that too.

One of my friends gave me a William Moore rookie card, and it just got me wondering how our rookies are gonna do. Consecutive strong draft classes can make a dynasty and I really want to see how TD fared in his 2nd go around. Peria Jerry looks like a force to be reckoned with if he continues to work hard. William Moore is a complete enigma; I wonder if he will be the player he was before his senior year injury or has he lost it (being out for the season doesn't necessarily help his case). I am really excited about Thomas DeCoud's development. He looks like he can hold down the FS spot solidly for several years.

Getting consecutive winning seasons is a hundred times more important that picking six spots higher. Momentum is very important in the offseason. It's also a pretty decent achievement given our brutal schedule and key injuries. Still, even getting a wildcard this year would have required an 11-5 record, which would have been seriously tough given our schedule even without any injuries.

19/20th is a decent position. It's far enough away from the silly money, and a nice spot to trade down from if someone wants to jump up for a quarterback, for example. It's also a good position from which to pluck one of several DEs that should be a value fit around there.

I think next year is looking bright. We clearly need reinforcements at CB and DE, but we have some promising youngsters at both positions. I've been really impressed with Owens, and Grimes looks much better at RCB. We do need someone to deal with the larger receivers, however. I still think Carlos Rogers would be ideal, if the price tag isn't silly.

It will also be important to see how Jerry and Moore come along next year. I don't think Moore's injury is too serious, but Jerry may not be 100% until late in the season.

By the way, how good was our run D in those last few games? I think it had a lot to do with facing young QBs (so we could load 8 in the box all the time), but still, good job. I think Thomas Johnson has done well this year (as Trey disappeared), Anderson is clearly better at DT, and Vance did ok in limited action, so our DT rotation next year will be interesting; a pretty good player will probably miss out. I actually would expect Jerry to start the year on PUP and not really be a factor until the second half of the season. (btw, bit of a shame not to need a DT from this excellent, deep draft class!)

Not quite up to expectations, but still a good season all-in-all, I think. Progress.

Oh, and have a look at this page if you're not convinced that winning this game was important to the morale of the players:
