Alex Brown fills in nicely during 1st and 2nd down, and 3rd and short. Anderson is suppossed to be our pass rush specialist on 3rd down and he can't even sniff the QB 90% of the time.
Like awfullyquiet said, we should groom someone behind Ogunleye within in the next couple of years, and then we need to find a replacement for Anderson, or teach him some moves besides the speed rush. To actually consider DE with any of our first 3 picks would be pretty stupid IMO, unless the value called for it.

Week 5: Bears vs Lions
I hope we stay focused for this game and not look ahead cause the Lions had our number last year. If we play smart we should dominate. Orton should have a good game and this could be his break out game.

I never said Mark Anderson was the answer, but neither is Alex Brown. It shouldn't be an and/or proposition.

It's not a bad thing that Alex Brown can stop the run. and do it well. And yes, he's a 5-7 sack guy. This year he's on track for 8 sacks... So. I don't see your 8-10 sack crap... sure you want a 14 sack guy every year, but that's not going to happen between our o-line.
In our scheme, it you also doesn'en busted hard. None of the flash or panache that we saw his rookie season. He hasn't really done anything that i can remember over the past 2 years.
But, in addition, it's NECESSARY for us to stop the run. I don't mind if we take two roster spots to do it in the form of brown + 1... it's more cost effective (but roster prohibitive)... find a top quality DE to groom (again)... and work him in behind ogunleye... when we don't have any ability to stop the run, our linebackers work overtime to stop it. I think you're so focused on the little parts of the 'scheme' that you neglect that alex brown is a fine football player. there is much more pertinent needs than DE.
there is something to why there's no pressure, but i can't for the life of me figure it out yet. i'm going to go look over the past few weeks to see if i can find anything.
|
I find it funny that you blather for 5 paragraphs to essentially agree with me.
Yes Alex Brown has his role. Yes we need to draft someone to groom behind O-Gun. O-Gun is the prototype for the minimum type of production we need from our starting defensive ends. I've never said Alex Brown sucks, I said that we need more production from the defensive end position and simply fall back on the same three guys we've been putting out there doesn't cut it. Alex is a bit player. He's not someone I want playing more than 50% of the time.
And O-Gun has been pretty lousy so far to boot. I'm hoping he turns it around as he had a tremendous year last year.

He's an Iowa fan, cut him a break. It's a miracle he can spell correctly. ;)
Definitely a trap game. We don't play well in Detroit, their offense while inconsistent can put up points, and our passing game is spotty at best. I'll take the Bears but in a close one.

If Tillman is out their recievers could give us problems. I guess even if Tillman plays we could get hurt for big plays since our pass rush seems to dissappear whenever we drop back everybody into zone. Could be a shootout.

I've never admitted this before, but my girlfriend is....
a Lions fan.
*Gulp*
We have cleaning duties on the line, so the Bears better friggin win.
I think the bye week will really help the Lions though. We took a physical beating against the Eagles.

I think the Lions can keep it close, but I can also see it getting ugly.

It won't get ugly, I'll guarantee that. We always have trouble at Ford Field, even when we won the Super Bowl I think it was a tight game if I remember right. <--- Went to the Super Bowl. *Sigh* I still remember that atrocity. :(
The Detroit Lions are a trap team. They may have had a bad start but their offense has talent, they are coming off a bye week, and like I said we have a history of bad play up there.
Detroit just worries me in general because of their explosiveness on offense on paper.

Oh no...I was making fun of the Lions well before I met her.
I'm just happy she likes sports though, even if she's from Michigan.

The Lions are coming off of the best thing to happen to them since Barry Sanders broke 2,000 yards. This could be a trap game, but the Lions defense is so horrible. I think the Bears should win easily, but you never know.

The Lions are averaging 6.2 YPC and 9.2 YPA on defense. That is absolutely insane.

I may essentially agree with you, but not with this. Teams will try running against the bears, especially this year and next year. Kevin Payne is showing up. Mike brown is STILL on the field. Tillman and Vasher are both legit... and briggs and urlacher are in the top 10 of coverage for LB's... Yes, griese threw 400 yards. but he also threw the ball 65 times. 6.5 yd's per attempt (ish), which isn't all that great... but, with brown it forces teams to pass on us more, which plays more into our strength (coverage).
But... It's not like griese passed all over the bears, it's that gruden took the only thing he knew how to get, and that was completions. if anything it was just bad tackling by the corners and safeties (which you can credit mike brown to partially not taking his body out on them). Yes. the DE's never got pressure, but it's not like it really mattered at that time. Gruden out coached the bears.

Keys tomorrow;
- Pass rush. Kitna folds like a lawn chair under pressure, and without Tommie Harris in there it will be tougher to get pressure on him but we have to get after this guy because as bad as he can be, if given time he has two very talented WR's to throw to.
- Ball control. Run the damn ball and don't stop. They can't stop the run and we actually have two guys who can pound the rock. ****, the first series I wouldn't mind seeing us running the ball up the gut 3 times. I want at least 30 carries between Jones and Forte. Ball control also means no turnovers. Another performance from last week in that category I will break my tv. Take care of the damn ball.
