haha. Yeah, I only killed a few of them in there. And the others left standing, just left me alone. The one guy in there, told me they'd leave me alone, if I didnt go snooping around their camps, a truce. I haven't even run into any of the Legion dudes yet. I ran into a a tiny sub-faction in the highway patrol building, but not much besides that.
I'm off to do about 5 side quests and continue the main quest in the same general area...on the road to Nipton/Novac.
I really wish some of my stats were higher. haha. I want to know what is up with that hacked robot and the missing gun in the Vickie and Vance casino. And there is also a would be companion (eye bot) in the mail building in Primm. But my repair skills are too low, of course. Hopefully I remember to backtrack there.

I need only five more science points to find out what's up with the Robot. Next level up, I'm going to do it. I could have hacked him and made him Sheriff. Honestly think that would have been badass, but the Enclave kind of left me with a bit of a sour taste for Robots with authority.

I'm thinking of getting New Vegas. Do I have to play Fallout 3 at all to understand what's going on? I've never played any Fallout for that matter, is that ok?

No, I don't think you need to have played any Fallout. It would help just from the knowing what the expect perspective, but it's not necessary. One thing to keep in mind about the games, not knowing your gaming background, is that the game is still very much an RPG. It might look like a FPS, but it still very much behaves like an RPG under the hood in terms of combat and style. If you enjoy big games with open worlds and different ways to approach things and can forgive the fact you can shoot someone in the head and have them not die, this is an incredible experience.

Yeah, I decided against making him the sheriff also. I like the option at least.
As for science skill...I cant for the life of me find one of those +10 books for science. The ones that only last a short while.
They're okay I guess...just stockpile them and pass huge speech checks when your actual skill is like 30. haha. I see they still have some of the permanent books as well...Chinese Army: Special Ops manual and Lying Congressional Style and so on.

It's a stand alone game...I'm actually hoping for some connections between the two, ala a shared character or just some nostalgic dialogue but not much of that yet.
Fallout 3 is only like $20...maybe you should pick that up also, or maybe first, just to try it out. The game plays almost exactly the same.
Also, Fallout 3 was the same way, as in...it's not a continuation. The majority of people who own Fallout 3, didnt play the first two games. They were PC games released in the 90s.

I am basically hearing its a new map, with the exact same gameplay mechanics.

It's ummmmmmm....pretty damn close. Feels like an expansion or mod. With better dialogue and "improved" shooting mechanics. Still nothing fantastic there, but more effective.
If you liked the last one, you'll like this one. It's more Fallout. Plays nearly identical to 3, and is just as long. It's supposed to gain its own identity, to a point, later on. Once you reach the Vegas strip. But 5 hours in, I havent made it that far yet. I'm really enjoying the game, myself.

It's pretty much an expansion pack with 60 dollars worth of new content. The Fallout equivalent to a new yearly edition of Madden/NCAA. The entire Black Isle Studio influence shines through, which is a big deal for me.

hm.. i just got bored in fallout 3. i dunno, at some point, i felt really aimless. the last 'quest' i had was to go to some part of town where i got killed by bad guys i probably wasn't supposed to be fighting yet. then i ran out into the wilderness, killed some guys i wasn't supposed to kill (because i didn't know i shouldn't shoot them), got lost, ran out of bullets, then spent a lot of time trying not to get killed by really weak bad guys.
clearly, much of this was probably my fault, and i don't hold it against the game. but it also made it hard for me to maintain interest.

I really appreciate the fact that they finally changed up the voice actors. Gah that wore thin in Fallout 3. Every little kid or old coot had the same voice. Freaking annoying.
What does suck is the unvaried character models, though. They're unchanged...and pretty piss poor as always. I thought Ringo was Harkness from Fallout 3 at first glance.

They are pretty damned bad. It's time for a new engine and for the modeling/animation people to be fired and not work in video games anymore. Downright awful.

I'm more of an RPG guy than a FPS guy anyway. I'm pretty picky when it comes to games, I just can't get into 95% of games but this looks like a game I would love. For example Oblivion is one of my favorite games of all times and this kind of looks like an apocalyptic version of Oblivion, is that a fair assessment? I don't know if I'm just thinking that because they're both made by Bethesda though.

That's a fair and completely accurate assessment. Might not be fair to the original games in the series, but that's what they've become. That's not a bad thing at all though. It actually works really well, and I can honestly say I enjoyed these games and found them to be a much richer and deep experience than Oblivion.

Good to hear. The one thing I will say that kept me from getting Fallout 3 was I do tend to prefer the medieval settings like Oblivion over futuristic settings, but I also never thought I'd like a western game until Red Dead Redemption came out and I gave that a try and loved it. So now I'm a little more open to trying new things.

I've probably asked before, but have you played Dragon Age: Orgins yet? That's one of my favorites, and I'm turned off usually by the time period.
edit...
Oh and EE, have you found like a stash house or anything yet? I'm pretty damn overcumbered already. I could use a megaton apartment. ha.

I came really close to picking dragon age up a couple months ago but I remember seeing something about it that turned me off about it that changed my mind. I can't even remember exactly what it was though haha.

Apparently you can use Victor's house/gas station in goodsprings, I also have one in Novac, and I have another in the lucky 38 casino in Vegas.

Have any of you guys playing FONV experience any of the god awful bugs yet? And are the load times as frustrating as stated in the reviews?

Load times seem overblown so far. They seem a little faster than Fallout 3, even.
Only glitches I've run into are dialogue involved. Like their mouths dont move, while they are talking sometimes. Nothing big yet. I'm about 7 1/2 hours in now, level 7. Still havent reached the bright lights of the Strip. And no freezes or anything like that yet, either.

I'm getting excited too. Gonna order a bunch of games tonight so that when I'm finished university for the semester in early November I can nerd out for a few weeks.

That's where I found the Legion. Shot the leader in the head right after his speech and all hell broke loose haha.
