Default Steve Young getting number retired

http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article...rterback_Young

Quote:
The 49ers are scheduled to retire Young’s jersey number during a halftime ceremony Sunday, Oct. 5, when the 49ers play the New England Patriots at Candlestick Park.
Young, elected in 2005 to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, is the 11th player in 49ers history to have his number retired.
“It’s a tremendous honor, no question about it,” Young said Thursday.
Young said a friend called to tell him that this might be the best honor of his career. Young agreed because of the team element of football and the personal nature of such an accolade. Former owner Eddie DeBartolo is expected to attend the ceremony, along with many of Young’s former teammates.
He deserves it...my favorite player of all time. Its about time his number is retired, now its time to get rice's number retired.

Like what you said, he deserves it. Probably had one of the toughest jobs becoming the full time starting QB after your team has arguably the greatest QB of all time. Like you said, Rice deserves it as well, perhaps more then anyone cause I consider him the greatest football player of all time.

Didn't the NFL ban retiring numbers?

Why would they?

Although, for a franchise like the 49ers or the packers or the bears, I wonder if they'll ever get to a futurama like state where there's no numbers left lol.

Yes, I wondered this too. However, there is 99 numbers to distribute and only 53 players on a roster so I guess you get 46 free numbers to retire. Though thats not taking into consideration that there is only like 18 different numbers a QB is allowed to wear, so if you retired all 18 of those numbers then the NFL might have to make a rule change OR they would have to bring some numbers out of retirement. Though the likely hood of a franchise having 18 QB's that are worthy of retiring their numbers is rare for a long time (The 49er's have had 2 in the last 100 years or so).

Four that are worthy: Tittle, Brodie, Montana, Young.
