Franklin is a good coach, but I think I would prefer Del Rio if I were USC.

There's little doubt Franklin is a rising name in coaching circles, but they've just moved on from a younger coach. It's extremely tough to win in the SEC, let alone at Vanderbilt, but Franklin is still relatively inexperienced. I think USC could benefit from someone who has been around a little more more at this point rather than a guy who is still figuring things out. He's shown to be a hell of a recruiter so far though. That class he's putting together at Vanderbilt is kind of ridiculous when you remember that it's Vanderbilt.

From what we've heard, Del Rio wants that job more than anyone else. Even though it was basically forever ago, he has had some success as a as a head coach in the NFL. Some of those mid 2000's were pretty good in spite of having less than stellar quarterback play. His defenses as a coordinator have been pretty good as well. Just seems like a much better fit to me. Firmer connections to the school/area, more experience, and USC really seems to like NFL guys. It's not like Del Rio lacks for the enthusiasm either. His personality seems like it would be a good fit for the college ranks. I think the narrative will be spun that Franklin will be more energetic and will connect with younger kids more, but I'm not sure that's entirely true. Remains to be seen if he'll be able to recruit the same way Franklin has been able to....but it's not like it's difficult to get kids to come to USC anyway.

Del Rio has zero experience as a head coach in college.

5) Pat Fitzgerald
You can take Fitz off there too. He categorically rejected Notre Dame and Michigan, which would make a lot more sense for him than USC.

Del Rio is a former Trojan, and I think would be a good fit for the job...however hes never coached in college so we have no idea how he would handle recruiting (USC recruits for itself but you understand). I think if he were to be hired he would benefit GREATLY from keeping Coach O and Tee Martin.

I think so too, however I think it'd be easier to leave for somewhere that isn't in Northwestern's back yard.

I think it's pretty clear that Fitzgerald is well and truly emotionally invested in Northwestern. We've seen this go a different way before, but he looks like he's interested in seeing how far he can take that program. The recruiting classes have been getting better there recently too.

I do think Jack Del Rio is solid coach, I wouldn't be upset with the hire but at the same time I'm in no rush to just hand him the job. His time in Jacksonville wasn't the best, only 3 winning seasons in 9 years.

We'll see. Got to figure he'll be talked to at least. Better fit there than he would have been at Miami.

I don't know how much stock you put into what Brock Huard says but he tweeted this.

I know two things definitively:

2. Kevin Sumlin is more than enamored with Southern California

#TheRumorsBegin
I don't know where he is getting that from but I don't see why Sumlin would leave A&M.

Jake Matthews is gone, he's almost certainly losing Manziel, maybe Mike Evans as well. A&M is a good football school, but it doesn't at all compare to USC.

Also, James Franklin is overrated. He is certainly a good coach who's made Vanderbilt much better than it was before. But he's not that good enough of a coach to entrust with the keys to a premier program. For example, while Vanderbilt is more competitive, they're at the same position in the SEC hierarchy as when he took over the program (outside of maybe temporarily surpassing the Derek Dooley Volunteers). A good coach, but not a great one.

He was a douchy character while at Tennessee (telling Alshon Jeffery he'd pump gas if he played for SC, publicly claiming Urban Meyer had committed an infraction when he had done no such thing, all while hooking Tennessee up with recruiting violations), and while you see nothing wrong with just up and leaving, its the accepted practice that a coach should at least be respectful enough to tell his team he is leaving in person. It's the same reason Petrino, Graham and Tuberville are disliked.

I don't get why he'd leave A&M. When Carroll was at SC the job was a better job than A&M but I don't know if you can say that anymore. A&M's in the SEC, even if Manziel leaves he's got Kenny Hill who looks great from what we've seen and the number one QB in the country coming in, he's the guy who finally has made A&M more relevant and the more dominant power in the state than UT, their facilities are arguably better than SC's new football facility and are being renovated, they're expanding the already huge stadium to make it even bigger, the SC athletic department is not nearly as stable as A&M's right now (Haden has now fired all three major sports head coaches in less than nine months and might be on the hot seat himself), he'll have to continue to deal with scholarship reductions there and wont be able to recruit like he would at A&M, the Aggies just raised a record 740 million dollars in donations to the University.

SC would be a step down, he's built A&M into something amazing and it would be easier for him to win national championships at A&M in the near future than at SC. Nicer facilities, more money, more possibilities.

Here's a nice article from Forbes that discusses USC's fall from grace.

Is USC giving up on the pro style offense thing? If not, that eliminates a fair number of names mentioned so far.

I think they go after another NFL guy given the success Carroll had and what Mora has done at UCLA.

A&M is in no way a better job than SC, Sumlin hasn't built anything. Sumlin's so far had a single good season and top recruiting class. He's doing a damn good job, but you can't say any coach has "built" a program in only one year.

The simple fact is that everything he's doing at A&M, he can do at USC, and do it better and easier. A&M's a good football school, but the truth is that those top recruits he's bringing in are committing more so because of Sumlin than A&M itself. At USC, you're still going to have those exact same kids committing to play for Sumlin, but also those kids who want to play for USC in general. You say that he can recruit better at A&M than at USC. Do you realize that coming off a 6-7 season, USC received five 5-star commits (compared to 11-2 A&M's zero 5-stars)? Maybe you consider USC a damaged brand, but its clear recruits don't.

Not only that, USC is a national brand that is realistically able to bring in the top players regardless of their location, and we've yet to seen that same pull from A&M. This fact is currently somewhat mitigated because A&M reigns supreme in Texas for the short-term, but if the Longhorns make the right hire this offeseason, the Aggies are quickly going back to second place. Sumlin would perhaps need a season or two to build California recruiting contacts, but overall USC recruits for itself, more so than A&M.

As for it being easier to win at A&M, I don't really see that at all. Any A&M championship is going to have go through LSU, Alabama, Georgia, plus any of Florida or SC given the year. As for money and facilities, those things are overrated when you're talking about a program with the appeal and prestige of SC. A lot of recruits are going to prefer to play for the Trojans and live in LA, rather than play for the Aggies and live in College Station, even if the facilities aren't as nice.

Sumlin's got a good thing going at A&M, but he can have an even better thing going if he heads west. Don't let a short-term, reactionary view clout your judgement.

They haven't said anything about what they are looking for on offense. What does pro style even mean these days? Spread offenses are closer to pro style than an offense with a fullback and two tight ends.

I agree, but it still seems to me like they were one of the longest hold outs in making the switch. And there's still a delineation between a standard offense and what Kevin Sumlin runs.

At the end of the day, I'm sure USC will go with what gives them the best chance of winning eventually...whether it's with this hire or the next one.
