It's time for.......

Minnesota coach wish list!!!!

1) Troy Calhoun, Air Force Head Coach- This is a name that's already been floated, and I like it. Calhoun has experience as an offensive coordinator outside of the service academy, so I think he could run a more traditional offense. Even still, Georgia Tech has shown that offense can work at a higher level, and anything is better than the spread Brewster tried to implement.

There's been some question if Calhoun would want to leave, but at 750k a year, if Minnesota offered 2 mil and an opportunity in the Big Ten, I think it'd be pretty hard to turn down.

2) Kevin Sumlin, Houston Head Coach
Like Calhoun, this name has already come up quite a bit. Like Calhoun, he has a relatively small contract, a low buyout, and is probably looking to move into a BCS conference.

3) Bobby Hauk, UNLV Head Coach
This isn't a name I've heard much yet, but it should be. Considering the body of work that Hauk put together at Montana I thought he would get more interest than the UNLV job. If Minnesota offered there's no doubt he would jump.

4) Craig Bohl, North Dakota State Head Coach
If you can't beat 'em, steal 'em. This isn't a sexy pick, but it makes sense. Bohl managed to beat Brewster with a much inferior team, and they took down Kansas this year. He's quietly built a really good program using mostly Minnesota rejects. He deserves a chance at a better job.

5) Major Applewhite, Texas Assistant Head Coach
This would be a reach, but he was offered the offensive coordinator job this Summer and apparently made a big impression. I doubt they go this young, however.

6) Mike Leach, Ex-Texas Tech Head Coach
It's been put out there a lot, but I don't buy it. Minnesota is too family-friendly, plain and simple.

I do feel bad for Minnesota dude, I remember when Mason was fired they promised to go big in their search and hired Brewster. I remember him talking about how he was going to keep the big in-state recruits home, and while he did get some good recruits, he never really lived up to what he was preaching.

Was it that he was in over his head or something else? Minny may not be a traditional Big 10 power, but they were rarely bottom feeders under Mason

I believe he also said something about a NC in the next 5 years or something ridiculous. RECRUIT! FIGHT! LOSE?

Brewster was a risky hire that blew up in their face. That said, it's still a good stepping-stone job. Nobody was expecting the type of stuff Brewster was promising, they just want to be a solid program.

The big problem with Mason was that he simply didn't recruit. He was a good coach in the 1990's when you could start recruiting 3 months before signing day, but by the 2000's he was clearly getting outclassed. He lucked out with Laurence Maroney and Eric Decker, and Marion and Dom Barber went to Minnesota because their Dad did.

Also, a lot of people don't know this, but they actually offered Gary Patterson the job first and he turned them down. Then it was between Brewster and Lane Kiffen (gross).

Had Patterson accepted things could have been a lot different.

Yea, a big problem with Mason was that he seemingly was content with staying put. Nothing really ever changed, and despite having maybe a season or 2 of 7-8 wins (off the top of my head), he never really did anything to take a next step. And as bf51 said, was a turrible recruiter.

That said, there's no reason Minnesota, if they hire a solid, fundamentals coach, can't compete for winning seasons at the least every year. That's the problem with college football though; instead of hiring the guy that will establish a solid program and raise expectations from the bottom, everyone wants to find that diamond in the rough and immediately go from worst to first. For whatever reason, no one (ADs) understands why that doesn't work...

I knew Mason was a terrible recruiter. I remember that being the big argument against him, and the main reason Brewster was hired. But even then who did he bring in? I know he's gotten 2 or 3 AAA's, but the only one anybody is excited about is Grey.

It's Gray, and I don't think that's fair. Certainly there have been some recruiting dissapointments (paging Sam Maresh) but the team is unquestionably more talented than it was a few years ago. The problem, quite honestly, is that Brewster doesn't really know anything about football. He doesn't have a philosophy at all, he's just a pitchman.

Wait, are we talking about Ron Zook...

But really, they are basically the same person, except Zook has more experience.

At least Mason had some football knowledge. Brewster just wants to get skilled guys and throw them on the field. Zook finally realized in his 4th year that he needs coordinators that know what they're doing. Brewster should do the same if he gets another year.

Kevin Sumlin and Gary Patterson are reportedly the two biggest targets should/when Mike Sherman is fired at Texas A&M. You've gotta wonder if Patterson is too big for A&M at this point, and if he wouldn't be better off holding out for a bigger job.

The names I'm still hearing most for Minnesota are: Troy Calhoun, Al Golden, Mike Leach, Kevin Sumlin, and, sadly, Dan McCarney and Marc Trestman.

Applewhite is the hottest property in college FB today. Former OC at Rice & Bama (in Saban's 1st yr) helping to lift all those programs' offenses from mediocrity & now back at his alma mater, many in the Great State think he's > Mack Brown, who's a silver-tongued politician type who's great at recruiting & ESPN interviews, lousy game mgmt. strategist.

Applewhite could get a HC job at a major marquee name program in the next 3-5 yrs. before fellow Horns asst. Will Muschamp, who has already turned down Tennessee's HC offer.

I dont think that Muschamp is going to make it to being head coach at texas. I believe hes going to get an offer too good to refuse before that happens. I fully expect Georgia to fire Richt at the end of the year so that they can throw the bank at Muschamp.

Aside from that, I do believe Patterson is a little bigger than the A&M job, i see him leaving for a lot bigger job than that or not at all. I know hes very happy with where he is at there at TCU, but if he were to leave id see it more at a place like Michigan maybe if Rich Rod continues to tank.

How much longer do you guys think we will see Paterno at PSU? is it time for them to start looking around? Thats going to be a job that many people are going to want....

It'd be sweet if Michigan threw, like, $47 million at Muschamp and made him coach. That way, Michigan would have a, wait, what's the word I'm looking for? I haven't seen one of these things in ages. De.....fense?

Muschamp would never go to Michigan and Michigan would never go after Muschamp. Muschamp is going no where since Mack Brown is obviously retiring in 1-3 years...

I don't know if they'd hire Sumlin because, well, TAMU thinks they can get any one to coach them and they would never slum like that. More importantly, Sumlin isn't good-ole-boy, which is kind of a requirement. I would be shocked if they even interview a black candidate.

Gary Patterson seems rather happy about where he is, but I would certainly not oppose his hiring. Personally, I think Sherman gets underrated for the talent he's been hauling in with Texas, LSU, and OU as competition for recruits.

When did anyone say anything about Michigan and Muschamp?

Nevermind just saw Snipers post....

...but Muschamp to Georgia is more realistic to me.

They did that last January, throwing big $ at Kirby Smart, the Alabama DC, who had the #1-ranked scoring defense. He turned them down to stay at Bama, where he got a big raise, but for a lesser total annual salary.

Both Smart & Muschamp are UGA alumni, I think they will have better luck with Muschamp.

In any case I agree with you, Richt is toast.

Smart was born in Alabama so he has a much better connection to Alabama than Muschamp has to Texas, but everyone is different so who knows? From all reports I have heard Muschamp's family loves Austin so that may play some roll.

Anyone know if DeLoss, UT AD, ever got his contract extension? From what I can find it appears they were going to give him one, but nothing has happened as of yet. His contract runs out in August, which would clear the way for Mack and Muschamp to move up.

Add Mike Bellotti to this list, which would be interesting.

Thank god almighty you can take Trestman off. The U President was asked about him and said they wanted someone with success at the college level.

Not to mention the fact that Texas is a much better job. You could argue that being the Texas head coach is arguably the best job in the nation.
