Soon that expression will be changed to, "People worship him like Matt Ryan." God is totally on his last leg by now . . .

Sorry but what FA is gonna want to sign with Detroit? Honestly!
Not drafting a franchise QB would be the worst your franchise could possibly do.

What makes you think, no matter who we bring in, that we won't be in a position next year to draft who we want to draft?

yeah, especially if we sign a good LT wouldn't that lead us to drafting a QB.

Why would you ignore the obvious glaring need right now? QB is the one position that would improve you team for certain. Look at ATL. You have a few good backs. Draft a QB with the first overall and then Id trade back up into the first again and take a T.

Money talks. But I understand your point of a QB, we also still have a 2nd round QB biding his time.

Well regardless of who we draft we will end up having to ignore a glaring need. It really depends on what young QBs come out. I don't want to pick up the best of a really bad bunch that we did in 2002 that's right The Pianoman was in fact the best QB that season. Except I guess David Garrard if we look completely in hind sight.

Intersting articles. Rumors starting on the GM. No Pioli hmmmm but that could change.
Ron Wolf would be awesome.
LIONS LOOKING AT OLD-SCHOOL G.M.
Posted by Mike Florio on November 29, 2008, 1:16 p.m.
The Detroit Lions are compiling a list of candidates for the position of General Manager. Per a league source, the Lions currently are looking at a quintet of old-school candidates.
The list, we're told, includes former Packers G.M. Ron Wolf, former Giants G.M. Ernie Accorsi, former Texans and Redskins G.M. Charley Casserly, former Bills G.M. Tom Donahoe, and Chiefs V.P. of player personnel Bill Kuharich, who previously served as G.M. of the Saints.
Wolf and Accorsi currently are retired, and Casserly has spent the past two years working as an on-air analyst for CBS. Donahoe hasn't been heard from since being fired by the Bills earlier this decade.
The job currently is held by Martin Mayhew, who was promoted into the role after CEO Matt Millen was fired in September. It's unknown whether he'll be retained by the new regime.
In a recent item at SportingNews.com, we pondered the fact that Patriots V.P. of player personnel Scott Pioli doesn't have a team of his own to run, and we pointed out that the turnaround of the Dolphins under his father-in-law Bill Parcells, the resurrection of the Falcons under Pioli's protege Thomas Dimitroff, and Pioli's role in the discovery of two of the best low-round quarterbacks in recent years if not ever (Tom Brady and Matt Cassel) should make him a candidate for any G.M. job that comes open this year.
Apparently, the Lions don't feel the same way. Which isn't all that surprising, since they're the Lions.

Pioli has alwyas taken his name out of all GM openings that have called him. I think he woulod be a great person to run our team, but I believe him when he says that he's very happy in Boston. He basically functions as a GM with the Pats so unless we double/triple his salary I don't see him coming to Detroit. Too bad, he's got talent.
I also like Ron Wolf, he seems like a no nonsense guy who is great at evaluating talent. But he's retired, so we'll see.
The thing about the list that names old guys, I don't think the Lions can really look at current staff members until after the regular season because of Anti-tampering rules. I think it would be best for our team if we can name our guy very soon and then start assembling the list of potential coaches and start evaluating the roster and draft and so on.

I like Accorsi as a possibility. He built most of the Giants Super Bowl winning team before he was let go/retired.

He wrote an excellent book. If he gets hired I suggest everyone go read it. I'm on the Casserly bandwagon though.

Face it, Wolf and Accorsi aren't coming out of retirement to be our GM. That's just another pipe dream. Of the rest, I don't want any of them, they all have had a lot more failure than success when it comes to building a team.

Word, IMO, just 3 guys who at have a ceiling of mediocrity. The only success any of them had was when they had great HC helping them.

I think we should be able to get a decent GM. The position open is team president, so that should attract someone decent.

Money talks, names of positions don't mean squat compared to salary and hopefully Ford is willing to throw some cash at a canidate.

I think we should all personally write letters to Scott Pioli after the season is over. Plead with him to take the job.

see the kiffen duo are heading to tennessee. we could have probably had them both. (well, had an awesome college team like tennessee not been in the running) offense and defense genius and an easy transition.

I like the Ron Wolf rumor if it includes his son who has been doing it for twenty-years with his father. I also like Reese, Pioli and Accorsi. Hell, I even like Vainisi.

Yeah, if I was a rising brilliant GM looking for a job, I'd get a real warm feeling knowing WCF would be my boss. Face it, none of the real talented young potential GM's are going to want to come to Detroit to work for Ford, the laughing stock around the league. Next to Oakland we are the last place where everybody would be crazy to accept the job.

I think there are some things that could sway a young rising GM.
1) Job security. Say what you want about WCF but he's loyal to his GM. Too loyal. This young GM could have years to screw up before he got the axe. Plus Millen got a ton of money and an extension for crying out loud after 3 terrible seasons. Millen was one of the highest paid GMs, I think the highest before AJ Smith and one othe GM got a new deal. So with WCF you get a boat load of cash and have to try to lose your job with 8 years of diarrhea football.
2) Cap room, despite what you say we have some
3) A challenge. And this an understatement. Detroit is like mission impossible right now but many GMs have bigger egos than the players. AJ Smith for example. A good GM can build any team because a good GM will bring in his players. Its not like he's stuck playing with the current roster for 3 years. Most of these rejects are on 1-2 year contracts and can be cut this year. This team can be turned over. It will take a lot of turnover, but the key will be who the new GM gets to replace them. If we hit on some draft picks, we can start the rebuilding process back to respectability.
Pretty much any GM/human being is better than Millen at running a football team. Heck the Mayhew trade of Roy was better than anything Millen ever did. Not that I want Mayhew(unless it can be proven that he disagreed with every bad Millen move he made under his tenure). I'll settle for an average GM at this point. What Millen did can't even be called a GM. He's an FR(Franchise Ruiner)

Does anybody think the NFL will step in this off-season and guide the Lions in this decision making process? I think that is realistically what should happen. Ford is doing a terrible job, despite Detroit being an excellent football market. I think the NFL recognizes this and should aid in hiring someone, even if its to hire someone else for the GM job.
