To answer the question on Tait, we would actually save cap money by cutting him, assuming that his bonus we distributed equally.

Tait's base salary for next year is 4.8 million, his remaining signing bonus is 2.7, meaning that we would save that 4.8 million as we are going to pay the remaining balance on the signing bonus this year regardless. If the team wanted to resign St.Clair for next season to replace Tait they probably could, although it would likely require a 3-4 year commitment I'm not sure they are willing to make.

I'd say it's 60/40 that Tait stays and they draft a replacement this year. Probably about 40/60 that St. Clair stays.

The team would owe Vasher 2.9 million next year. So the only question is if the team still views Vasher as having starting potential down the road. If they do, you keep him as you've already given him over 12 million in the last two years. If you don't, you likely cut him, as Danieal Manning seems to have the nickle position on lock.

I still don't think it's a given we cut him.
I dont think we should cut him. I wouldnt cut someone with his experience just to save money unless we plan on actually using that money for another player.

I believe we'd save about 1.4 million on the cap if we cut Marty Booker. Considering he didn't do **** this year, I'd say it's a wash either way.

We could cut Tait and tag St Clair but that wouldnt make much sense. I think St Clair should be offered a decent contract. He has played well at times. Id give him 3-4 yrs $10mil.

I think St. Clair will get more than that on the market. He was a capable starting LT for a team that nearly made the playoffs, and could probably be a very good G or RT if for a team needing one of those.

I'd personally rather keep him and cut Tait, but odds are Tait stays and we let St. Clair walk.

If we let St. Clair walk, cut Tait, and drafted a mid round backup swing tackle, we could afford a Vernon Carey or Jordan Gross for RT. We could even get Stinchcomb and save money while still upgrading.

Of course, but I would rather overpay for a premium position, not a right tackle.

The cap is expected to be 123 million next year, up 7 million from last year.

Quote:
The offseason has arrived for all four NFC North, and usually the first question fans have is where their teams stand in terms of the salary cap.

Thanks the magic of ESPN, I can bring those figures to your computer screen. The numbers below are current but don't reflect the credits and adjustments that occur just prior to the beginning of free agency.

In order:

Detroit: $26.8 million
Minnesota: $20.4 million
Green Bay: $19.09 million
Chicago: $17.4 million

What do these numbers mean? Nothing more than the fact that none of the Black and Blues will be particularly constrained this offseason by cap considerations. They'll each be able to make the moves they want to make.

We'll have much more on the player movement season as the playoffs continue. But I wanted to get these numbers to you right away.

So, that means we'd likely me looking at approximately 24 million in cap room once the cap limit is set and such.

Hmm....so that number is for the 2008 cap? I assume it must be, or my numbers are off a bit. If it is, they are about dead on.

Updated with some new information. I forgot that certain players (Griese, Moose, Benson) were cut using the new rule that split their salary charge. That's another 5-6 million.

I've estimated that we've got about 15-16 million to work with. Figure that 5 million of that is for rookies and another 3-4 should be for emergencies and we should be fine. It wouldn't be a bad idea to do an extension or two, but I'm not sure where they'd go. Most of the guys up next year are either backups (Danieal Manning, Israel Idonije, Mark Anderson) or need to prove themselves more (Kyle Orton, Josh Bullocks)

Good stuff.

And man, are we weak at WR....I knew it was bad, but looking through that, it's like Hester, Bennett and a bunch of practice squad special teamers...yikes.

You know, Kevin Jones, AP and McKie all making more than Forte makes me kinda sad.

Goes to show the excellent value of rookie contracts outside of the top 5-10 overall though.

It makes sense. Forte could have been a complete bust. AP might not be a superstar, but he's earned his keep over the years.

But I agree, draft picks are gold.

So I've been pretty busy in Spain the last few months, so I haven't updated this. I probably will once the roster is set.

That said, who does everyone think will make the 53 man roster. Jerry says that 3-5 spots are still up for grabs. Here's what I think.

Quarterback
1. Jay Cutler
2. Caleb Hanie

Runningback/Fullback
3. Matt Forte
4. Kevin Jones
5. Garrett Wolfe
6. Adrian Peterson
7. Jason McKie

Wide Receivers
8. Devin Hester
9. Earl Bennett
10. Brandon Rideau
11. Juaquin Iglesias
12. Johnny Knox
13. Rashied Davis

Offensive Line
14. Orlando Pace
15. Olin Kruetz
16. Frank Omiyale
17. Chris Williams
18. Roberto Garza
19. Josh Beekman
20. Kevin Schaffer
21. Dan Buenning

Tight End
22. Greg Olsen
23. Desmond Clark
24. Kellen Davis

Defensive Line
25. Alex Brown
26. Tommie Harris
27. Marcus Harrison
28. Adewale Ogunleye
29. Anthony Adams
30. Israel Idonije
31. Jarron Gilbert
32. Mark Anderson
33. Matt Toeina

Linebackers
34. Brian Urlacher
35. Lance Briggs
36. Pisa Tinoisamoa
37. Jamar Williams
38. Hunter Hillenmeyer
39. Nick Roach
40. Marcus Freeman

Secondary
41. Charles Tillman
42. Nathan Vasher
43. Danieal Manning
44. Kevin Payne
45. Corey Graham
46. Al Afalava
47. Craig Steltz
48. Josh Bullocks
49. DJ Moore
50. Roderick Hood

Special Teams
51. Robbie Gould
52. Brad Maynard
53. Patrick Mannelly

Placed on IR
-Henry Melton

Last 5 to make the team
-Rashied Davis
-Adrian Peterson
-Marcus Freeman
-Matt Toeaina
-Roderick Hood

Last 3 to get cut
-Michael Gaines
-Trumaine McBride
-Devin Aromashodu

I think Aromashodu might make it. Jay Cutler seems to like him a lot
