Belichick could also handle play calling duties himself. Otherwise, there are probably some intriguing candidates to look at, which I'll go over in a bit.
McDaniels is the head coach of the Broncos.

Damn Denver made a nice hire. This automatically makes McDaniels the best HC in the west.

The Denver Post reports that Dom Capers will be the Broncos' defensive coordinator under new head coach Josh McDaniels.

Capers, who has extensive head-coaching experience, worked on the Patriots' staff with McDaniels this past season. This report conflicts with ESPN, which has claimed that Eagles secondary coach Sean McDermott is McDaniels' target.

Is Denver going to a 3-4? Denver doesn't have have any personnel for a 3-4, but they need to pretty much rebuild their entire defense anyway. DJ Williams could probably play ILB, but all those undersized dlineman wouldn't really have a place.

According to ESPN, McDaniels wants Sean McDermott as the DC, not Capers.

ESPN is always late/wrong about this stuff. It's Capers.

well it was Mortensen, he also did break the McDaniels story.

Hopefully it's not Capers, as our roster is not very 3-4 compatible right now, but it would probably take a few years to fix the defense anyways. Either way, the D can't be any worse then it was this year.

I think this was who the Broncos wanted all along and the fact that NE didn't make the playoffs allowed them to see what their chances were before they made the tough decision to fire Shanny. Once they fired him I thought it was because they were aiming for either McDaniels or Garrett.

Great fit.

Young offensive mind with this to work with:

QB Cutler
OTs Clady and Harris
WRs Marshall and Royal
RBs It's Denver

And I've always been a fan of Capers since his Carolina days (They went 7-9 as an expansion team with him and a rookie QB). With a few additions on defense, I think he can do a good enough job with that group to have them take back the division and contend for a Super Bowl as early as next season.

I think it's a good move by McDaniels if it is Capers. While McDermott is a great young defensive mind, I don't think it would be wise to have the two top coaches on the team both in their early 30's, one being a rookie HC and other a rookie DC. Someone like Capers has a ton of experience and would be a great fit for McDaniels. McDaniels will likely focus mainly on the offensive aspect of the game, and he could give Capers pretty much control of the defense.

However, lets say McDaniels did bring in McDermott and they decided to do almost a split thing where McDaniels has full control over the offense and McDermott has full control over the defense (kind of like Reid and Johnson now). If they both panned out, you'd be talking about possibly one of the best coach duos in the NFL for the next 20 years, as long as they pay McDermott similar to McDaniels, and McDermott is like Jim Johnson and just wants to be a DC.

Well they need some kind of running game to help balance that offense out. They've had some 1,000 rushers in seasons past, but the last true difference maker they had at that position was Clinton Portis. To be fair they had a lot of bad luck this season with injuries. Hopefully that isn't a huge issue in 2009 and they can settle on a starter.

Mike Nolan was reported to be the Packers DC by numerous sources as well so I'm not believing anything until a news conference. :D

I think that is wise considering how crazy things are right now - the media guys are all trying so hard to get the scoop. Too bad there appears to be no penalty for misinformation...

I don't think the whole offensive over defensive thing is that big of a deal, look at the colts, and the buccs for example. The defensive coordinator he brings in and whomever his personnel guys are will have a far greater impact.

For those saying that the Patriots might promote the Mangurian Candidate (current tight ends coach): God, I hope not. Belichick has done a good job of promoting in-house, and Mangurian is pretty good with the running backs and offensive line, but this guy isn't even a good tight ends coach (he didn't do much with Watson and Thomas, both early-round picks) and as offensive coordinator of the Falcons in 2003, he did an atrocious job (29th in total offense.)

Maybe Mike Nolan your new DC!

Hello BIG NICKEL!

When we dropped him as our headcoach and let Manusky do what he wanted, our defense improved light years!

Good luck with that one.

Well it seems like they somehow turned down Romanowski's offer, shockingly. I just hope that the power point that he made gets somehow leaked out to the public.

And I don't think its a bad hire. Plus, if things go well he could be there a LONG time...
