Peppers
Do we even try to go after him? An Odom/Peppers DE set would be nothing short of spectacular. Would he even consider here? We have a very young defense and on the verge of being great. I say we should throw the check book at him. He could put us over the top.
In short I would give pretty much anything for him to sign here.

If we go after Peppers, we could forget about taking Orakpo and focus on OT or MLB in the first round. I'm all for it, but I don't see it happening knowing our owner's cheap tendencies.

Yeah, I don't see it happening but then again they all but had Shaun Rogers last year. Would be a great addition to our D and it would allow Odom to be more of a specialist which I think is where he'd be most effective. We'd have a great rotation with Peppers, Geathers, and Odom.
I can dream.

I think all Cincy fans should stand outside paul brown and boycott until we make a serious offer

I don't think we can afford him. He got paid around 14 million last year apparently, and you know he'll want more.
We're already dropping money into Geathers and Odom as DEs, and the rest of our D isn't cheap either. Leon Hall, Jonathon Joseph and Keith Rivers were all recent 1st round draft picks that are getting paid very well. Meanwhile we've given good deals to guys like Peko, Dexter Jackson (not sure when his contract is up), Dhani Jones etc.
If you add all that up, plus whatever this year's draft pick (if it's a defense pick) and peppers and we're probably going to crack top 10 most expensive defense. Except we're not getting the results the other 9 defenses are getting.

Come on do you really think that anyone in Cincy is going to go after him? Peppers wouldn't want to come there anyway... if he is smart he goes to someplace that Rex Ryan or Dom Capers is going or he heads to the NYG to be the replacement for Strahan and be the anchor of that Defense for the next 6 years...

And if we got pass rush, we probably would have gotten similar results. Peppers = automatic pass rush

While I think Peppers would make us a top 10 defense... Next to zero chance it happens.

Your sig says that you've been a Bengals fan since 91. So c'mon, surely you should know better than think that. ;)

How much cap room do you guys have?
I think Peppers would consider Cincy because your D is improving and the offense, if ever healthy, has the potential to make the team into a contender right away.

I've not seen an official number yet, but the Bengals should have plenty of cap room. They've lost a lot of big time salaries in recent years and replaced them with guys making a whole lot less.
With that said, the Bengals have never gone after a big time free agent.
Thinking back on it, their biggest FA's ever have been Antwan Odom, Sam Adams, and Michael Westbrook.
Yeah...bad.

Yea we don't really have a track record of going after big time players aside from Rogers. I think Peppers would consider coming here as he would be able to make an instant impact and help the Defense continue to improve. As bad as we were this year, we actually have something to be optimistic about.
That said, I'd rather see them go after a Center or OT in free agency. Not that I wouldn't love Peppers but those two spots are more pressing needs IMO.

Peppers won't be coming to Cincinnati. His salary would demand to much and the garunteed money would be through the roof. Not only that, Peppers has already gone on record that he wants to play in a 3-4, NOT a 4-3. Ok, yeah sure, we throw in a 3-4 look every great once and a while, but it's not our base and won't be in the forseeable future.
And remind me once again why he would want to play here to start and how much would the Bengals have to OVER pay to get him here when he's already going to get a truckload of cash ??

Why would he want to play here? Hm...
we have a young up and coming defense that he would help bring to the next level.
our offense is really not far off from being a good unit. Yeah, this past season was horrendous but there is reason for optimism.
as crazy as it may sound, this team really does have the potential to make some noise this season. I like to think Bill Cowher may know what hes talking about just a little bit.
Now with that said, he's most likely going to go to the team that gives him the most money unless he is franchised. If he is franchised, it would take TWO first round picks and that simply will not happen. We may be able to afford him monetarily speaking but we will not give up those picks nor should we. I don't think he will come here but it isn't like he'd be walking into a terrible situation if he were to join this team.

Thats what ive kinda been tryin to get at. He could and would be the face of the defense. He would easily become one of the most loved players in the city by general fans. He can gain a lot by coming here.

I'm not arguing what he would bring to this team. I'm arguing the fact that he will command big dollars going to a team on the cusp (which we are not) and would require us to overpay for his services to come here. I still don't see it happening...

The next time Mike Brown pursues a big time Free Agent will be the first time. If he even brings Peppers in for an interview, he'll have him fly coach and then pay his own cab fare to the stadium. Nothing like Mikey's hospitality.
